VERY interesting....  Does something similar exist for Vi/Vim bindings?

I'm also happy to assist in any way that's needed.  I can turn my hand to a lot of things (but, on the debit side, I'm old and grouchy)...  ;)

Find And Run Robot / Question about FARR's resource utilization
« on: November 21, 2009, 08:55 PM »
I just noticed something a little odd about FARR's resource utilization, or at least it seems odd to me.  (I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, btw...)  I installed the latest version of FARR earlier today and, since then, it's used a total of 2:42 minutes of CPU time, is using 17,516k of memory, 10,793,136 I/O Read Bytes, 35,833 I/O Write Bytes, and 1,086,660,762 I/O Other Bytes.  And, no, that 1 billion+ number isn't a typo...  Any idea why that number is so high?  FWIW, my system has been mostly inactive since I installed the latest version, meaning I've been gone most of the day and not using my computer...  The only other process that's used more I/O Bytes Other is MsMpEng (MS Security Essentials), at 1,156,970,506, and counting...

I don't know that this behavior is different from previous versions of FARR - I can't say that I've ever looked at I/O Bytes Other usage...

(Sorry, mouser, but I had it on my calendar that I should try to be a pain in the butt to somebody today, and it turned out to be you...)

Have you had a chance to look at this one any more?

Mouser, now that you're flush with the success of a fantastic new release (Thanks! - btw...), have you given any more thought to this one?  (Gratitude doesn't last long, does it?) ;)

I'm using FARR alt tab 2.0 every day (all day, pretty much) and I think it's a huge improvement over the standard Alt-Tab...

Awesome - very exciting times!  (You don't know how hard it's been on my scanty store of patience to not keep bugging you about the FARR updates...)  :D

DcUpdater / Dcuppdater.exe crashes multiple times daily in W7...

I was looking at my Reliability Monitor today, just out of curiosity, and noticed that it says that DcUppdater.exe crashes multiple times every day.  This is typical of the problem report:

I'm running v1.23.01, according to the app itself.  Any ideas as to why this might be happening?  Most days, it happens twice at around 2:30 AM, and twice at around 2:30 PM.  It also leaves an icon in my system tray each time it happens, which disappears, of course, as soon as I mouse over it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Directory searching
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:51 AM »
Thanks, mouser.  One other thing:  I was trying to get the exclude subdirectories feature to work and couldn't seem to make it do anything.  I was particularly interested in preventing the search from recursing .svn subdirectories, but nothing I put in seemed to work.  (e.g. all .svn directories have an "entries" file.  I tried the following strings in the "Exclude subdirectories whose full path..." field, without success: "svn", ".svn", "\.svn\", and ".svn\", in an attempt to prevent the "entries" file from showing in the results list.  However, this does work:  "\.svn".

This is an issue I was about to ask about a while back because I thought it didn't work, but then found a way.  Now, I'm wondering if it's related in any way, and thought it might be useful to you (as info) or to others (in case they can't get it to work).

It does not.  It does find it if I type my\important, of course...

Find And Run Robot / Directory searching
« on: September 15, 2009, 10:01 PM »
Maybe I'm having a serious "senior moment", but I thought I had used this type of search before (and thought it was really cool!):

Given a directory D:\My\Important\Docs, type "My Docs\\" in FARR, and (after the search finishes, obviously) have the D:\My\Important\Docs directory show up in the results list.

But now it doesn't seem to work that way - I get no hits at all, and I've verified that the directory is being searched.  Should this type of search work or not?

Find And Run Robot / Re: date and time in statusbar

that would be really easy for me to add.. why dont i go ahead and add an option to show date+time in status bar on display.

Now you're making me feel guilty about sending in more money. :D

Find And Run Robot / Re: date and time in statusbar
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:08 PM »
i kind of like this idea.. perhaps a good solution would be to let plugins control the statusbar and titlebar text.

Did anything ever come of this?  The one thing I miss about SlickRun was that I could make it show the time and date when it got focus, so no need to waste any screen real estate to show it all the time...  I'd actually prefer to see it in the Title Bar, myself...

