General Software Discussion / Re: Inventory Software
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:24 AM »
I stumbled across this one last night  Inventory Solutions which is a $30 shareware program.  Its tailored to home/office/church but has a number of the features I am looking for.  I haven't looked at the reporting part yet but am thinking its lacking.

ps.  I did try attaching a screenshot I made using Screenshot Captor but it wouldn't post.  The attachment was only 126kb.

I looked briefly at the programs that dspelley mentioned but its not quite what I want.  I will take a look at the SQLNotes but not sure how hard it will be to customize.

I will do that.  I just started looking a few hours ago but haven't found much taylored to my needs.  I suppose I could sit down with Access 2003 or 2007 or Filemaker Pro 8.5 and take a stab at it but building a database like this is kind of beyond my giftings.

I am looking for those existing programs, just having problems finding one thats pretty much already setup for someone in IT to just start using.  We need if for insurance purposes as much as I need it to help me track what I have in what room or building.

Our school is looking for a good piece of software to help with inventory.  It must be able to record details about anything from a desk to a computer, printer, or even a bus!  If it could also record service info that would be good also.  I am thinking it needs to be able to work with bar codes and print out labels.  Printing reports would also be good.  it wouldn't have to be free but should be reasonable.

What have you guys used in the pass??  No, databases and me do not get along very well.

General Software Discussion / recover data from a bad floppy disk
« on: January 18, 2008, 11:22 AM »
I know floppies are fading away like dinosaurs and occasionally Windows XP has issues with them.  So is there a tried and true method for recovering the data when XP tells you "the disk isn't formatted and needs to be formatted before using it"?

Our school no longer uses Win98.  And since I am needing to install Vista on a spare computer  :(, I do not wish to have another one setting around with 98 on it.

So what software (preferably free) has anyone used with good success or what method have you found that works ok??

I tried the Windows in a Box and it was ok.  At least it didn't install anything which is good.  It runs from a menu and the menus aren't sorted alphabetical to make them easy to find but by how many characters are in the file name.  That is "Restart" would come before "Shutdown" since it has fewer letters.  Not exactly easy way to find something.  I also didn't see anyway of changing the sort order.

Post New Requests Here / vehicle maintenance program
« on: January 17, 2008, 05:38 PM »
Looking for a program that can be used between several users to track different vehicle repairs for our school.  Something that would include year, make, model, VIN #,oil changes, etc..  They would also like to have it pop a scheduled reminder say when an oil change is due (by date).

Any ideas if this is doable or can you recommend a program that could easliy handle this?

I was just reading the latest newsletter from Windows Secrets that was talking about some of these programs like Windows in a box and XP Syspad.  I was just wondering if anyone had ever researched any of these to know which one is the  best and if there are more out there that could be better.

Thanks for the idea Lanux128.  I just got done trying FARR ver 2 and it works straight out of the box.  And very fast!  Very fast!  But it only seem to be searching My Documents.  So I went in and added c:\ to the "search folders" tab and that works ok.  It found 582 spreadsheets in 34 seconds that were scattered all over my hard drive.  But it only displays the top 9 items with no way to "scroll" through the list.

Maybe there is a way but I haven't found it yet.

Dave

P.S.  maybe this thread needs moved somewhere else??

Perhaps this has already been done but I am looking for a faster way to search the hard drive than Windows XP has.  Does anyone have anything?

tabletguy, E-Sword has 44 languages to choose from if English is not the only language you know.  Simplified Chinese is also listed on their site.

Thank you Lanux, I will give that a try.  I wasn't aware XP had a built in to handle this.

One of the things alot of our users struggle with is how to easliy resize pictures for the web or to send via email.  Our yearbook and web design classes use Adobe Photoshop but it is too difficult for the avarage user.  Our current web hoster doesn't allow uploads any larger than 1 meg in size.  They have not been able to tell us what size to resize them to or what program to use other than Photoshop.

I have looked on the net for programs but most have more than one option to resize them to.  I believe that something like 320 x 240 or 96 dpi would work but do not know for sure.

Its too bad there isn't some program that would allow us to browse for the location of the picture and select it and then have a "web" button or "email" button that would automatically resize it to the correct size and also be below the 1 meg limit.

Any ideas??

I am not entirely 100% certain but I always figured E-sword was from the open source Bible project called Sword.  http://www.crosswire...rd/software/biblecs/.  They appear to be very similar to me.

So I will take a hint from Tinjaw and start a new topic.  I am always on the look out for any kind of Windows software written for education that is free.  It seems we are always looking for typing programs particularly for K-2 grades.  Trying to find free networkable, server installed software is has been difficult.

Also if anyone has any free server software that will help administer a Windows network running Windows 2003 I would love to hear it.

Since our 3 schools are each in a different town that is 7 and 12 miles apart and 19 miles from end to end, I do a fair amount of running.  If it wasn't for UltraVnc I would go crazy.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Personally I use E-Sword and have for the last 5 years or so.  Before that I used the Online Bible but I like E-sword better.  It is free and you can get it at http://www.e-sword.net/

It is highly customizable and you can download only the Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries that you want.  It is also available in other languages and they have a version for the Pocket PC all for free!

Hope this helps,

Dave

P.S.  I just love this site for all the helpful software and tips you guys offer.  I wish there was more stuff tailored to the K-12 education sector.
