Thanks, but I'm not looking for more books and I live in California   :D
I am just curious about the legalities involved  :tellme:
How do you pay duty on a ebook transmitted over the internet.... is there any duty?
I've never even heard the subject mentioned and it never entered my mind until I saw those options for different countries mentioned in the Free Kindle eBooks newsletter  :D

84
ooops..

spoke too soon  :-[

here's the update promised....

"Microsoft pulls updates, recommends uninstall"

I'd pull the updates listed in that ZDNet article. MS is working on a patch so going back to pre-problem date and then re-installing updates when the patch is issued may put you back where to want to be

Neither Launchy nor FARR caused the problem, so penicillin won't help  :D

86
It says that is an update but I see no change since the 16th

87
Some of the updates were bad and can be removed.............

but of course "lifetime" is not the lifetime of the Photo Commander series, but the lifetime of 'your' version 12.

and of course if version 11 will do what you want....... it's free   :D

Another nice one is BookBub.com. They have both free and cheap ebooks, and you can select categories of interest and specific retailers, and they will only email you when they have something that matches your preferences.

So, you can configure it to only notify you when they have cheap/free sci-fi and cookbooks to recommend on Amazon, if you want.  Wink

Great  ;D , and while you're here maybe you can clear up a question ricocheting around in my mind  :tellme:
My post above was posted mainly because it contained information for users outside the U.S.
Duty, tariffs, taxes, all suddenly popped into my mind!
When people outside the country get an ebook from Amazon is there any payment involved? Some places have a value added tax; does that apply to ebooks
The whole thing is interesting and never crossed my mind before............
like, you know, "a penny for your thoughts"............ is that a VAT or a fine for thinking that thought   :D

I could use some help here  :-*

Living Room / Re: HDMI cables
« on: August 18, 2014, 09:30 AM »
But anyway, I didn't mean to derail the topic. I still turn primarily to Monoprice when it comes to buying cables. Especially things like HDMI cables. (c:

Thanks for bringing us up to date!

I've been shopping Monoprice for years without incident  :)
Many years ago I acquired a 20" CRT type monitor (at a yard sale) and both the power cord and hdmi cable were missing
BestBuy is about two city blocks from here.
Headed to BB where the dapper young dude in charge of cables produced an hdmi cable, 25 ft long, for only $49.95  :o
I was informed that it would work perfectly for a desktop computer and the extra cable could be tucked discretely behind the desk  :D
It was almost exactly the time I discovered Monoprice where I purchased both cables for that old monitor, and a spare 6 footer, delivered at my front door for $14 bucks.
and Sir  8), I'm betting that with that picture in a short email you'd soon receive a new cable in the mail. Surely they are interested in what they're putting over the counter and that pic tells the whole story  ;D
It may be an exercise in futility, a sorry return on time invested, or it may restore the confidence in Monoprice that we've all had for a long time  :D

not that I'm a protagonist or sumthin'   :P

Best I could do on short notice  :(

If you have an Amazon account simply search free beer books.
That was the only one there just now but that's a dynamic site and there may be a dozen tomorrow.  :D

I'm also wondering if I copy and paste a link from an RSS feed directing you to Amazon if that would work. You have an Amazon account, hmmm

Some relief for the idly curious about The Shadow mentioned above:

The introduction from The Shadow radio program "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" spoken by actor Frank Readick Jr., has earned a place in the American idiom. These words were accompanied by an ominous laugh and a musical theme, Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Rouet d'Omphale ("Omphale's Spinning Wheel", composed in 1872). At the end of each episode The Shadow reminded listeners that, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay... The Shadow knows!"

Wikipedia has more about The Shadow.... :P

regarding the July and August Win8 updates

This looks like a lot of hoopla about nothing!
I have only one of the four supposedly bad updates, that was an optional, I'm working fine as it........
Shadow say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
The Shadow knows ........ 8)

More info as it comes in will be posted   :D

I'm surprised! Win IT pro seems to be the only one with the story that I can find.

MS is supposed to post a fix as an optional update in Win8.
I haven't got anything in updates..... Jul and Aug updates were installed on the 13th.

Hell,maybe  I've got a scoop   :P

I have an extreme aversion to any software capable of accessing the network that is created by a large company or a company capable of partnering with a Big Data company.

I understand your position but I think you're pushing on the end of a wet noodle!  :D

Until you are in a position where you can get to the other end of the noodle where you can pull... go with the flow, and hang on to your end, as uncomfortable as it may be. When I sit down for supper, and chocolate pie for dessert, and momma says "go wash your hands before you can eat" you can bet that I'm on the way to the bathroom  :o

The system is bigger than both of us but it takes two to tango. If we object to and stop tracking then the freebies stop!
I'll take the free books, free software, free deodorants, or anything else that I can use and the donors can follow me around all day if they want. (I'll admit it was tough giving up the porno movies  :-[)

Your VM idea sounded good at the outset but I get all these free newsletters, book lists, freeware lists and deodorant samples streaming in via push technology, so I just go with the flow. Messing around with a VM takes effort and that puts a value on the freebies which I wouldn't pay very much...

It's a matter of perspective... like the 81 year old talking to his doctor. "Hey doc, I got married since my last visit. Met the cutest little 19 year old blonde I've ever seen. She makes a mean TV dinner and the sex is fabulous. I asked her to marry me and she said yes  ;D
On hearing the word "sex" the doc cocked his head and asked "you're 81, how often are you having sex?", to which the old codger replied "well we been having sex every night but I'm sure the excitement will wear off after a few years"  8)
and a rapid response from the doc, "every night  :o  you realize that could be fatal???"
The old newlywed thought for a moment and then replied "well, if she dies, she dies!"

I think he's on the right end of the noodle  :D
YMMV  ;)

I follow Windows IT Pro through Feedspot RSS and WinIT pro has three posts regarding the July and August Win8 updates from Microsoft.
They post the instructions of what to do, where to do it, how to get it and I'd take a look now!
The above link will take you to the Windows IT Pro site as posted by Feedspot.
Have fun  :D

I'm just getting started but it sure sounds like fun... Whoopee

Living Room / Free eBooks
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:29 PM »
http://kebooks.com/2...-deals-sat-aug-16th/

There was a discussion in another thread about free ebooks but there's information here that may interest people outside the U.S.A..
I don't know if this is a change, a big change, or even of interest to anyone.

There's lots of info in the page but at the very bottom is some info regarding people outside U.S. signing up for free ebooks, depending on the country where you reside. Some countries are listed by name and there's also an International area.
I get an email every day listing free ebooks and you can also get the list by genre.
If you sign up, I would suggest you select the genre you're interested in, but get a list for each genre. Scrolling through a long list of book titles every day where you may find nothing of interest gets old fast. Sometimes if I'm busy I delete the whole list without a glance  :-[
To get the free books you need an ereader for your PC program. All free, take your choice  :)
You need an account at Amazon... also free.
And a warning........... the list is daily and the books may only be free TODAY. When you select a book it opens in your Amazon account where it also shows the current price. If it's not shown as Free don't select buy unless you're prepared to pay the listed price.
Clear as mud but if you have questions or need help reply and I'll try. I've been getting the How-To list for a long time and I've accumulated a sizeable library  :D
