Thanks but why pay for antivirus?
2  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: TrueCrypt alternative on: July 07, 2014, 06:18:45 PM
More alternatives: So long, TrueCrypt: 5 alternative encryption tools.

Once again, TrueCrypt 7.1 and DiskCryptor are recommended.
3  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: TrueCrypt alternative on: July 03, 2014, 09:19:35 AM
CipherShed is free encryption software for keeping your data secure and private. It started as a fork of the now-discontinued TrueCrypt Project (coming soon):
https://ciphershed.org/

GUI appears like a TrueCrypt clone.  Looks promising.  Too bad it's still in development.  Thanks for the heads-up.

Interesting read, cyoung_mi.  So stick with v7.1a for now until late summer of 2014.

Have been following Lincoln Spector's advice for years and he recently posted this: Data-encryption alternatives to TrueCrypt.

Excerpt: Currently, I’m still using TrueCrypt. But I don’t know for how long. TrueCrypt, like many other public encryption applications, can be cracked with some effort and the right tools. With no updates, it might become more vulnerable over time. If a new version of TrueCrypt doesn’t rise from the ashes relatively soon, I’ll seriously consider moving over to Cryptainer LE or ME.

At this site, it's referred to as Cypherix rather than Cryptainer.

Helpful and not too long article on this topic from a credible source: The life and untimely demise of TrueCrypt.

Excerpt: My recommendation to current TrueCrypt users? Don’t panic! But also don’t deploy any new versions of TrueCrypt; simply maintain what you have. Based on the OCAP audit, TrueCrypt does not have any back doors and still provides secure encryption that can’t be easily cracked.

Article also references BitLocker (again!) and 7-Zip.  Think I'll just stick with v7.1a for now.
7  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: WinXP registry hack enables further security updates on: June 11, 2014, 06:01:50 PM
Just searched "Security Update for Wepos and POSready 2009" and found no complaints about loss of functionality from those who've installed the hack (except from MS) and these latest updates.  Will probably give it another week before seriously considering installing the remaining four although the third listed (for IE7) looks quite definite.

XP box's Win Update found five more today:

Debating whether to hold-off installing.  Software Removal Tool - June 2014 is the only definite one.

Aside from this issue, posting images in this forum has become rather confusing.
9  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: WinXP registry hack enables further security updates on: June 01, 2014, 11:12:28 AM
I am playing a bit of a dance on trusting the mags/scuttle between today this hack works, vs whatever random time MS sends a "land mined" update the net will start screaming.

Good point about landmines.  Maybe best strategy is to: 1) hold-off on further auto-updates until enough time passes without screams, and 2) backup the registry before installation.  As for the four updates mentioned in my initial post, I found no complaints so far except from MS who wants users to spend more money a newer OS.

Should add that today, the day following installation of the four updates, my net connection didn't work initially and avast! AV acted strangely even after a warm reboot.  Then did a cold boot and here I am.  Thinking that perhaps avast! needed to "analyze" how my system changed and then decided it was okay after all.

Say what you want about PC World but I followed the advice in this article, "Windows XP registry hack keeps security updates rolling for the dead operating system" and windows update found four extra updates for my WinXP SP3 box:

Installed, rebooted and everything seems fine so far.

Now that TrueCrypt is dead, I and likely many others are looking for alternative freeware disk encryption programs.  MS's own BitLocker is mentioned often but to my knowledge can only be used on certain versions of Vista, Win 7 and 8.  Also have heard of DiskCryptor but this program appears to be not the most user friendly.  Anybody?

13  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: ImgBurn - full of OpenCandy and other crap on: May 20, 2014, 09:46:34 AM
Although I use mainly CopyToDVD, ImgBurn has been in my DVD toolbox for a while now and have always downloaded it from http://www.filehippo.com/.  You'll notice that the site includes links to older versions of the programs.

UPDATE:  Just used ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 downloaded from filehippo to burn THE_CONJURING.ISO to DVD+R and the program worked fine as before.  Chose custom installation and simply rejected malware instal but still understand thread-starter's complaint.  Shouldn't have had to deselect anything.

Installed Ocster 1-Click Backup from GiveAwayoftheDay and now Ocster sends me these deal alerts. Use mainly Acronis True Image so can't critique Ocster product but discount is substantial for those in the market for backup software.

You need to try Easy Screencast Recorder http://www.donationcoder....are/Mouser/esr/index.html, though it's not really meant for that task, I think

Thanks.  Installed Easy Screencast Recorder and captured about 20 seconds of one of the embedded flash videos at http://www.ruger.com/products/lcr/extras.html.  ScScreencaster Video Preview box opened and the video played but without sound.  Then played back .asf file in VLC but video also lacked audio.  It's as if the sound component of the video file is not being captured or an audio codec is missing although that would surprise me given VLC's versatility.
18  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Flash video capture on: March 21, 2014, 05:36:49 AM
Sail a different course with this.

Thanks for the tip.  Did everything through, "Rename the <some weird code>.tmp files you'll find in I:\ to <meaningful name>.flv and watch your flash video's in VLC."  Unfortunately, none of the .tmp files renamed .flv (even a longer .dll file) worked in VLC.  What I actually did was only change the extension of all <some weird code>.tmp files to <some weird code>.flv.  Even changed a longer .dll file with no luck.  Will try again later.
19  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Flash video capture on: March 20, 2014, 05:28:24 AM
I actually meant capturing flash videos as they're playing on the user's screen similar to what Free Screen Video Recorder does.

According to the program's site: Free Screen Video Recorder is a compact, yet full-featured screen video recorder and screenshot capture tool that allows you to easily record screen activities and capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, menus, full screen and rectangular regions.

I usually use the FlashGot extension in Firefox to download videos but it's unable to capture embedded flash videos.  Thought I read that you configured SC to record screen videos as they played (as Free Screen Video Recorder does) but maybe I'm mistaking SC for another.

How do I use SC to capture embedded flash videos like for instance those shown at http://www.ruger.com/products/lcr/extras.html? Can it even do this?

23  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Revo Uninstaller Pro at Bits Du Jour on: February 09, 2014, 05:51:52 AM
I've used the free version for longer than I can remember and it's always offered the pro version for 50% off via an icon in the free version's GUI.  60% off is something to consider though.  Already have Winpatrol for monitoring so can't see spending $15.7 for features not much beyond the free version.
