And it comes even better: Win a brand-new Huawei P10 Lite smartphone! Together with Digiarty Software, we are giving away a brand-new Huawei P10 Lite smartphone.

Says here that the heads of FBI, CIA, and NSA recommend not using use Huawei phones.

This is nice, however my main concern is will this slow down the system?

Not in my wheelhouse so maybe someone more knowledgeable can answer this.

Thanks, man.  For those interested, found the free license key worked with the Giveaway installer version but not with the normal SUMo Lite setup version.

General Software Discussion / Re: Download manager

Recently have been using Free Download Manager with good results.  Thing is, the most recent version, 5.x, is complained about as bloatware with decreased functionality.  Advice which I took was to install the last good version, 3.9.7 build 1627 available at Filehippo.  Integrates as seamlessly with FF plugin Flashgot as NetXfer did.

DownloadThemAll! worked great but this works a little better.

The name alone is reason enough to try it.

why are they several times saying that the bundle is version 2017 (click "Get this deal")? Am I to buy a lifetime key for version 2017, and 2017 only?
 :tellme:

I bought a lifetime license to WinPatrol PLUS almost ten years ago and its always updated to the newest version at no additional charge.  So in that case, lifetime meant just that or at least as long as they stay in business.

I've used WinPatrol PLUS for years now with good results.  Has allowed greater control over what crap gets on my hard drives, warns of unwanted system changes after program installs, and other useful stuff all without being a system hog.  Can't recommend their other offerings since I've never used them.

Skwire Empire / Re: Release: sWeather (tray-based weather app)
« on: June 13, 2017, 05:58 PM »
Thanks for fixing the forecast link.  The radar page still doesn't load (as it used to) and I'm thinking that it's because weather.com is just another site that won't work with Firefox or Firefox with certain plugins.  That's becoming more common.

Over the last two days, found Full Forecast and Radar link issues: 1) The former's page (http://us.rd.yahoo.com) times-out (server not responding?), 2) The later (weather.com) doesn't load the radar (page script change?).

I'm running v 1.6.8 build 1.

Everything else seems fine as before.

Here's another privacy article.  I subscribed to the print edition of PCWorld for years so I trust their content.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread, BTW.

40
In a PCWorld article, VPNs were mentioned as one of three privacy tools one should consider to combat the recent Internet privacy rollback, so this service might be worth considering.  Maybe OpenDNS isn't enough.

However, the article states, "Your next step is to subscribe to a paid virtual private network service—not a free one that collects your data and sells it to third parties for analytics, or uses ads to support its free service, because that would negate the entire point of all this."

Just installed the Giveaway version.  Thanks for the tip.  Do you favor the registry cleaner because it's less likely to do damage like CCleaner's?

Apparently JDownloader's default installers are infested with adware.  There's a post with a link to installers that are supposed to be adware-free:

    https://board.jdownl...4861&postcount=1

I haven't tried anything to do with JDownloader, so I can't vouch for the link in the post. I'd suggest taking whatever precautions you might think are appropriate.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The link leads to other links that contain adware bombs.  Think I might just pass on JDownloader for now.

In the mean time, DownThemAll has been fine and the author of Net Tranfser refuses to acknowledge the lifetime license I won here.  Shame on them.

I've been using JDownloader 2 for a few months and really like it. Give it a shot!
http://jdownloader.org/

I like that it's open source and stand-alone.  Downloaded but Panda AV neutralized many of its files during installation so I canceled. Do you think they're all false positives?

Installed DownThemAll as an FF Add-on and found good results, thanks.  I'll miss Net Transport though as a stand-alone program.

Now that Net Transport (NetXfer) is no longer functioning and the author isn't responding to emails, need to find a new freeware download manager.  Any recommendations?  Thanks.

I am using Foxit Reader currently , but it's a bit of a minefield to install, and I would like something without adds.
I dumped Foxit for Sumatra PDF.  Loads faster and less intrusive.

MailWasher Pro's been free the last two years via Giveaway of the Day.  Seems to be the best email controller out there and I like it but also think it's an unnecessary luxury.  Not as good but always free is PopTray.
