IMHO locking out the user doesn't qualify as "causing damage"

I think it does. Locking out in a wrong time can cause serious troubles...

Imagine you are a bus driver and the same happens when you have the bus full of people ;)

mouser:
an issue which is not resolved by your solution is that donating users are punished as well by necessity to input serial number everytime they install some of your programs which is annoying.

So I suggest:
maintain two versions of each program, one with nagging baloon, one without. The first one would be publicly available, the second one only after registration/20 posts/donation etc.

Advantages:
  • no serial number => no punishing of donating/active users or even users willing to donate
  • users will be motivated to be active
  • no "stamp" of baad serial number software
  • no need to maintain serial number procedure
Disadvantes:
  • need to maintain two version, but from my point of view it would not be time consuming at all if designed properly
  • Download servers might offer the "pro" version, but this can be resolved in the licence

My idea can easily be incorporated into your wizzard idea. But to the wizzards I would say they are to plenty. Two max three would be enough.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Plugin related feature requests
« on: October 21, 2008, 09:46 AM »
It sounds to me like you need completely rewriten list mode. Fot that I would create my own "list mode" in HTML view mode (since I know javascript only :-[ ) and do all the necessary stuff there using premade libraries like scriptaculous etc. You would be able to solve all the issues mentioned ;)

Or I think you can get handle of the window a put there anything you wish. This might also solve that?

BTW: if you decide to write your own list mode pls share ;)

106
well I am javascript coder only. So for direct notepad integration somebody else might help. What I can offer you is to make javascript notepad using tinymce.
Se full features example:
http://tinymce.moxie...om/examples/full.php
and simple example:
http://tinymce.moxie.../examples/simple.php

But again I would do it only if there is enough demand for it

EDIT: just to make sure, although tinymce is built for HTML, it would be directly in FARR htmlview window and it supports hot keys such as ctrl+back, control b,i,u,save etc

Cant you just use aliases with:
igo http://docs.google.com/?action=newdoc
igo http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?new
igo http://docs.google.c...ion=new_presentation

and to see already created documents:
igo http://docs.google.com/#all

All shortcuts like ctrl+s, ctrl+z work there ;)

Edit: if there was a demand for it I could try to write a plugin using google docs api

If you like offline version you can always use zoho with google gears

Hey czechboy, thanks for the quick reply. Your suggestion of using Google or Zoho, even if offline, are good because they let you keep your files in a central location. Unfortunately, (though I may be wrong) that means I have to keep a browser or gears window open all the time. What I'm looking for is Windows Notepad functionality built-in to a FARR plugin for a quick, low-memory plain-text editor with no bells and whistles (like printing, text formatting, etc). A find and replace function would also be nice, but not necessary.

If this can be done without Google Gears installed, that would be terrific, but I can understand that plugins should appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Maybe my use of text snippets isn't so popular.  :D

107
I'd like to second allen's request for a built-in text editor. I use text files to store idea snippets in a Reference folder, but it's a waste of time having to open up the text editor or Windows Explorer from FARR each time I want to view or edit the files. Some features I'd like to see if someone does decide to make such a plugin are:

- Hotkey compatible (undo, save, ctrl+bksp!!)
- Cancel changes by escaping out of FARR
- Copy/Cut/Paste compatible with Klipkeeper
- Create new files by typing the name of the file with the plugin alias

Thanks in advance!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:37 AM »
Is there anything in the timer settings windows internet explorer box? also try to delete and install timer from scratch because we had some issues of having wrong version of timer on http and we could not get rid of it ;)

109
so you want to
1) force people to attend this forum
2) force people to think about donating

1) you could just add a checked option in installation wizzard to open donationcoder forum and if user likes the forum he will sign up for sure. You can also ask for an email in installation wizzard and send newsletter directly without signing up

2) again you can incorporate this idea into what I have writen in 1). That means put into installation wizzard donate button, talk about donations in the newsletter...

So the result would be:
A) No serial numbers
B) No signing up required

if you go around the net you can find a lot of discussions why people hate to sign up (for example when buying online etc). This is fact and we should obbey it. There are so many other ways how to let people know about forum and donating then FORCING them

110
To be honest I do not understand the idea of forcing people to sign up at all. There are so many people who do NOT speak and understand English. They would normaly download it from some local download server and use it, but now they are forced to sign up in English.

Maybe better would be to put there notice that this forum exists and how to sign up but definitely not to FORCE them...

For example, I think that serial number policy discriminates FARR against Launchy and other alternatives, which is pitty

EDIT: this also holds for donations

111
:trout:

I'm glad to see people are thinking out of the box.  But I found it quite annoying that I had to register a program that's essentially freeware, go through the whole rigamarole including signing up for a forum, and waiting for a verification email, when all I wanted to do was license the screen capture program.  DONATIONS should NOT HAVE TO BE SOLICITED until AFTER the user's gotten a chance to USE the program without annoying nags or service interruptions.  I believe you make your user happy, then nudge after 60 days towards provision of donation info, you'd have gotten a donation from me.  I am not sure I want to donate having been irritated by this software before even getting the chance to use it! It is an irritation up there with the programs that attach a web browser starter to the program's uninstaller so you don't get a choice whether to open a browser and TAKE a SURVEY about why uninstalled the program.  I will ALWAYS take these surveys but only if the author gives ME the choice to open the browser and take the survey on my own instead of forcing open the browser before I agree to it.  People will do what you want them to if you guide them in non annoying ways.  Don't insult our intelligence in other words...

    :-\

Thank you for listening to this criticism,
Anakata

I completely agree. I hate serial numbers. And this is exactly the case where no serials are needed at all...

It should work without period as well just by hitting enter. try to type "tm settings" and check if everything is set correctly

everyday at 5PM some alert
I will probably add it when I have time  ;)

113
try this, it works fine for me. Also you can define you own hotkey. Go to FARR settings/Hotkeys. Add new with "set search text bellow" checked only and in "text for search edit box" input "test\s". I have tested it with win+s

EDIT: you can also check "copy selected text" and type into "text for search edit box" "test $$c" instead. So it would copy selected text and add it as input ;)

Hi,
great plugin ;) I like the idea of using list mode  I have to start using it as well ;)

Just one think. When I tried to link my RTM I was not able, since I have set "Window mode/focus => Hide when focus is lost", so always when it redirected me to webpage, FARR lost focus and I was not complete linking.

Hi, if you use FARR you can link any hotkey combination to "tm in 2 0 0 take medication". So starting timer would take you to press hotkey hit enter and you are done..

« on: September 21, 2008, 04:24 AM »
well I have never used that plugin much:) but I think you have to type & at the end.. if you would like to I can try to rewrite it to "enter"

you can also try this one:
http://czb.dcmembers.com/Timer.html

123
You can import KML files.
Try:
http://www.kamelwriter.com/
A major feature of KaMeLwriter is it’s ability to link data from Excel spreadsheets when editing KML files.

or
http://www.northgates.ca/KMLEditor/

I have not tested them.
If you know a little of XML you can use directly:
