^Are those good enough reasons?  ;)

From http://techreviews.i...lication-in-windows/:

When I was planning to write about FindandRun Robot. I was wondering why would someone need it on a Windows 7 or for that matter a Windows Vista machine. I totally understand it’s need on prior versions of Windows before Windows Vista. But after I installed and started using it I was in love with this utility. Also, it’s much more advanced than Vista or Windows 7 “Search programs and files” feature.

 8) :)

For a start, there's no quick launch in win7. You can get it back but it doesn't stick, for now, reboot and it's gone. (at least on my PC) :D

I know about the 'super bar' but I don't like having everything 'jumping into my face', it better stays hidden, this way I see it when I need it.

I don't really have the time to fool around with win7, so FARR  is the tool that finds the stuff on my computer.

Anyone using or have used ClamWin, I'm currently with it and am satisfied, though I stumbled upon some bugs.

No 'on access' scanner, I don't like that. I use it on the flash drives though.

Have been with Avast for over a week and must say I'm impressed. Much faster than AVG. Lets hope they figure that incompatibility problem with Zonealarm out very soon.

thought you might want to know that FARR is running nicely on Win7

I have started using AVAST - happy with it. Light on resources and seems to do the job.
Thanks

I'll give this a try. AVG license is good until 16.1.09 so still a few days to think.

^ *about* once a day :-\ doesn't sound very convincing.

I'm hunting for something new/different too at the moment. AVG license is about to expire so where to go from here? Besides, AVG has started to annoy me a bit lately, FARR-trojan, note++-trojan, three a half word .ini file of Lupo Suite-trojan, + a few more. The only thing that ever changes on my laptop are *.odt files that I type myself but every AVG update comes up with a few more trojans/viruses. The bluudy thing is not even on the uni network so where should those viruses come from? [/rant] :-[

Is Zonealarm AV any good (so far I only use the FW)? I could get it here at a discount through student->dad->retail connections.  :-\

Prior to AVG I spent 2 years with Bitdefender, I think I'm cured from this evil for the time being.

What now? :(

Problem is AVG might eventually recover, they had a similar 'false positive attack' a while back (February/March 08, I think)

Necromancer warning lol, but threatfire have released a new version, V4, released just very recently.  They claim to have fixed many problems with it. http://www.threatfire.com/updates/

I have always liked the idea of threatfire but found in the past that it interfered with bootup and seemed to slow things down a lot and I would remove it, this version, while only a few hours old on my laptop seems to be behaving much better.  Claims of reduced annoyances are yet to be seen bit so far so good.
I've tried v.4 and even desperately tried to make it work. It seems like the 'old' problem with AVG Pro hasn't been resolved. It was previously said that when Threatfire is added to the exception list of AVG it will work but for some reason the whole system still freezes on boot up at times. TF keeps showing 'initializing' and nothing but a hard shut down will help.

I've tried it on 3 computers with different set ups except for AVG is on all of them. Now I'm not so sure any more who the culprit is as AVG has given me quite a few false positives lately including FARR being a nasty trojan :o

The firewall doesn't seem to be the problem. That's the only thing I'm pretty sure about.
Tried with:
Comodo FW, Webroot FW, Zonealarm FW, my AVG license expires in January. I might give it another try then.

Is that through eduroam? I'm having some trouble with my univ's wireless too..

I  Besides, I think she said Wi-Fi does not work under Linux as well, so it could be something different, maybe a problem with the Wi-Fi network in itself.
At my previous uni I had to buy a Linux compatible router myself as I was the only one using it. Generally, when I mention Linux to the locals I get a 'well, yeah and what is that?'. No way can I convince my students to switch, not even to Open Office. :(

35
Very nice :D Thanks  for the tip.

After 10 minutes. Just tried their notepad too. Launches faster than Note++. That's what I was looking for. Time to start un-installing, jEdit (nice but slow), EditPlus3 (fast, but the version I have isn't really real :-\, I don't like that), Note++ has gotten slower with every new version. I'm not really a programmer so all I need is opening a text file fast but with tabs and an explorer please.

I find that a majority of people who complain about vista either A. Never used it, B. Used it for 5 minutes, saw a UAC prompt and quit or C. Simply like to tinker and end up breaking something and then blame vista for it.
I haven't really got a problem with Vista, just taking the pee a little :-[

I'd fall into category C-, tinker->yes!!! but blame->myself  >:(, actually 'scorn' would be the better word.

