hi, the organizer program would be _integrated_ and have a central place that is useful to look at. say we enter a bunch of tasks for monday, and part of those tasks aren't finish; then the program would remember whatever was leftover and flow it onto the next day and forever until all these tasks (and more that will be added) are complete.

Alpha,
This is a "rollover" feature and is available in many information management applications.

There are hundreds upon hundreds of apps like this on the market, too many to mention. Many will allow you to choose which side of the screen you wish to view your tasks. I can't think of the name for that, but I'd probably add "tasks pane", "custom" & "user-defined" to my search for now.

 :-\As for the rest,
Can you list some programs & their features that you've tried in the past? What did you find useful or annoying about their features?

Jim,

Try this http://www.movielink.com/.
I don't know how it works, past this:
Last week, I downloaded the service and a movie for $3. I have a month from that date to watch it.
However, once I press 'play', I have 24 hours to watch it.

I've seen no ads or odd behavior on my pc since.
[Edit 12/2008: Blockbuster service since sold out, app would not uninstall]

I don't think it's running in the background, but you'll have to see for yourself.
(Not understanding what runs in the background or why, I have no interest in this until it gets in my way.)

I didn't read the terms. If I did, I'd have no services at all, I'm sure of this ;)

Anyway,
good luck :)

General Software Discussion / Music files 101
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:52 AM »
Hi,
I am in need of a quick and simple education in music files.
I mean, quick - no CNET courses or anything like that, just either a recommendation to a website that speaks to beginners, or instructions from someone here who would want to help a complete beginner. Here's what I'm looking to do:

I've recently inherited about 300 CD's (mostly classical).

I'm thinking of recording these CD's to an external drive, then posting the files to the web. But, I want a program that can read all of the details - I don't want to type in the name of the piece, the composer, etc. but I noticed that Windows Media Player could not detect all of this information, only some.
So, I ended up recording only 1 CD & decided it was too tedious of a project.

Now, I'm thinking that it would be really nice if my other family members could access this music online.
Actually, I'd like to share it with anyone who wanted it, but I guess that's not legal (?).
I was thinking about FTP web sites - I've only seen one & it looked pretty straightforward, but I don't even know if that's used for music files or what.

If you're still reading this, you can see that I'm clueless & so I don't have to tell you I don't have a server, an iPod or any knowledge of any computer languages. Only a laptop which records CDs & an external drive. And a really big box of CDs.

Any help would be appreciated!

Then there's that rubberized, self-bonding tape that'll make an an instant non-slip grip on any tool handle...
-cranioscopical (August 13, 2008, 08:27 PM)

I like that tape too, but the kind I have can't be cleaned...kind of gross (if yours can, please, tell me the kind you're using & I"ll get some).

I've never heard of gaffer's tape, but I have some Gorilla Tape that's actually holding a very large, heavy wood dresser together. I think temperature & technique might have something to do with it, but still, I love this stuff!

Not cheap, but worth every penny.

Skimp: Wine, Computer Speakers
Splurge: Vacuum cleaner, Kitchen Table

 Now, there's someone who knows how to live.
Did you just get a new vacuum cleaner, too???

:o Almost all "everyday items" are made poorly! The designs of some of these items are great, but...at least, in the US,
materials + workmanship = crap. I'd be interested to know just how you've managed to escape this  :P

The tip about the credit card is a golden one...I don't even have one anymore. ...

...You can not believe what a relief this is ;D...or maybe you can imagine if you are on "other side of the fence".

I can believe it, credit is a bad, bad thing in the wrong hands (mine)!!
I don't have it anymore either, & I do not miss it.
There is no ad, no offer, no promise that could make up for the black cloud of constant debt. Blech.

Yeah, lower back pain seems to be a normal part of life for me (particularly when trying to sleep).

I'd be interested to hear people's experience of these devices.

I'm currently in physical therapy, and  :-* also get electrostimulation...looked like some hocus-pocus device at first, but it's really helpful. He puts 4 electrode things on my back & has me lay down on a large ice pack. I don't know if it's the TENS or what, I'll ask tomorrow.

And (blehhhh... :P) the exercises there actually help, too.

Perhaps it's because I had braces twice that makes this gadget so special, but  :-* OMG it's soooooo refreshing. :-*
Too bad, it's not made very well. I'm on my third one in 2 years.
Fill it with half water, half mouthwash and blast away:

I love Camtech. On my last laptop (XP) I used Copy This Path and found it indispensable. I can't tell if their software works on Vista or not, but I appreciate the link. Upon revisiting their site, I see they do computer repairs in my area  :D so, thanks!

Sorry...I should have made it clear that I was responding to the post that says the latest version of DO is buggy, & advises others against using it. (Zak, I thought.)

(My laptop is broken & from the Palm I've yet to see how to respond to a particular post...responding to the last post in a thread seems to be my only option.)

Of course, these bugs were reported, no? I mean, as one mod had suggested, in the spirit of the new year, giving GemX the benefit of the doubt or even another chance at offerring better service...?

I've DSM'ed them a couple of times, & in both cases , I've rec'd timely responses with explanations, as well.

If you don't try at all to get your issues addressed, than perhaps this really is an unproductive branch of the DC board (I'm always the last to figure these things out)...

This, imho, is retarded. NO APPLICATION SHOULD INSTALL TO C:\. Not in the modern day and age.

Josh,
When I got Vista last summer, I had to reinstall InfoSelect to C:\, after installing it to Program Files and realizing *nothing* was saving.

I was told that Vista does not allow most programs written prior to Vista to write data to C:\Program Files.

I haven't had any problems with this installation. I just installed do-Organizer to C:\, as well.
Forgive my ignorance, but is there some particular reason why this is bad?

No, their website says they're in development and are working on upgrades! That's great news.

Who knows? Granted, GemX was pretty small & low-key, but they've been around for a while. You couldn't run even the smallest business for this long with so little customer response. Even if GemX could get away with being unresponsive, they clearly had much higher standards than that. If you just read the GemX web site, you'll see a lot of effort & a lot of good intentions.

GemX presented their work, from one upgrade to the next, including all of their correspondence with me, very professionally. I found Peter not only to be kind, but also and very patient, unassuming, honest and upfront about his work. He was very appreciative of the input. He was very professional.

Of course, I know this is not common knowledge, but anyone who communicated with GemX at the start of (or prior to) the GemX forum would agree that this situation is very strange, and very disheartening. Prior to GemX opening their forum, you just couldn't find their customers complaining on forums of poor service.

So, all I'm saying is, where is the benefit of the doubt? They had a good reputation before. Perhaps they will, again.

I certainly don't think customers are obliged to concern themselves with the welfare of companies they patronize.
But for anyone here who feels insulted, or assumes GemX is too arrogant to respond appropriately, have you considered that perhaps, you might be wrong? What would make you or me shut down like that?

The once-responsive, ambitious, hard working developer is not communicating.
This is not a good sign. Sure, it would be nice if someone would make contact, but that's not happening, either.
Another not very good sign. Perhaps I'm wrong. But arrogance, I don't think, is the issue.

Well, I never met the man, personally, but I was in contact with GemX and beta testing since v1.4, before the forum opened, and...well, he just struck me as being rather conservative, even humble...someone that would much sooner respond to a propblem than ignore it and risk his reputation.

I cannot base someone's character on a forum as short-lived as that one was.

Just curious, if anyone's heard from Peter since October...
I'm thinking that perhaps he's been ill? I mean, GemX has been in business several years, and it seems out of character for Peter to just cut off communication with everyone all at once. Has anyone any ideas?
