Could not find the links on that their site with Google.

2  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Can anyone suggest a freeware program to convert a excel table to a dbase 3 file on: January 25, 2010, 08:48:57 AM
I shall answer my own dumb question.

Just File Save as :

My first instinct was to do a Google search and because I asked the Google the wrong question , it gave me a list of some paid software to do the conversion.

So naturally I assume that one had to have a third party software to do this.

But it was right under my nose in the File Save As:
3  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Can anyone suggest a freeware program to convert a excel table to a dbase 3 file on: January 25, 2010, 08:15:10 AM
I have an Microsoft Excel 2003 file consisting of a list of Names and Titles that I would like to convert to a Dbase 3 file so that I can use it to print name tags. The program I am using to print the labels require the Database to be in a Dbase 3 format.

Can anyone suggest a freeware program that I can use to accomplish this ?

Thanks

I'm wondering if disk defragmentation programs like PerfectDisk, Diskkeeper etc takes the thoughts expressed in the articles below into consideration when defragging and deciding where to place files.

"Big=fast
Most people keep less than 80 GB of data, including the operating system and their applications, on their hard drive. So why should they buy a 500 MB, 1 or even 2 TB hard drive?

One simple reason: speed. That big hard drive will give you this snappiest performance this side of a solid-state disk.

For many applications, even faster than a costly SSD. For a lot less money.

Why?"

Guys, please check the FAQ. For the majority of European countries, and many more, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, you will be paid in your local currency:

http://www.boomerapp.com/about/#rb2

Yes, I have read and I think Tomos and I are referring to the same thing.

The point is that unless the local currency check is issued by your LOCAL bank or the LOCAL branch of the Foreign bank, you are still at the mercy of your local bank and the foreign bank involved.

For example, say in a country like Australia, unless your A$39 check is issued by say WestPac or Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which are Australian based banks, or say Bank of America (Sydney Branch) rather than a A$39 issued by Bank of America (ie drawn on a US bank say Los Angeles Branch), you are still subjected to unnecessary bank charges I'm referring to.

So perhaps the pertinent question is will the local currency payment be a local check issued by the local bank or the local branch of the US bank ?

This determines if the recipient receives the equivalent of US$39 or US$39 less bank commission & other charges.
7  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: BoomerApp.com - New Software Rebates Website from BitsDuJour on: October 20, 2009, 03:26:36 AM
Just thought I will weigh in on this from another angle. And this is not to cast aspersion on the rebate system but to help others recognize the pitfalls.

If you are someone who is buying from other than from the USA, I think you are basically out of luck even if the rebate system is reliable.

Basically, you will get a check Drawn on a US Bank, let's say US$39 in this case for yaTimer.

Now, what are you going to do ?

Go to your local bank of course.

Now if you understand this aspect of the international payment system, you will know or soon find out that your local bank through some round about process, have to exchange this check with a US based bank and in the process, you will find that the amount you get will magically disappear because of Bank commission, exchange commission, etc some of which there is a minimum sum and your final receipt after you have queue up at your bank and paid your parking charges etc is not really worth your trouble.

You may end up with US$10, maybe US$5, maybe more, maybe less. Who knows - you are at the mercy of the local and international banks for the various charges they wish to deduct.

I suggest you ask you local bank what sort of charges is involved in when you cash a US check if you are not in the USA. You may even find that your local bank give you a non-committal answer saying it depends of which bank it comes from.

Unfortunately, when this happens, there will be some rather unhappy people who unwittingly became victims of the "system" and who is going to get blamed. Certainly not the banks.

Now, mind you, this is just the "system" of clearing an International Checks from another country that is not your own country - ie whether you are in Australia, getting a UK or US check.

But if the 100% rebate is for a US$390 software, what is US$20 or even US$50 for bank charges to help pay the fat cats on Wall Street.

Update:

I just read that for certain countries (in their FAQ) , the check will be sent in the local currency. But do note that if again the check is drawn on a US bank, the back and forth thing between your local bank and the US Bank continue to apply and that means the bank commission charges.

Do correct me if I'm wrong.

No, favorites or changed data is not lost until you clear the sandboxie your were using.  And you can recover *any* file created during the sandboxie session.  You can't easily, however, recover registry keys, which can be sometimes useful.