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR alt tab 2.0 beta
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:44 AM »
yep, i understand now -- basically the idea is to not require user to type in a special alias to search for open windows/running apps, but have it search for them as if it was a normal search directory with a score.  wouldn't be too hard to do.. i'll give it some thought.

Precisely, mouser - thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR alt tab 2.0 beta
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:14 AM »
can you elaborate a little more what you want to have added?

Sure!  Seeing the world (of my computer) from my vantage point, I now view FARR as the starting point, or jumping off point, as the case may be, for pretty much everything.  Right now, with FARR's Search Folders, Heuristic Scoring, Aliases/Groups, and the Scoring options for all of those items, I can almost instantly bring up anything on my computer by typing Alt-Space (or Pause/Break, obviously, which also requires holding down the Function key on my machine), with one sole exception:  Open Windows/Running Apps.

What I envision is (whether through a Plugin or natively, I don't care) the ability to add Open Windows/Running Apps to the results list.  Perhaps, in fact, it could be another List option in the Program Options dialog.  That way, depending on how it's scored, if I type Alt-Space followed by a string that's found in the title of an open window (and/or, perhaps, the name of an open app), it would show up in the results list somewhere.

Does that clarify?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR alt tab 2.0 beta
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:14 AM »
I'm really enjoying the instant switchover to an open window.  There is one thing that I'd like to mention, by way of ease of use, and this involves integration of Plugins more so than the FaRRAltTab plugin per se', I guess.  I have a hotkey of Alt-Space for FARR and Ctrl-Space for FaRRAltTab.  Sometimes, I hit one when I meant the other, and I don't think it's because I can't remember which is which:  The thing is, in my mind, at least, I associate FARR as being the one go-to place to change modes/do something different.  I don't really care if it's run a new program or switch to one that's already open.  The reason I switched to FARR from a combination of AHK scripts, SlickRun, Launchy, Switcher, etc. is that I really think it can be the "one ring that binds them all" - and, with plugins, it definitely can be.

But somehow I see this function as something that would ideally fit within the heuristics scoring of FARR.  It already searches aliases, the file system, plugins, etc. - why not running apps/open windows?  If you don't like it, turn it off or set the score really low; if you love it, set the score high.  I'm only speaking idealistically here, of course, not from a program complexity standpoint...

Is it possible for a plugin to add to FARR's internal search path?

Just fyi - I've been using the beta for the past few days, with no problems whatsoever.  Do you want future discussion in this thread, or the original one?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR Google Calculator Plugin
« on: September 08, 2009, 11:33 AM »
It took me a minute, but I did manage to spot the difference... ;)  I made that one change and it works perfectly.  It's a lot slower than JSCalc, obviously, so I'll continue to use it for everything it'll do, but Google Calc has some interesting capabilities...  Thanks!

I've never been able to get gcal to work - no matter what I type, I get "Nothing found.", but I don't have any idea how it's supposed to work, either.  When I installed the czb pack, I got some html help files, but with the exception of JSCalc, all the help topics just say something about typing in text for the "New Tiddler".  Does anybody else have it working, or know how it's supposed to work?

Find And Run Robot / Launching Office docs not working...
« on: September 01, 2009, 10:58 AM »
Is there any known reason why launching a Office doc (Word or Excel, Office 2007, W7) wouldn't work?  If I type "Documents<tab>" to browse "My Documents", then "Planning<tab>" to browse the "Planning" directory, and  then "<doc name><Alt-#>" to launch the correct doc, the correct app runs if it's not already open, but if the app is already running (with another file open, obviously) nothing happens.  If I right click on the entry and select "Explore Here", I can of course open it fine from Explorer...

Is this just another one of those places where MS stabbed us all in the back by creating another way to do something that was already easy to do?

49
Hmmmmm - I guess that's what I usually end up doing, too, now that I think about it...  :)

50
I don't have any strong feelings about it - it was just an idea - but, as I said, the main reason I liked it is that I think it's (a little) faster and easier to use Shift-letter than Alt-#.
