Thanks for the interesting read.

The Firefly quotes sound exactly right.  Wonder how long it will take until Google runs the universe?

Looks like Google Wave will be able to to "everything" instantly. Somehow I got the impression that perhaps the dumbed down protocols (twitter) might be more successful than the complex ones.

http://www.pcmag.com...,2817,2347795,00.asp

"......What is Google Wave? Think of an open-source version of Gmail constructed via instant messaging. To start a wave, two users start what is essentially an instant-message session, which can be archived as a conversation. Other users can then be invited to join each wave or conversation, and there's even a "playback" feature to track the process of the conversation. Google also said it intends Wave to be a platform as well as a protocol, with the appropriate tools and extensions for each.

In fact, it might not even be accurate to call it a reinvention of e-mail. Google executives tied the instant-message/e-mail model to real-time document collaboration, even search, and extended it to the Web and to blogs.  ................."

http://bits.blogs.ny...-collaboration-tool/

"..... Google Wave is an application running in a Web browser that creates a shared online desktop where two or more users can interact easily. They can exchange messages like they would do in e-mail or instant messaging conversation. They can share and edit rich documents that include formatted text, images and graphics. They can also drag-and-drop simple applications called widgets into a Wave to, for example, play a game together. And they can save and publish any Wave resulting from their collaboration to the Web. ...."

challenging facebook?
http://www.pcworld.c...ork_oversharing.html
" ...  One of the problems with Facebook is that most of the things you share through it go to everybody you have friended, whether those people are relatives, tennis buddies, coworkers, or your boss. But few people want to share everything with everyone they know. The stereotypical example, of course, is posting pictures of weekend debauchery and having your boss see them. But it's not just a matter of being unintentionally embarrassed. Sometimes you come across a video you know your friends will love, but your mom and dad just won't get the joke. Or you want to share a work-related link with professional colleagues, but know that your friends will be utterly bored with it. ..."

Living Room / a not-so-geeky blog on PCs etc.
« on: May 19, 2009, 02:18 PM »
I recently found the Auslogics blog by accident.
Contrary to their own description the blog is mostly not about Auslogics and their stuff. Instead it has a lot of general PC tips and news, and to me it appears mostly written exceptionally well. Instructions for non-geeks. For example:
http://www.auslogics.com/en/blog/2009/05/how-to-stop-svchostexe-high-cpu-usage/#more-598
The blog is not updated very frequently, but I find most posts well worth reading.

A lot of programs can open and work with PSD files, but none will support all the native photoshop features. Obviously there is a big variation on which program can duplicate which PS effects.
Since you have a version of PSP (which), which is very capable in it's own right, what kind of text effect would you like to achieve? Can you post an example?

132
Kartal,
I do not know of any editor capable of doing this.
But I have been searching for this feature for quite a while.   ;D

General Review Discussion / Re: Free Total Commander licences

This is black-mailing !!!  But I will see, what I can do.  :P

I like this service: reliable, free, no sign up necessary; however limited to files under 1 GB (big enough for me):

Living Room / Re: Revolutionary Keyboard
« on: May 04, 2009, 01:57 PM »
We got one similar keyboard as a present.
Yes, the keys do feel weird and mushy - but it is the most silent keyboard I have ever encountered.
That is even a bigger plus than the splash-proofing.

I agree, Paint.com is really nice and speedy in what it does.  A great project ! (with a perhaps not so well chosen name?).
Is the main difference to your "RealWorld Photos" the option there, to do the lossless JPG editing?

137
Most people are probably aware of it, but you can always get a very recent version of Gooogle Chrome from which all the auto-update and call-home-to-mama-google features have been surgically removed. Works great for me and it is my standard browser for the laptop (since the UI is so space saving)- even online banking is no problem.
The tamed chrome version is SRWare Iron:

138
It would be quite surprising, if this would be legit ???
The lifetime licenses directly from the source are very affordable anyhow.

Mmm... Nice app! 8)
Free version, Pro $75(plugin&multiprocessor),  Home $60, v4xx option
BTW. I found in Google distributor who offers it with a bit chipper price  ;)

139
.... and if you register the old free versions of their programs (from freeserifsoftware.com ) you will very soon get email offers for very nice discounts on Serif software.  If you can stand this type of marketing.   :-[

Hi Curt,

I believe PhotoPlus is not a highlight in image editing power, but very good regarding the UI and documentation. As mentioned above, I believe it is great for beginners.  However, I can recommend two other Serif programs without any reservations:  DrawPlus and PagePlus, both offer some outstanding features while still being very user friendly -definitely for both beginners and ambitious experienced users.

141
I do not remember details about photoplus - other than  that I did like the documentation very much; certainly great for beginners.  The accompanying book is very good.  I believe that Paintshop Pro and PhotoLine are in the end the more powerful image editors in the same price range.

142
Hope you are having fun with  your breadcrumbs.

The AC Browser Plus solution is very  neat, because it allows to navigate almost the entire file system intuitively directly from the "address" bar.
2009-04-02_130330.gif

I am aware of the tabs in ACBP whose locations unfortunately do not have any relation to the location of the file manger windows to which they belong. The window management in ACBP has the disadvantage that every new window overlaps old ones and each window has its own header, footer and title bars (to the side) taking up way too much room. It lacks the clean, predictable and efficient organization of a tabbed dual pane setup.
Unfortunately the, certainly brilliant, author of ACBP does not seem develop it anymore or are there any news regarding ACBP?

143
hi BinderDundat,

thanks for the tips.  But the one thing, that is missing from AC browser Plus (which leads me to use it rarely) is a dual-pane layout (preferably a tabbed dual pane option).  The problem for me are the multiple independent overlapping windows.  With dual-pane I actually believe it might be the best file organizer.

144
The SRWare Iron version of the Google Chrome browser works just great. It is also updated quite frequently.
For me this is the best browser for laptop screen real estate.

www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

145
....  and the breadcrumb navigation in AC Browser Plus is just perfect - this is the way it should be !!!
Unfortunately I can not deal with the multiple overlapping windows in ACBP too well.

I think its been mentioned but is still a relative unknown. I really like Ac Browser Plus especially how well it handles archives or at least zip files.

Another free tool with quite luxurious options is Studioline Photo Basic
from:  www.studioline.biz

147
Does anybody know if there is anything to the "complete low-level defragmentation" that Paragon promises?
Is this anything special and provides real world advantages?

148
Currently you can get better spec'd Acer aptops for $400 at Bestbuy and Newegg for example.  I bought one two weeks ago - bigger hard drive, 2GB memory ( a single stick), core duo pentium, draft-N-wireless, etc......
And of course go with the OS that you know best yourself.

A few directions regarding the type of the desired content likely would be helpful???

AsmDev,
these sound like very useful search options, no doubt.  Hopefully the UI remains relatively straightforward.