So am I correct to say that any updates to PowerFavourites (the NON sandboxed program) capturing a url say this current thread from Firefox (the Sandboxed program) will be lost when I clear the Sandboxie Firefox session ?
10  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Sandboxie license at 51% off - $14.14 (Jan 15 only) on: October 15, 2009, 02:46:01 AM
Sometime ago, I use to use Stumbleupon and decided to stop for a couple of reasons

1. It was addictive
2. It was potentially unsafe - I was wondering if you could stumble upon a malware infected site.

So Sandboxie may actually remove reason 2.

But ha ha, that still leaves Reason 1 unresolved other than through discipline.

Just wondering, if I had IE or Firefox running in Sandboxie and then saved a few bookmarks to Firefox or a 3rd party program like PowerFavourites (either through a button on IE  or Firefox or a Rightclick context menu selection), would closing the Sandboxie make me lose the save bookmarks in say Powerfavourites (which is not Sandboxed) or Firefox favourites.

I got these comments which were quite helpful explaining the nuances compare with programs like Returnil from http://www.bitsdujour.com...ndboxie-personal-license/

"# Cyndi Queen Says:

How does Sandboxie differ from Power Shadow. With Power Shadow, if you put the computer into "shadow mode," you can go to dangerous websites or install questionable software to try out, and as soon as you reboot the computer, all traces are gone. The one bad thing is that if you want to know how a piece of software will affect the boot process or whether it will slow down the computer after you've rebooted, you can't tell with Power Shadow. Is that true as well of Sandboxie? Does Sandboxie offer advantages over Power Shadow?
#
Jan 15 2009 11:44am
Website Visitor Jay G. Says:

Cyndi, PowerShadow is like Faronics Deep Freeze or Returnil where the entire system drive is "virtualized" or sandboxed, meaning while they're on, all the changes to the system drive are virtualized and erased on reboot. Not only can't you install software that requires a reboot, updating a program typically requires rebooting the PC, having the sandboxer off, then running the update. Likewise, personal documents have to be saved to something other than the system drive/partition before a reboot, or they'll be lost forever.

With Sandboxie, only the programs that you run inside it are sandboxed, meaning that you can run the majority of your programs unsandboxed, and only run potentially vunerable programs (web browsers) or questionable programs inside the sandbox. So you can update Windows and your AV program running outside Sandboxie, make and save documents, but run your web browser within Sandboxie so that any potential malware that it is attacked by is stuck inside the sandbox.

Resetting in Sandboxie is different too, since to clear out a sandbox you usually just have to close all the programs running inside of it and then "delete contents." Everything inside the sandbox is erased, no reboot required.

Sandboxie also allows you to "recover" files that are sandboxed. So say you download a file in your sandboxed web browser, Sandboxie will give you the option of copying the file out of the sandbox.

Sandbox contents also stay there until manual erasure, even after a reboot. This can be a good thing, as you can test software over a period of time within the sandbox. However, since the erasure isn't automatic, if a piece of malware infects the sandbox, it stays in there until you remember to clear the sandbox, making protection a bit less "automatic" than hard drive virtualizers like Power Shadow.

Sandboxie doesn't support driver installs, so any program that installs a driver can't be installed withing Sandboxie, while they may be able to be installed with a hard drive virtualizer activated.

There is a freeware version of Sandboxie available on the publishers site if you want to try it out.
#
Jan 15 2009 12:20pm
Website Visitor Jay G. Says:

Some additional notes:

Since with Sandboxie you're going to be running a mix of sandboxed and non-sandboxed programs at once, Sandboxie adds
  • brackets to the titles of windows running sandboxed. For example, a sandboxed Firefox will show at the top of it's window the title:
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • .

Also, you have to explicitly run programs within Sandboxie in order for them to be sandboxed. To do this, you either start them from within Sandboxie Control, or right-click on the program and select "run sandboxed". Programs installed inside Sandboxie can only be run sandboxed. The personal license offered here allows you to force certain programs to always run sandboxed, even if you don't do the steps above and try to run it like normal.

