General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« on: November 10, 2008, 07:17 PM »
I just can't see much use for having a bunch of sub-items not having any source.

Keep in mind that the basic (and simple) concept behind IQ is that items are like individuals. They exist and they have properties (i.e. field values).

Items exist independant of their parents, their children, and field-values. If you die (delete an item), the children, parents remain, etc. This is absolutely critical in understanding IQ. You have properties (field) or different types (text, number, date, etc) (age=38, hair=brown, Birthday=1965-06-21, etc)

If your grid source is a yes/no field called WorksForCompanyABC, and you enter all the people working for CompanyABC there, then all main items should have that field checked. I agree.

But if you start adding sub-items, representing say, the children of the employee, then you don't want them to have that field checked (the child does not work there).

Another example, is that at any time, you may want to move an item under a parent (changing parent or adding a second parent) (e.g. a file may be used under 2 projects). You want to associate the file with the project (by being a child), but you don't want to affect the field values of that file).

OK, thanks, I'll try it a little later...

But, yet another reason why I feel if an item is created in a grid, that grid should by default be the source for that item.  I just can't see much use for having a bunch of sub-items not having any source.

if the source is a yes/no field (i.e. the concept of a folder), and when the item is created there (as opposed to created elsewhere and later on added as a child to a parent, perhaps even a 2nd, 3rd parent), I'd agree with you (and you can set it in the field property), but for a grid with another type of field as its source (date, text, number), it does not make much sense.

I'm trying to export to Excel...I highlight all the rows of items in my grid (all of them), and then I click the export to excel button.  I open the file, and only the very top level item is there.  How do I get all the other ones to appear in the excel file?

Export to excel needs improvements. Currently, it exports all items that belong to the grid, not all the items displayed.

To do what you want,
1- use copy/paste and use tab-delimited format, or
2- you can tag all desired items (right-click > tag), open a grid and set the source to ItemTagged and do an Excel export

I have a few apps that clip just fine. I do want to get the data into SQLNotes/IQ, and when its clipper is on par with others like Evernote, OneNote 2007, or Ultra Recall I'll use it. In the meantime it is easier for me to clip with one or more of those - depending on the type of content - and then import, copy or cut & paste, or drag & drop it into SQLNotes/IQ.   :)

That'll work for now.

Jim

Expect the FF extension for InfoQube in 1 -2 days. It is working and I'm testing it right now.

I understand, but the issue here is not just editing, it is storage. Other clippers have just 1 storage per file. In IQ, you can:

- put it in any folder (i.e. field), to be displayed in one or more grids...
- You may also want to control what will be the item text
- You may also want that the item keeps accumulating your clips (format: URL + CR + the actual clip + Hoz. Line), as an aggregate page

Just an update... I'm finishing up the FireFox extension, which will ease web content clipping
1- Grab whole page, plus URL
2- Grab current selection, plus URL

Anything else worth grabbing? i.e. Title, page date, grab date, etc.

What are your thoughts on UI. Should the clip go straight to the database, or should you be presented the New Item UI, to better control the import? I can hear the answer... you want both  ;)

It appears to just be copy/paste of text into a cell. Not sure I would compare that to capturing web pages, unless there is more to it, though I cannot find any instruction or documentation of this anywhere except your post. Is there more somewhere?

When you paste the HTML content, make sure you paste in the HTML area (click on HTML button or Alt-H to view it).

As for having to paste both content and URL, you are correct and this will be fixed when the FF/IE add-ons are done. It is impossible to know the URL from what is in the clipboard...

It is simpler to capture the entire page. Simply copy the URL (or drag-drop it) to the URL textbox and check "Copy Content". You can choose HTML or MHT formats

It was fixed. You need to restart the program after changing the hot key. What hot key did you set it to?

I actually like evernote(even the lates one) But it is a pain in the neck to get multiple data out of it.   I tried Ultrarecall as well and that one was pretty cool. But again that app was more than capturing web pages. I am actually looking for something more specialized, something that just focueses on capturing content and exporting.

I know you've tried InfoQube (aka SQLNotes) a while back. It does reliable web-page capture. What would be missing to be the solution for your current needs:

1- FF and IE context menu (to copy content)?
2- Simplified UI?
3- Integrated editing pane (à la EN) where items and content can be created in a single window?
4- Other...

Very sad, though  :(
But possibly not for you Pierre  ;)

Competition is generally a good thing. Also, the concept behind both programs is not exactly the same. There really isn't anything else quite like UR, so this is very unfortunate for the UR users. Let's hope, they change their mind.

The same thing happened to Ecco in 1997: released version 4.01 and shortly after closed it up. Sales was partly is issue there too.

This is sort of off topic, but I've just made a wishlist for Calendar functionality HERE, and wondered whether IQ is likely to be able to do any of that. It seems to me to be the sort of databsase driven program that might.

I would say all is planned except:
I would like to be able to drag new items on to previous items and have the previous item automatically made into a folder with the same name and containing the new item(s)).

Instead of the item being made into a folder, the item would have sub-items (1 sub-item for each dragged item), in keeping with the IQ concept

Thanks Armando, you are the man.  Seriously, Pierre should hire you!  One day, I want you to write a big long thing about how you use IQ...I'll even feature it on my website.

Well, you've guessed right...

