I have a Brother HL-5250DN mono laser which is rock solid.  And I love the duplex capability which I think is a must for anyone to get.

For color, I picked up a Canon IP4500 a few months back for US$90 on Amazon (probably cheaper now).  Works great.  And Canon support is terrific (I have a Canon digital camera also).  They have an 800 number and the people you speak to are usually very knowledgeable.

Living Room / Re: Advice: Never use your ISP provided email address
« on: August 15, 2008, 04:46 AM »

That's the beauty of the method I use. Nobody sees the name+xyz@gmail account. In fact, they don't see Gmail at all. They see xyz@mydomain.com which is forwarded to [email protected] behind the scenes.

And with my host's control panel, it's not hard to mass edit all my forward-only e-mail accounts to change the forwarding address if my Gmail account finally is overrun with spam.

But let's put it this way: I've been using this method with my current Gmail account, which I've had for over two years now, and the only spam I ever get is an occasional newsletter from Xara, who just won't remove me from their mailing list.

But what do you do if you DID want to reply to the sender (it wasn't spam)?  Then they would know your address.

That is why I use www.spamex.com which for $10/year gives me 500 disposable addresses.  The emails are all forwarded to a real email address somewhere.  And if I reply to someone, they massage the header, so the addresses I reply from doesn't show up.  I can also send attachments up to 500k.  I have a bookmarklet on my links bar for when I want to bring up spamex and create a new address or access the interface.  Since the domain name contains the word spam, I have had some occasional problems with some ISP's refusing to forward mail to it.  Which is why spamex also allows the use of the xemaps.com name (spamex backwards) :)  I use spamex for all forum registrations, newsletters, etc.

I also have my own domain name where I have 2 addresses that goes to Outlook.  Only very trustworthy friends/people/companies get these addresses.  I hosted this through www.addaction.com because I can use my own domain name directly in outlook (send/receive) or I can use their email servers (which is what I use since they allow me to use an encrypted connection, port 995).

I have other email accounts also, such as 2 gmail accounts (Gmail has been very reliable but since Google scans all email looking for keywords to generate advertising for you, one wonders just how secure gmail really is), a Yahoo account (never use, always full of spam), an inbox.com account (hardly use but can send 50mb attachments), mail.com (hardly use) and an account at safe-mail.net (this is where spamex feeds to.  This account is always HTTPS but the free version only provides 3mb of storage.  However, I've gotten maybe 3 spam emails here in maybe 4 years of use).  Probably a few others lying around also...

PlainOldFavorites has the same exact design as in IE.  I don't know about keyboard shortcuts as I have never used such functionality.  Sorry.

Thanks lanux128 for pointing me to that other thread.  Looking at the AVG commands in the RUN registry key I found that AVG had put ending quotes in the wrong place for one of the components that start at bootup time.  This was the apparent cause of the problem.

Still, I am disappointed that AVG failed to respond to my email messages where they should have been able to easily point me to the problem (as I am sure I am not the first person to experience this with their software).  I understand that with the free version of AVG, there is no support.  But if you don't get nay support with the paid (Pro) version either, then why pay for it in the first place?

General Software Discussion / Unwanted explorer window at bootup
« on: July 12, 2008, 05:08 AM »
I am using AVG Pro AV (v8).  Whenever I reboot, a new Explorer window opens up pointing to the AVG root folder.  I have checked all the usual auto startup registry and other start locations but see nothing that would kick off an Explorer window.

I sent a couple of emails to AVG but have not gotten any return replies (so I would not recommend that anyone upgrade to the AVG Pro).

Any ideas?

One of the bigger companies that sell code certificates is Comodo (the same people who offer the free Comodo firewall).  Looks like code signing certs are $167/year.  Go here:

I use Startup Delayer.  However the author isn't responsive with new releases very frequently.  I sent a list of suggestions to him and he said he would consider them for the next release.  That was back in January.  His last refresh was Dec 2007.

However, the reason I use SD is that it has proven to be a a good solution for a problem that some people seem to experience with WinXP - which is after booting, there are tray icons missing for apps that are actually running.  Previously, the only way I could find to fix this issue was to do a logoff/on again after a fresh system restart (which was a pain and more time consuming).  Now with SD, I don't have that problem anymore.   BTW: I have 32 apps showing in my tray right now.  I am also running WinXP SP3.

I disagree.  I have over 5000 Favorites.  I use the FF extension PlainOldFavorites to give me the same structure in IE as in FF.  And every year or so I run through them using amdeadlink and check that they are still in existence and available.

I also use the Scraplink FF extension to save copies of pages with information I am interested in, just in case the page disappears.

Google/Yahoo, etc. are useful for quick, common searches.  However, too often, the first few pages of most search engine results are gamed and littered with garbage links from CNET, Nexttag, Dealtime, Pricegrabber, etc.  Try searching for reviews on just about anything electronic, for instance.

What if you have a selection of favorite sites that you are experienced and happy with?  Say favorite photography blogs?  Specific articles on certain health subjects?  Best File Sharing sites?  Best airline ticket sites. Best virus scanning sites?  etc.  How about sites using Flash content (until recently? Google didn't search such sites)?  There are many reasons to maintain and use favorites/bookmarks.

I use the last free version of X1 to search the favorites fast and quickly when I need to find something that I think I have saved.

Well, I THINK that I used some words/phrases joined together (if I remember correctly, there were 5 or 6 variations that I used back then).  Like red25 & blue56 & something.  I may have connected at least one of them with a dash or underscore.  So I need to try all permutations.  I've tried doing this job manually, writing down each one I try but it just got to be too difficult (and I didn't hit the right combination).

I have an old E4M encrypted file that I forgot the password to.  E4M is no longer distributed but can still be gotten here:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/e4m/

Does anyone know of some sort of safe script program that would help me try to crack my old password through brute force?

I'm thinking that the script would let me put in possible words that I might have used for a password into a file.  Then it would combine them in all the different permutations and automatically place each attempt into the password field, click the enter button and keep trying until it worked?  This doesn't sound hard to do (to me :) ) but I don't know where to search for it.  I am wary of a lot of sites that advertise cracking programs and don't want to back into something that isn't safe and secure.

I looked at a program called Cain & Abel but it didn't look like it would help me do what I want.

Further problems!

When I rebooted the machine, after a while, I noticed that Win Explorer window would no longer open.  It would start and was running as I can tell from monitoring what tasks are running, but a window would not open.  I tried rebooting, etc. but no change.  Without an Explorer window, I am dead in the water.

So I was forced to do a Windows Restore (after discovering that my Acronis True Image backup for the C: drive was corrupted.  Sigh.  Lot of work for messing around with this script.  I would recommend that you ensure you have good backups, just in case before playing with this thing.

I've been looking for something like this for a long while.

I tried it.  The script worked somewhat the first time.  There was no progress indicator.  Maybe I selected the wrong options but it changed more folders than what I had selected.  The 2nd time I tried to run the script, it generated an error.  I think I will have to restart Windows in between uses.

I would like to see someone create a program version (rather than script implementation) with a good GUI.  This could be a very useful function if it were easier to use.

Looks like you guys missed this program:
http://qad.dcmembers...p/category/freeware/

I've been using this for a while and it works well.  Compared to te program in this thread, it doesn't loop through folders and sub-folders though.