Finally, you can create multiple sandboxes in Sandboxie and run different applications in each. For example, you can run your web browser in one, then install a program into its own sandbox. That way you can erase one sandbox without affecting the program in the other sandbox. The freeware version limits you to only using one sandbox at a time, but the personal license lets you use as multiple sandboxes at once."

14  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: UltraRecall discounted on BitsDuJour.com today (2009-10-07) on: October 07, 2009, 09:45:23 AM
have you had a look at the comparison page -
I dont use UR myself but it looks to me like the Pro version has a lot of worthwhile advantages.
Thanks, I have looked at this comparison, but I find it hard to translate into real situations, for many items (like "hoisting").  Even regarding Search capabilities, it's not obvious to see if it's a major difference.  Actually I was hoping that someone from DC is already using either version and could comment on this.

From the Help file :

Ultra Recall supports hoisting of the Data Explorer pane to temporarily limit the tree display tree to a subset of the entire tree hierarchy in the database.  The tree can also be unhoisted to show the entire tree again.  Any item except the root My Data item can be hoisted.

Hoisting and unhoisting are accessed via the Tree menu, toolbar, or keyboard shortcuts.  To hoist, choose Tree | Hoist on the menu.  If the root item of the tree is not the My Data item (house icon), the tree is hoisted.  Use Tree | Unhoist on the menu bar to show the entire tree, or use Go | Up On Level to unhoist one level.  If an item outside of the hoisted tree is navigated to, the tree will be unhoisted automatically.

Each tab can be hoisted to a different location, and hoists are persisted between sessions.

An option is also available to automatically hoist a Favorite when opening it.

Note: Available in Professional edition only.

I bought Ultra Recall Pro long time ago when it was discounted at BitsDujour  It is indeed a powerful program. But I hate to say that I only use a rather small subset of its features. It is not the program's fault; just that I have not invested the time to exploit it. Like owning a Ferrari and driving it only to the supermart.

So other than say that it is a powerful program, I cannot comment much further. You may want to have a look at the user forums to get an idea of what people use it for.

For US$20 bucks extra, I say skip the 3 or 4 Starbucks coffee and get the pro. There are some rather helpful powerusers at the user forum you can get help from.

Maybe reading this might help with the decision:

15  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Windows Live Messenger Login Woes when waking up from standby on: October 04, 2009, 11:27:51 AM
Ever since I was forced to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger version 2009 recently by none other than Microsoft, I have been having login woes when the laptop wakes up from standby.

What happens, is that sometimes when I wake up from standby, before my computer successfully connects to the wireless network, Windows Live Messenger is attempting to login and after a while it struggles along trying to login even though the the laptop has already connected to the wireless network. And after several attempts I get this error message :

We can't sign you in to Windows Live Messenger

Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

I find that the only way for me to solve the problem is to kill Windows Live Messenger and then restart it again and then, it will login fairly quickly.

I have noticed that I don't experience such issues with Skype or Yahoo messenger which logins without fail very quickly when the laptop wakes up from standby.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and solved it ?
16  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Someone MUST make a new PowerMarks program. on: September 20, 2009, 12:41:54 PM
Superboyac, I'm am also a long time user of Powermarks and ever since switching to Firefox 3, I have been looking for a way to overcome what we long time users of Powermarks are facing.

I've look long and hard and I thought I had found a solution with combination of TagSifter and HandyTag

TagSifter
"Firefox 3 lets you tag your bookmarks, but it doesn't give you a great way to browse your bookmarks by their tags. TagSifter tries to. Select a group of tags in the sidebar or menu, and TagSifter shows you all the related tags and bookmarks. Or search your bookmarks with set operators, like "tag1 - (tag2 + !tag3)". Comes with a tool to help tag your existing bookmarks as you move to Firefox 3."
https://addons.mozilla.or...h?q=tagsifter&cat=all

Handytag
Search Add-ons :: Firefox Add-ons
"HandyTag simply providing a complete set of most relevant keywords in the bookmark's edition panel. These keywords are retrieved from many different sources."
https://addons.mozilla.or...ch?q=handytag&cat=all

BUT, I keep thinking that a lot of the convenience I was experiencing with Powermarks was still missing.

Besides, I have not figured out how to backup all these Tags I'm entering into Firefox.

But guess what, I think I have hit upon a solution - with just a couple of small steps missing.

