This is something I've been trying to work out for some time. With mouser's new new captions features it's starting to make it easier.

cmpm found & posted a solution here: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=34092.msg320268#msg320268

I'm not able to download and test the latest beta right now but thought I'd mention something I noticed with the "web cam" test yesterday.
When I did a capture with it it used the information I currently had in the quick field. "Test %num%" (no quotes.)
But instead of picking up with the number sequence from the previous screen captures, it started at 001. Causing a duplication of what was already there.
You may have already noticed and fixed. I'll try and load the latest and test later today to see.
Maybe provide an option to save "web cam" captures to a different directory? A thought.

53
You're right. This is a nice addition.

Suggestion to re-word it to "Web Cam" or similar related. Didn't notice it at 1st since it said to switch to Video Capture. I 1st thought that was related to your EastScreenCast ie video capture.
Just wondering, why it's under the view tab and not the capture tab?

54
Right ok, so i think i see part of the problem.  It looks like when you set some text for the caption in the Automatic Captions tab, AND you have SC configure to auto add captions to every capture, it will NOT add your custom typed text to the caption.

By default the text in the Automatic Captions tab includes "%filememo%" which will already include whatever you type in the post capture dialog, so you see it.  But if you change the text there, you will not.

I think i can fix this.

That is what I was doing wrong.
Now I have:
Options >Automatic Captions >Image Caption set to %datetime% \n%filememo%
And when I add something in the pop-up prompt it comes out like this:

With this and the new captions features that should cover the bases.
I looked through the configuration but didn't see any options that looked like number 1 above. Where did I miss it?

56
mouser,

Installed 3.25.01 and all the caption functions are working. I did select clear all the old settings on install. That could have did it. Or could have been operator error in setting (or over setting) options before.
Anyway, thanks again for the hard work and great program.

Mouser
Up until 3.24.01 all I was downloading to try were portable versions.
Could you provide a link to an install version of 3.23.01?
I'll uninstall 3.24.01 and try it and see if 3.23.01 works. If you think that will help.
And without making any options changes go through step by step and see what happens.
Then uninstall 3.23.01 and re-install 3.24.01 and do the same thing.

Would there be anything different between my portable & install versions that could cause this? One difference from my side is with the install version my captures are being saved to a data files folder I have set-up on a different partition. In my portable tests I've been leaving the captures in the same folder as the portable SC is running from.

This is how it was. I had added text.
SC Test -  010.png

I went ahead and deleted "%datetime% - 3.24.01 Installed Beta" from the configuration window and then took a shot of the toolbar option.

Here's what I got.
SC Test -  012.png

Before selecting save and show I typed in "added caption"
This is how it shows in the main window. Time stamps are the same, "Added caption" not there.

It is checkmarked.

SC Test -  009.png

It worked fine in 3.23.01. But 3.24.01 is the one that seems to have the problem.
I'm running it on two different laptops. Both Win7. Just tried Ver 3.23.01 again on the one that is running Home Premium (if it makes a difference). It is working fine.
I have Ver 3.24.01 running on a Win7 Pro. It is the one not bringing up the pop-up prompt caption.

Previously on the tests I had been running a portable version in an HD partition I use for portable programs. To see if this might be causing the problem I deleted it and did an install of version 3.24.01. No change.

Here's the other screen relating to captions for the settings I have just in case.
SC Test -  006.png

I added something to the default comment line just to see what would show up.

60
Additional info to my last post.

What I type in the pop-up prompt is being shown in the comment box in the main SC screen. Just isn't showing as a caption with the capture.

61
I'm hoping I'm wrong but it seems I'm seeing problems with captions again.
Testing the latest update today.
What I have placed in the 'Add Caption to Picture' in configuration is displayed. But it is not picking up what is being added from the pop-up prompt.

I've tried just pressing enter after adding something in the short comment line. Also tried by pressing the save and show button.
Same applies using the [...] button.

I'm seeing the info from 'Add Caption to Picture' and that is all in each of the cases.

What additional info can I provide?

62
Doing a search with Agent Ransack works for finding captions.
In the results will be the Screenshot with caption.

Thank you for this. I've read about Agent Ransack before but hadn't tried it. Just did and it found every caption search test I threw at it. And with the export to clipboard or file I can generate about any type of listing I want. Very nice.

63
Both work fine. Thanks.
Look forward to the release ver.

Ctrl+A both selects AND copies at the same time
is this true? it shouldn't be.  Ctrl+A should just select all.

It did for me on my 1st test. Just tried again and it didn't???
Let me try a couple of things and I'll report back.

It's not happening with Ctrl+A now. Only with the to clipboard button which is fine. When I Ctrl+A I do get a "ding" sound like a copy is being made but that's it.
I even exited and restarted SC to see if that made a difference.
I must have pressed the to clipboard button before when the text went to the clipboard and thought I hit Ctrl+A. Sorry for the false alarm.

I did notice that when typing in the small comment box (not using the [...] pop-up) that if you type something that is longer than the box the text runs under the [...] button and you do not see it. As you type more it will start to scroll again but the last couple of characters remain hidden.

Regarding my post on SC going behind the Firefox window, it isn't happening repeatably. Sometimes the main screen holds and sometimes it goes back behind.
Any suggestions to try?

I need to head out on errands so if you post back it will be an hour or so before I'm back.

Question...
If I press 'Keep image and show', whether I add a comment or not, the main screen does pop up, but then goes back behind another window. Firefox in this case.
Is this something in SC or my machine? Seems to me focus used to stay on the main SC window instead?