For years, I was both developer of IQ and consultant (to existing corporate IQ customers, here in Montreal). While this helps pay the bills, it does slow down development. So I needed to find consultant(s) to help me out with customers and posted a number of messages to encourage users to become IQ consultants.

As Armando and I live near eachother, we have met a number of times in the last year and it appears that Armando should soon do part of the consultant work and become the first IQ consultant  Anyone else interested?

Pierre

# A Grid is a view - the Grid view is dictated by the "source" field which is usually a tick-box field - if something is ticked in this column it is shown in the grid.
If you create a new grid, say called "LOLCats", a new field is automatically created called "LOLCats" - top-level items in this Grid have field "LOLCats" ticked.

tomos,

Now you are confusing me too! The "Source" is a toolbar with a drop-down menu that sits directly over the top of the grid, isn't it? I think what you are describing here is what you see when you click on "Manage Fields".

Or maybe I am just not understanding your point.

Jim

Both you and tomos are correct. The Source bar is the toolbar just above the grid. The grid source is the left-most combobox, the filter is shown in the center and sort is on the right side [edit] These control what items are displayed and in what order [/edit]

I think Ctrl-Q is the live search.

Yours may be CTRL-Q, but the default for search (i.e. live-search) is CTRL-F, either way, you'll find it in Edit>Find

I'll be releasing version 0.9.23.7j, which fixes a few bugs and I've added this feature:

- in HTML pane: tab indents, shift-tab unindents (works for regular text, numbered items and bulleted items (big thanks for the suggestion!)

The Win-N shortcut can be changed in Tools>Options>Program Settings>Other>HotKey as Armando said. It is elsewhere, because it taps into the OS...

Other shortcuts are changed (as in MSOffice) by right-click on a toolbar>Customize

To help, I've added the Introduction and Applications pages. Getting started (a little bit outdated) is a good start too.

Maybe I should rephrase my question. Are knowledge of Excel and Access required to fully unlock InfoQube's capabilities for notetaking or I can skip both of those programs and InfoQube would be able to guide me towards that goal regardless?

The concept of "fully unlock IQ's capabilities" is not really relevant as this is not really defined. As superboyac said: you can make it do what you want, as simple or as complex.

Consider VBScript support... you can use it, it is an advanced feature. Excel also has VBScript, very few Excel users actually use it, and many experienced Excel users never coded a single line of VB.

Example an advanced use: I use IQ to manage IQ donations and licenses. Using VBScript, I can generate the 20chr license key from the User name and an ID, store it with the contact. IQ can then send out an email with that info, plus the details of the donation (with a big thanks and a BCC to me for my records). The pivot table is used to calculate revenues per month/year. Now you don't need to use all these advanced features (IQ here does what would be done in Access otherwise)

[edit] Example of a simple use: I also use it to grap copies of web pages, for reference. Win-N, paste some content OR paste link to copy the whole page. Sometimes, I assign the clipping to a particular project, sometimes not (knowing that live-search or the Journal will allow me to find it quickly)
[/edit]

>if I just need it for this purpose wouldn't I be better off settling for one that just does this without the learning curve

Yes and no. Many people evolve from plain notetaking to PIM features. You may want to add tasks for yourself, link your notetaking to projects, to contacts. Adding tags to items to organize them, do brainstorming, etc. So starting with something expandable allows you to grow as your needs grow. As you get familiar with IQ, you'll most likely start using it for new things.

I'm now in page 15 with the conversation about the JazzSheet guide and I have to ask: Do I need to learn how to use Excel and Access in order to understand InfoQube?

The thing that's worrying me is that it seems the thing that made superboyac eventually adapt and use it is his understanding of calculations using spreadsheets.

No knowledge of Excel or Access is required. IQ can be used for regular notetaking (i.e. text). But it can also be used to store/manage numbers in a way similar to those programs.

re wiki:

It is silly to voluntary erase wiki content, as it can always be restored. I get an email anytime someone makes a change (that one slipped through the cracks somehow), so that is why I do not require logging in to make changes.

Calendar buttons (=DateFilter toolbar) with no file open=crash: You are right   :-[

Thanks for finding that one. I'll fix it on monday

I'll agree that the UI needs cleanup (that's part of my job) and that the concept is AFAICT unique, but conceptually it is NOT complicated:

1- Items are the basic unit of information
2- Each item can have any number of field values
3- Those field values can be text (any length), date, numbers and yes/no [edit]Checking a Yes/No is like putting an item in a folder. In the Properties pane, double-click the folder to see its content [/edit]
4- There are system fields (item text, Appointment date, etc) and user-defined ones
5- One such system field is ItemHTML. It has its own editor, word-processor-like
6- Field values can be displayed as columns in an Excel-like grid and as rows in the properties pane (more ways to come)
7- Items can be organized in hierarchy, supporting multiple parents
8- Items are displayed in a tree-view (more views to come: Calendar, Mindmap, etc)
9- Everything is saved in a multi-user database (JET for now, others to come)
10- Items and values live in the database, not is a view (consequences of this: (1) some items may not be displayed anywhere and (2) can be displayed in many places)
11- Other applications can access the data using ODBC connectivity (each grid with its displayed columns is accessible)

Yeah, I checked that, but it doesn't work for me.  I mean, it doesn't show the html pane content.

Did you get it to work correctly?

OK got it. There is a small bug. You can either:
1- Uncheck use HTML style bulleted list, or
2- make sure you select item rows (Item>Select item)
