Windates.  Have used this for longer than I care to admit and it's never failed to meet my needs.

Screenshot Captor / Save location issue
« on: February 27, 2013, 02:38 PM »
Even though I've selected C:\Users\XXX\Desktop as my location to save screenshots and they are apparently saved there, they don't appear there.

A file search shows they've been saved to the desktop but I don't see the file on the desktop even though I'm logged in as XXX.  Is this a program issue or a Vista SP2 issue?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Ad Muncher - half off
« on: December 25, 2012, 10:33 AM »
This program is no ad-killer panacea.  Too many still get through and lately, have been having an issue where my browser (FF 17.01) stalls with the URL preview in the lower left corner of the browser window reading, "Connected to interceptedby. admuncher.com ..."

Author had no remedy beyond blaming my browser but he has generally been very responsive to support questions.

Well-l-l-l ... I downloaded, installed ... but the registration code did not work.  Nothing (that I found, anyway) on the site seems to help <sigh />.

Since it's now 12-23, it's probably too late to activate this software but the following worked for me:
[email protected]
License Code:51015149101495198545

The email address was given in a comments section at bottom of download page and license code after installation.  This whole give away was setup similar to those offered on http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Experience has been that some of these supposed giveaways expire after a time even though not mentioned in offer.  We shall see, I guess.

Just downloaded and installed it as mentioned.  Don't understand why you got that message.

http://giveaway.glar...ordingsuite2.5.3-59/

Installed it on a WinXP box with some difficulty so can't comment on quality but Glarysoft has decent rep generally.  Hoping it'll record Hulu.

One day only so get it free while you can.

Good one, Curt.  Just installed over old version and copy/pasted new reg code.  Haven't used this often but still nice tool as a backup.

I never got around to using it, any experiences with it these days on recent windows version?

It not working is the exception rather than the rule.  For instance, it still doesn't filter encrypted (https) sites, there's a particular ad on my excite.com portal that it can't handle, and a very few scattered others.  Configuring "My Filters" for non-browser applications is a bit tricky but author always seemed committed to help in all support issues I've raised.

Found Deals and Discounts / Ad Muncher - half off
« on: July 13, 2012, 05:05 AM »
July 13, 2012 - We're celebrating! We've been working extremely hard on v4.93, and to celebrate finally making it available we're running our biggest sale ever!  We've halved the price of all Ad Muncher licenses, including renewals for the next seven days. Just use the coupon code "BiggestSaleEver" when purchasing.
https://www.admunche...amp;utm_medium=email

I hate ads and have been using this ad killer for years now.  Yeah, I know; Ad blocker for Firefox is free and works well but Ad Muncher works globally (not FF-specific).  What's more, author is unusually responsive answering support questions and that's half the value in software.

Has anyone run across a tool to replace BN yet?

Since March, BN has apparently resumed service fully as previously posted.  Are you reluctant to use them again?  An alternative, though not complete, is ChangeDetection.com.  Used them to monitor a vendor site but updates became too frequent so had to cancel change alerts.

Another video converter for the toolbox.

Site also offers free utility programs - or should I call them "apps" now? - daily.  Most just take-up precious disk space but some are genuinely handy. See Windows software of the day under Discoveries of the Day.

Found Deals and Discounts / Norton Identity Safe -- Free Download
« on: April 30, 2012, 09:38 AM »
Norton is offering Norton Identity Safe, a password manager free forever. Just download the software and install. Also warns you about rogue websites.

I used to use Access Manager Free and now use KeePass but free stuff is hard to pass up especially if it's from a reputable company.  Have mostly found Norton products to be bloatware, however.

You guys are probably right.  Maybe he was having temporary personal issues or something.

FWIW, I'm encountering two issues:
1) "Notify me when a new WinPatrol is released" hasn't worked for me.  I never get a new release email even though I signed-up at least of couple of times; and 2) when I install a new version - after checking manually! - the old version still shows under installed programs, so it shows both the old and the newly installed versions.  Have used Revo to delete old version's entry.  New versions of the majority (if not all) programs I have on my systems overwrite old version install entries under installed programs.  Appears WinPatrol requires that I always uninstall the old version before I update it with the new.

Otherwise, WP+ has performed as advertised.

As a WinPatrol Plus user, sent author support questions over a month ago, twice, and still haven't heard back.  In contrast, I ask Mouser a question about ScreenshotCaptor and it's answered five minutes later.

http://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/

According to consumerworld.org, "From April 11-15 only, the makers of WinX DVD Copy Pro, are giving away free copies of their program that allows you to make backup copies of DVD discs you own for safekeeping."

Downloaded free winx-hd-converter-deluxe today.  Just wonder if this'll expire after a year and how much spam is involved.

http://www.poptray.org.  Hasn't been updated apparently since September, 2006 but functions well anyway, is free and checks GMAIL accounts.

Received multiple software update notices today from "[email protected]."  Couldn't believe it.  They're so darn handy that can't help but hope they're really back.

Godzilla - the biggest, most monstrous of them all.

Sorry to get off topic but my favorite too.  Have four Godzira movies in my collection.

Needed a .pdf conversion program a while back.  Downloaded trial of another one that didn't work well and was overpriced so used it once and uninstalled it.  PDFZilla offered too much utility to pass up and generally trust Ashraf's reviews so added it to my software hoard.

After installing on a flash drive and configuring it, have found this version to be a suitable alternative to Powerdesk 7, a file management utility I've used for a long time.  Kind of glad also to no longer patronize Avanquest, marketer of Powerdesk.

Thing about these GOTD programs though as I'm sure many of you have found, is that they can't be reinstalled after a system trash.  Have also found that the reg codes on some programs have mysteriously vanished due to over-aggressive registry scrubbing; my fault I guess.  Best action, of coarse, is to just buy the program at a discount which is often offered.

General Software Discussion / Re: Fileforum.Betanews alternative

Thanks for the TechTracker tip.  Since it works by scanning the software installed on user's computer and alerts user when updates are available, it seems to be a variant of Secunia PSI which has served me very well.

Beauty of F.B was that nothing needed to be installed.  User simply added programs to wish list on site and was notified of updates.

From the lack of responses so far, there appears to be no real alternative.  Guess F.B business model wasn't profitable.

Depended on http://fileforum.betanews.com/ automatic email alerts to track software updates on my program watch list but they've apparently discontinued that service.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative?
