Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: SilverNote
« on: January 13, 2013, 01:45 PM »
@adamc - Just patrolling through the forum and found SilverNote.  I'm really liking what I'm seeing!  Here's my thoughts:

Pros:
- integration with Dropbox.  YESSSS.
- Simplicity - like how it lets you do all the things that an actual notebook can do:  write text, draw pictures, erase, cut and paste, drag things in.  V. nice, intuitive, and fast.
- Tabbed documents - I like having this option.  It's nice for a notebook that doesn't have too many things in it, because it keeps everything accessible.
- Being able to search multiple categories easily.  Nice.
- Random little touches, like the unobtrusive capture feature, the ability to save drawings to your basic shapes library, and the screenshot and word count features.  Do like.

Wishlist:
- Fill Function Tweaks - It took me a bit to figure out how the fill functionality worked for drawings.  I was trying to do it like in Photoshop:  select fill, then click on the area you want filled.  Took me a bit to select the drawing first.  I'd suggest making the function work like Photoshop, though, because otherwise the user has to alter their drawing style based on whether they want to fill or not.  I can't use one stroke to make, say, ground plus some simple flowers, and then make the flowers different colors, for instance, the way it currently works.
- Label Function  - Does the Label function do anything?  I get it on right-click of an object, but entering a label doesn't seem to do anything.  I was hoping that maybe it was a captioning type of function that would automatically group text with an object.
- Link Function on Drawings - Likewise, does the Link To File function work on drawings?  It works on text, but going through the same procedure with drawings doesn't seem to actually link them.
- Prettier drug file depictions - Purely an aesthetic thing, but when dragging a file (and thus creating a link to a file) onto a notebook page, you can't format it in any way.  You're stuck with whatever your (possibly ugly) default shortcut icon for that file was.  Allowing some formatting here would allow people to prettify up their file links a bit.
- More export options - I know that this isn't a program only meant for text, and thus that html is the best export format for the expected text-plus-pics page, but as a writer, I mostly WILL be using text.  It would be great to be able to export into a universal text format, like .txt or .rtf.  Also, as someone who is eternally wary of locking anything into a program-specific format, a way to export an entire notebook in a nicely-labeled way would be appreciated.  I DO LOVE that the program works with non-proprietary formats (saving everything essentially as an html), but the labeling is not useful if, say, the program goes away and all I'm left with is my repository and I have to find something in it or export it somewhere else.  At the very least, I'd have to rename every page's index.html file.

Seriously, though, nice work.  I like it lots, and if it was portable and I could drop it and its repository into Dropbox to use wherever, I'd be very tempted to use it as my primary writing app.

Living Room / Re: Strange subtleties of the Placebo Effect
« on: April 01, 2011, 10:01 PM »
I have heard of studies showing the placebo medicine works even when the subject KNOWS it is a placebo. I'll try to find those; but I have a lot of feeds related to science...

I believe the paper you're looking for is here.  There's a pretty good summary of the general media attention that the paper generated here (Dr. Gorski is a big skeptic of "complimentary and alternative medicine", so that flavors his reply).

I found the study interesting, but Gorski does have a huge point:  if you tell someone that a placebo has been "shown in rigorous clinical testing to produce significant mind-body self-healing processes", then you are NOT giving them a real placebo.  You're giving them something that, in their minds, might very well make them feel better, just like every other blinded placebo-based study.  Essentially, you're telling them that this "placebo" may have an active ingredient.  So, basically, the study is a demonstration of placebo effects...but probably not a study of what happens if you tell people the real truth about their placebo pill (ie, that there is no physical reason a placebo should make you feel better).

Neat program!  I like the look of it, and I appreciate the simplicity of the interface...so many notetaking programs try to throw everything in, and it's just too much.

Some thoughts!

1.  One suggestion I have is to allow the user to do multiple import/export commands at once (ie, choose more than one file via shift/ctrl-click in the import dialogue or have a wizard where you can add lots of files to a queue and then import/export them all).  I'm a writer, and I'm plotting using this thing for organizing some of my existing writing...but importing each of hundreds of .txt documents one at a time sounds not fun.  I like how you've made .txt and .rtf the import-export formats, though.  I love me my non-proprietary format!

2.  The filtering and searching is FAST.  Granted, I don't have much in there, but it is really snappy right now.

3.  If you want to cater to the writers, a fullscreen distraction-free mode with no toolbars and a word count function would win you points with them.

4.  Being able to change the default font and background colors would be nice (it's nice to be able to do a dark background with light text at night).

5.  Any plans to support some sort of tagging?  Would likely make this more useful for journal-takers who might want to do entries named/filed by the date but then tag to identify the content of the entry....

Overall, though, this is pretty much what I've been looking for in a journaling/organizer program.  Keep up the good work, and thanks for the discount!

Living Room / Re: The Root of Game Piracy
« on: August 15, 2008, 10:51 AM »
Awesome.  I'm glad that he learned about some of the things that make me NOT BUY games (I'm too much of a wimp to pirate, but the reservations that make pirates pirate instead of buying also make me just not buy, period.)  The one that came to mind for me was the "this demo is tiny, how do I know the game is going to be worth my $20?", for instance.  He gets a lot of props for not only asking but listening and allowing his customers to change his mind.  Dropping the DRM and dropping the price of a game he really likes takes some guts (and will probably make me buy said game.)

KoL is really awesome as casual games go.  The balance between grinding and moving forward has been tweaked well.  Also, it appeals to a lot of different "gamer instincts".  Whether you like collecting items, beating the crap out of hard monsters, grinding to be the one who got the furthest down into that nasty dungeon, making money/playing the economy, or just sitting back and enjoying the fun gametext, KoL will have elements that appeal.  And there's more than enough stuff in the game to keep it fun for way past one playthrough.  I could easily beat the final boss without having gone through all the interesting (as opposed to tedious, imo) quests that are available.

General Software Discussion / Re: Quizo QTTabbar

Thanks, yksyks!  The Restore tabs option was what I was looking for.  It's one of those things that makes sense once I know what it's called, but at the time was just vague enough to make my eyes glaze over it.

And thanks, Curt!  I haven't really played with Groups yet, mostly because it seems buggy on my computer.  When I go to the Groups screen and create a new group or tell it I want one of the premade ones like My Computer, it keeps giving me an error message:  System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.  It does that whenever I add or delete a group or group member, or when I try to hit Apply.  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything.

Ok, so I may be missing a checkbox somewhere, but is there a way to make qttabbar remember its tabs from session to session?  I can get my tabs set up just as I like them, lock them, etc, but if I close down the explorer window and start another one, I'm back to square one.  Is the only way to have my tabs persist to not close down explorer?  I have to admit that I like the ability to set explorer to minimize and close to the system tray, but I try to watch my memory usage, and sometimes I really do want to shut down explorer....

Official Announcements / Re: January 2008 Software Drawing Winners

A...awesome!  My first time entering the giveaway (and my first post here :coughcough:), and I win!  Thank you so much!

I can understand your desire, Mouser, to try to give everyone a fair shot at the goods:  the folks who don't have cash but do participate, the folks who don't participate much but donate (like me  >_>), etc.  I have to say that as someone who essentially is brand new here, I appreciate you trying to take everything into consideration.  :)  And really, there's no better way to draw people into a community than to have them actually win something from a contest like this. Though I won't likely have a lot of time to post/watch, feeling like I'm not shut out from things like this just because I don't post all the time makes DC seem like a much more welcoming place.  Thanks again.