This is what I'm doing :

You will need to have a few things to accomplish this.

1. Powermarks
2. Firefox 3
3. Turnon Global HotKeys - enable you to hit the hot key to bring Powermarks to the foreground
Make sure you assign an unused key combination to     "Add Bookmark from Clipboard" such as Alt+Shift+P

Chapter 8 - Powermarks User Guide
"    8.1.7 Hotkeys

    Switch to Powermarks
        Display the Powermarks window
    Add Bookmark to Browser
Add the current browser URL to the Powermarks bookmark list and allow for editing.
    Fast Add Bookmark from Browser
Adds the URL currently in the Browser to the Powermarks bookmark list.
    Add Bookmark from Clipboard
Searches the clipboard for a URL and adds it the Powermarks bookmark list. Powermarks will attempt to contact the site and retrieve the name, keywords and description of the new bookmark. "
http://www.kaylon.com/hel.../chapter_8.htm#SystemTray

4. Chapter 8 - Powermarks User Guide
"8.1.12 Browsers"
http://www.kaylon.com/help/chapter_8.htm#browsers

If you look at your actual Option Screen in your Powermarks program, you will see an additional line item - Firefox which is not shown in the online Powermarks User Guide.

Make sure you tell Powermarks where to find Firefox 3.

Your are almost all set for a test run now.

5. Using Firefox, do you usual surfing on the web.

Let's say you are at

https://addons.mozilla.or...ch?q=handytag&cat=all

And you want this url plus whatever keywords to be captured in Powermarks.

(Note: Do make sure Powermarks is loaded and it could also be minimized in the backgroud)

a. Press Crtl+L - this highlights the URL bar in Firefox 3 (Note that Alt+D also works in same way)
b. Press Crtl+C - this places https://addons.mozilla.or...ch?q=handytag&cat=all into the clipboard.
c. Press Shift+Alt+P - this executes "Add Bookmark from Clipboard" which you configured in Step 3 above such as Alt+Shift+P

Step 5c tells Powermarks to store retrieve https://addons.mozilla.or...ch?q=handytag&cat=all into the database together with the associated keywords.
And all this time, Powermarks remain in the background until you invoke it with say Crtl+Alt+P Hotkey you assigned (See 8.1.7 Hotkeys  in Chapter 8 - Powermarks User Guide)

Presto - you are done - back in business with Powermarks. Clicking on a url in Powermarks would launch the url in a new tab (if you set the options correctly) in Firefox (if it had been set as the default browser.)

Now of course Steps 5.a, 5.b and 5.c can all be combined as a single command if someone can write a Autohotkey script and compile it into and exe and attach it to a Button on Firefox - This part I have not figured out as yet - but it certainly can be done. Once the script has been written and compiled, it could possibly be launched by
"Launch External Windows Applications Directly From Firefox
http://www.inspiredgeek.c...ns-directly-from-firefox/

But take note that "Launch External Windows Applications Directly From Firefox" does not seem to operate properly with Firefox 3. [See How to add a Button (to execute a AutoHotkey script or an exe) to Firefox 3 - DonationCoder.com
"I would like to execute a particular command from within Firefox 3.
This could be calling a AutoHotkey script or the same script compiled into a DoThis.exe"]
http://www.donationcoder....m/index.php?topic=14850.0

Perhaps someone with Greasemonkey script (if that is the thing to use) could figure this out.

Take note that "Alt+Ins Add URL from clipboard" does not quite work - It would have completed the picture for people like us.
Chapter 10 - Powermarks User Guide
"Alt+Ins    Add URL from clipboard"
http://www.kaylon.com/hel...apter_10.htm#ShortcutKeys

Do tell me what do you think - no more worries that Firefox 4, 5, or 6 would break it !!!

Yes no doubt it is not as convenient right now, but it works !!!

Anyone would like to craft a Autohotkey script for us poor Powermarkers and figure out how to use "Launch External Windows Applications Directly From Firefox"

I mentioned a while back that the ""Launch External Windows Applications Directly From Firefox" does not seem to operate properly with Firefox 3."

Well, I just discovered that the Firefox Add-On extension IE Tab has an option that allows you to launch an External Application.

It works when you Crtl+Click the IE Tab BUTTON.

