Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Opera to move to webkit/chromium rendering engines

I've got Opera M2 emails going back to 2000. Regardless of what benchmarks show, Opera has always seemed infinitely faster to me than IE or Firefox. I vowed never to try Chrome when I read that it couldn't be uninstalled w/o screwing up Windows.
If necessary I'll just stick with old-fashioned Opera until it no longer works on Windows, and then run it in a virtual machine.
I wonder if this move is the major philosophical difference that forced founder Jon von Tetzchner to leave.

I'm coming to this post rather late but will share my experience. I took care of my mother for several years before she died. To be prepared for emergencies (and there were many) I always carried a flash drive with TrueCrypt-protected copies of her advance directive, power of attorney, POA for healthcare, photo ID, Medicare card, etc. A couple of weeks before my mother died I had to prove that I had the authority to determine who could be at her bedside in the ER, and my drive did the trick. Institutions will of course be reluctant to pop flash drives into their computers, but if the issue is whether you have the authority to make life or death decisions someone will find a way to view the files.
On the same drive I keep encrypted copies of my driver's license, insurance cards, home insurance policy, etc. If I lose my wallet 500 miles from home or my house burns down I'm reasonably well protected. You decide what level of protection you need.
The original post was about a somewhat different purpose but the principle is the same. Flash drives are more reliable and obsolescence-proof than CDs, but they can break. Buy sturdy ones, back them up, and test them periodically.

If you do want a classic backup utility (with some nice modern touches) try Cobain Backup. Cobain is the only backup tool I never experienced a problem with. It's Cobian. Then they just stopped replying, in the forum and to support inquiries. In March they responded quickly to my inquiries. Unfortunately GBM is incompatible with my Seagate Dockstar but at least I got responses.

You could have a look at AutoSave Essentials. I used to use AutoSave 2 but development seemed rather slow (there have been no new updates in at least 2 years to AutoSave 2) and I moved to FileHamster. Not sure what the difference is between AutoSave 2 and Essentials but it seemed to do what it said on the tin (which includes file versioning backups). I still use and like AutoSave 2. Avanquest ruined a great program with AutoSave Essentials. With AutoSave one could create a definition that would back up exactly and only what one wanted. With Essentials, if I recall correctly, one had to create a new definition for each type of file. It was designed for people who don't know what they're doing.

Hmmm...I'm showing that the download itself is the v1.0.4 zipfile even though the page says v1.0.3. I wonder where they got an older version from?
I think they just saw the version number on your site and assumed the download was the same version; I'd reported that I was using 1.0.4. I have had a rocky relationship with VIPRE and repeatedly uninstalled different versions from one machine on which it wouldn't work, but I think Sunbelt/GFI should be congratulated for responding to my false positive submission within an hour. And a scan I just did found nothing amiss.

Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Free version of O&O Defrag
|
on: January 19, 2011, 11:20:01 AM

Today O&O Software released a free version of its defragger via Download.com. It is also available from O&O Software. From the press release: Functions at a glance Users of O&O Defrag Free Edition can schedule the time for regular defragmentation. For users working on mobile systems such as Notebooks and Netbooks, the defragmentation is interrupted when the machines are no longer connected to the mains, in order to conserve battery life. The drives are divided into speed zones, which not only reduce program and system start-up times but also prevent fragmentation of program files from the very start. O&O Defrag Professional Edition.
The commercially available Premium variation for $49.95 (Update $29.95) has a much more advanced range of functions. Users of the full version can choose from a total of eight defragmentation methods, can configure the zone settings individually, as well as various other settings, and can create as many time-schedules for automatic defragmentation as they wish. The optimization of Solid State Drives (SSDs) for any brand of SSD is also only available in the full version.I realize there are a bunch of defraggers out there; I just wanted to bring this to everybody's attention.

Damn. I sincerely and humbly apologize, skwire. This was my obviously lame and misguided attempt at humor. Once again I have learned that things don't always come across in writing as intended. (I guess smileys do have a purpose after all.) I did not ask for and never expected an allowance for various artists and in fact declined your generous offers for additional features. I was merely trying to say once again that you quickly and expertly helped me out with your amazing skills. Please forgive my unartful comment. You deserved better.

There are a few methods that could attempt to handle this but the original poster didn't request it so I never added it.
Original poster would be me. I didn't ask you to translate AP into Amharic either, but honestly, don't some things go without saying? I still marvel that a few hours after inquiring about software like this I had my very own program in hand. Thanks again. I only wish I had similarly catalogued all my LPs before they were stolen a few years back. I can't remember half the music I had. superboyac, if you ever solve the classical music issue to your satisfaction please let me know.

Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / MSGTAG is alive, sort of

I received the following message from MSGTAG support; the website is still down. I'm posting so that anyone doing a web search might have more luck than I did figuring out what's wrong:
As you probably know we are having serious problems with our current server hosting provider. Despite their market reputation we have had surprisingly long delays in tracing and rectifying an outage that has affected the server that is responsible for MSGTAG tags and the system that allows us to email users about the problems, as well as some other sub-systems. This has meant that the error has not only affected all of our users and customers, but has also prevented us from getting the word out.

I'm a longtime, satisfied user of MSGTAG (lets you know when your sent emails have been read), but the service seems to be down along with their website. Does anyone know if MSGTAG has folded? Has anyone had good experience with alternatives such as ReadNotify?
Thanks.