37
Licenced vista users should just install windows xp.  I just did that this weekend on my wife`s laptop and her laptop runs twice as fast and I do not need to spend another 100 bux to run it smoothly.
Although I voted 'no' I guess they do deserve some sort of 'dummy discount' :D There was quite a bit of talk about Win7 before Vista(Win ME2) hit the market.

Edit: ^ you beat me to it

You guys are AWSOME!!!! unbeleiveable....every time i need something...you guys never dissapoint....VERY NICE!!!!

I've given up on it for now. There's a 1k files per session limit and that's simply a bit too cumbersome. I'll try later again when I've got more time. Right now it's mid-term-test for 120 eager-to-learn-Maths-students  :D I'll try dropbox too.

have you started using it yet biox ?
was wondering how it works... thinking that it would nicely hold my photos with a bit of room to spare ;)
sorry, cant help you on laptop
Had it running last night and it did upload 1.5GB, the plan was 8.1GB. I find their upload application a bit awkward to use as to non-resizeable settings window (rather small) and a very fast scrolling log. I know that I can read the log later on but then there are 3-4 hours wasted if something went wrong. I'm running an incremental backup now in an attempt to get the remaining folders over there.

Tomorrow morning. Doesn't make sense to try anything 'upload' in the evening here (22.00). Hopelessly oversubscribed ISPs.

It looks like www.adrive.com has officially started both free and commercial options. The free option gives you 50 gb for personal use.
Trying it out as we speak. Signed up for the, apparently, free 50GB version. Seems a lot for free but I've run out of options.

I guess here is as good a place as any to ask a dumb question. I'd like to upgrade my lapdog (Presario V3000) with a 160-200GB HDD, if that's possible. Problem is that I don't trust the local vendors (I'm not alone with this) and it doesn't look like I'm going anywhere in the near future. I've looked on the I-net but I think I don't really know what to look for with my very limited laptop experience. Lets say I've found a lot but still don't know what works. Can any of you experts please point me into the right direction?

And you expect them to make a change like that to an OS which is nearing its EOL?
I'm too old to still 'expect' anything  :D

What do people expect?

Some sort of useful tray clock (Linux style).
The last SP of any OS is always a minor collection of all existing updates.
They had to give in once or twice or ... why not once more. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that Vista becomes a second ME. At first M$ was very loud and fast to throw Win2k out but then........, Vista on all new PCs and notebooks but then...............

Oops - I must have been checking against RC2 - the MajorGeeks file IS identical to the MS one. (Sorry for the confusion).

Strangely the RC2 file I have has all the same 'Properties' characteristics as the final release versions.
-Carol Haynes (May 04, 2008, 03:34 PM)
Well, I downloaded both (again) and I wouldn't be surprised if RC2 was just slightly different or not different at all.
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers experience with the operating system.
-M$
I don't think they have done much.

Just downloaded XP SP3 (English) from Microsoft

Checked files size with the version from MajorGeeks and it is a different size from the version I have on my hard disc. Same KB number, same build number? Has MS updated the SP3 installer or have I got a duff original download from MajorGeeks?

Could some kind soul download the MS version above and check byte sizes with the MajorGeeks file and see if I am wrong?
-Carol Haynes (May 04, 2008, 07:28 AM)
Your link and http://www.majorgeek...ce_Pack_3_d4323.html are both 316 MB on my site of the world, same number as well.

Those 2 weeks means that it won't be less than that. Once the time is up it can be anything including 'Sorry, we can't find your lapdog anymore, care to buy a new one?' :P

Which one?  My notebook? Yeah, absolutely. It's at HP service and certainly shut down as they don't work Sat/Sun. :P

Biox, the first dress on your businesses homepage is stunning! Your wife is very talented.
Yeah she is. I would like to put a few more pix up but would have to get the permission from the customers first. I don't like those headless pix and there will be a little description under the pix in the future. But that isn't the most important thing at the moment. The wife's been sleeping in the shop for the last 4 month cos of too much work and I need to learn more about all this stuff cos the wife can't speak English but most of our customers are westerners.

You know, the old dog new tricks thing.
Almost a year and nothing done to the website. The wife's got too much work already. I'm afraid if I really did something and get it up in the rankings I'd be sitting alone at home for rest of my life. :-\