This could be used to launch a compiled Autohotkey script such as the one written by Twinkler.

So this could be THE solution for the clickable button solution that I was looking for.

When I can find sometime to work this out, I'll post again.

But of course whoever wants to beat me to this is most welcomed.

I suspect there may be other Add-ons that has a hidden option to launch an external program that we are not aware of.

That it happened to be part of the IE Tab Add-on is just a conincidence.

Just in case anyone is interested External Application Button works

"External Application Buttons mod for Firefox 3.0+ 0.8.0.10 "
https://addons.mozilla.or...en-US/firefox/addon/12892

That is, you can compile a AutoHotkey script that calls up Powermarks and send the appropriate command to copy the url into the Powermarks Dialog etc. to make it function like the good old days of Powermarks when it worked with Firefox.

I continue to use Powermarks successfully with Firefox even without using External Application Buttons as documented in this thread.

18  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Remove duplicate files, folders and archives - DupeTrasher 2009 on: September 19, 2009, 02:48:11 AM

patteo, right now DupeTrasher doesn't have any command line features but I can implement that for the future version. What exactly would you like to have with this command line support? I haven't checked that feature in other duplicate scanners (will do that as soon as I get some time) so your feedback would be helpful as the starting point.

Directory Opus is able to launch other programs (from a User Define button) and at the same time send it commandline parameters:

For example : the following Commandline command can be assigned to a button.
C:\Program Files\Double Killer Pro\doublekiller -clearfolders -addfolder "{sourcepath}" -addfolder "{destpath}" -addfolder "D:\updated files" lib -page 3

Directory Opus is an incredibly powerful Dual pane file manager which many use to manage their files.

So in the example above, instead of separately launching Double Killer Pro or for that matter any other programs like Beyond Compare, and then navigating these programs to the source and destination paths (that I'm currently at in Directory Opus), Double Killer Pro is launched (with a Directory Opus User Button) with the correct source and destination paths and the duplicate files searching process begins immediately.

It is an incredible time saver.

And integrating the two, ie Directory Opus and Double Killer Pro makes them a killer pair, likewise, Directory Opus and Beyond Compare also makes another killer pair.

The integration is seamless via the commandline commands provided by Double Killer Pro and Beyond Compare.

You can really appreciate the huge time saving benefits only if you invest the time in this area and it does not take a lot of user time once programs like Double Killer Pro and Beyond Compare provide the facility for accepting commandline commands.

I have several buttons in Directory Opus configured to link these programs.

hi all,

i used to have an old copy of Print Shop Deluxe which i enjoyed very much. however, i'm having some problems with the new printer i bought recently so had a look at the newer version but didn't feel like spending so much...

therefore, i was wondering if there is a light-weight alternative to Print Shop Deluxe? I am open to suggestions... preferably, the app should be targeted at a medium to casual user with not too much hand-holding. Wink

I have a similar problem - I have Printshop Premier Deluxe V5.

But for some unknown reason, it takes forever to print some pictures. So I'm also looking for an alternative to Print Shop, preferably a freeware software.

Some wizards would be nice of course.

I was listening to an audio stream and depending on the internet connection, it can be a bit staccato and listening to the entire message can take much longer than it really is.

I remembered that I was able to record somehow download the streaming audio, but I just cannot remember how I did it previously, perhaps through some Firefox extension ?

Does anyone know how I can do this ?

A freeware method is preferred.

I was quite sure that the last time I recorded, it was downloaded or recorded in mp3.

Thanks
25  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Automated Selective Select from cursor to a particular word on: September 04, 2009, 01:40:23 AM
Lately, I have wanted to capture some webpages from the Cursor position to a particular word.

For example, the webpage may begin with the Subject and it always ends Have fun (see sample below).

There are other things like a box to post comments at the bottom or a list of Recent Posts etc which I'm not interested in.

I find that I can use the simple click and drag to select which I then save to a tool like Evernote or Surfulater or Ultra Recall.

But it is the click, drag, select which I find tedious because it is a rather imprecise process, as one tend to overshoot when the webpage is long or you undershoot. So this tediousness becomes worse if there are several pages to go through.

So it would be nice if there is some utility that can select from Cursor to a particular predefined word.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