67
bob, try the new version i just uploaded.
the expanded text edit memo now should support some keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+A to select all text, as well as Alt+letters to perform some quick actions via buttons, and ctrl+Enter and Escape to accept or reject edits quickly.

That is PERFECT! I really like that Ctrl+A both selects AND copies at the same time. And the "To clipboard" button sends the text without selecting anything first.
Haven't been able to locate the Alt+ options yet but will. I'm sure they will be of help.

Thanks for adding this before the release.

68
Thank You for adding this feature to be able to add the secondary caption in the pop-up prompt. It makes commenting the captures much easier now.

You can thank DC member Cranioscopical for that -- it was his good idea.

Ctrl+A in in caption box shouldn't be hard to add.

And a BIG Thank You Cranioscopical also. :greenclp: :greenclp:

69
New version uploaded that should fix the double-line caption stuff -- thank you guys for helping me track this one down!

Working like a charm now.  :)
If I haven't before, Thank You   for adding this feature to be able to add the secondary caption in the pop-up prompt. It makes commenting the captures much easier now.

I know you are in the squish bugs mode now for the final release so could I add a request for the future?
When adding a caption with the [...] button in the prompt would it be possible to also be able to add the Ctrl-A function for typed text like you have in the comment section of the main window?
This would allow sending this caption to the clipboard, save & hide the pop-up and move on for another capture without opening the main window 1st. Save a few steps when trying to manually capture and comment screens quickly.

Based on lack of response to some other posts I've made on documenting screen shots I must be one of the few or only one trying to do this. Or there are other ways of doing it I haven't figured out yet.
None of the other capture programs I've tested have this feature either or even come close to what you are doing now.

Thanks again for your hard work and I'm sure at times a significant amount of hair pulling to make SSC as good as it is!

Helps me remember the reason I may have taken the capture.

I didn't think of that. Maybe even have the captions searchable.

That's something I try to do now on occasion. Only thing is it takes some time and a couple of extra programs to get what I'm looking for.
Maybe down the road.

Glad the double spacing could finally be reproduced.

71
that may not be correct, now mine is doing what yours is, when using both caption options
backspacing the blank lines fixes it

You beat me to it on my response.  :)
I checked and my blend was already at normal.
Backspacing or clicking on the blank line and "Del" works too.

My reasoning at least behind having the ability to use both caption features is I can have a "boilerplate" added to each capture as well as a note specific to the capture. Helps me remember the reason I may have taken the capture.

72
Tested v3.23 for the bug I noticed.
It's fixed for adding multiple line captions in pop-up prompt window. I tested it in the single line box using \n and using the [...] pop-up window.

Checking further though, I found something that breaks it again.
When you enable "Add caption to image" under Post-Capture Options in main configuration and also add a caption via the pop-up prompt.
The information from both caption entries is there in the main screen but only after you manually re-size the caption box by dragging up (to enlarge the caption box) & moving the box down. The caption added via the pop-up prompt is double spaced again, the caption from the post-capture options is normal single spaced.

I tested this 6-7 different times with the post-capture add caption option on & off and it is repeatable on my system.

73
bob,

i'm having trouble reproducing that problem and i really would like to identify it and fix it.
can you experiment some more and see what you can figure out about what might trigger the problem and the conditions that cause it and any clues you might be able to find? maybe try using the caption button within the program to see if that has the same effect?

I tried 3 quick re-tests before posting.
1.) Did a capture, at the prompt selected save image and show. Used objects > add caption to image and typed "line 1 \nline 2 \nline 3" (without the quotes). Clicked ok and everything displays fine.

2.) Did a capture, at the prompt typed "line 1 \nline 2 \nline 3" (without the quotes) in the small add caption line. Then save image and show.
The main SSC window comes up and the caption displays the same as the screen in my previous post. Except the verbiage.

3) Did a capture, at the prompt pressed the [...] caption button. Typed:
Line 1
Line 2
Line 3 (did not press enter/a carriage return after the 3)

Pressed ok then save image and show. The main SSC window comes up and the caption displays the same as the screen in my previous post. Except the verbiage.

Adding a caption via the main SSC window seems to work fine. It is adding the caption via the pop-up prompt window that the problem shows up. For me at least.

Again, I'm running a portable version at the moment to do me tests. I can load the exe and give that a try if you think it may make a difference. It will be this evening though before I can do it. And can take some screen shots or possibly a video. Can your video capture record SSC ok?
Not being a smart a$$. Just don't know. Never had a need to use a video capture program till now.

74
Ok I think it's nearly time to release this to public -- last chance to save me some embarrassment by finding some showstopper bugs.

Not sure if this is a bug or been covered before.
Running 3.21.01 in portable mode, Win 7.

I captured a screen, use the prompt me pop-up, and the [...] caption button to add a 3 line caption. I then clicked save and show. Here's what is displayed. Used snipping tool because I forgot if or how I could take a shot of SSC with SSC. Only 2 lines are shown and it looks like there is an extra line between each.

Could a hotkey (or button to the toolbar) be added to copy the caption of a saved image to the clipboard?

If you add a caption via the post-capture popup, it will also be in the comment/note section at the bottom of the main window, below file name.  If you click in there and do Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C you will copy it all to the clipboard.  Is that sufficient?

This is the way I have been doing it. And can continue to. Thought it would be a logical addition since there is already the Ctrl-C to copy the image and the copy path to clipboard icon next to the quick name field. Just cuts down on repetitive steps/keystrokes when you're taking a number of screenshots or transferring images and notes to a different app.

I've been trying out a couple of macro recording programs for some shortcuts between other programs. I can give them a shot to see what they can do.
