1  News and Reviews / Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Google Reader - Mini-Review on: March 16, 2013, 12:14:35 PM
I don't really care about losing Google Reader the app.

What I care about is losing Google Reader the cloud service, so when I read an article in Feedly on my PC, it gets marked as read in Beyondpod on my phone.

Easy solution is to use Keepass, create a unique password for each site, then just hit CTRL-ALT-A to automatically type the username and password into each site.

My mother has a different maiden name on each site I have a login  smiley

You have a favourite password?  ohmy

I hope no site you use ever gets hacked.

The free version of Winpatrol lets you delay startup applications.

What's wrong with just setting up a mapped network drive that points deep enough down into the folder structure?

Use meaningless symbols for your navigation, and make them try to jump out of the way of your mouse when you hover near them.
7  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: More YouTube Censorship on: April 11, 2012, 02:09:20 PM
From what I read about her she's a nut job (and she looks the part).  Considering she makes her views public, any opposing views shouldn't be Censored, even if it is satirical or mean.  That's the price you pay for going public, you are a public figure....
Would it make a difference if she didn't look like 'a nut job'?

What does the course tutor say? They may be prepared to share the source documents.
9  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: BBC - inspiration? on: September 21, 2011, 12:49:37 PM
It's amazing how they redeveloped a new look for the BBC in just a week since Win8.
Yes, anyone would think that design had been knocking around for at least a year before Win 8 got previewed  Wink

Hell in the UK children have to be taught about 'citizenship' in schools - it is now a compulsory subject - but NO ONE in the UK is a CITIZEN - we are all SUBJECTS of the crown (if you are from the UK and don't believe me look in your Passport). Citizenship classes in schools should consist of a one line statement on day one of school "there is no such thing as a UK citizen"! There done, now lets get on with speaking the Queen's English.
This is an urban myth Carol. I don't know what's in your passport, but mine says I'm a British Citizen.
11  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Movies I Love to Listen To: Dialects and Accents on: May 19, 2011, 02:56:33 PM
British accents so interesting, the English sound track had to have English subtitles:

Snatch

Unfortunately a lot of violence but off-beat funny.

Or you can watch the same movie here in just a minute and 40 seconds  cheesy

It's hitting a low point.  Now when I try to Send an email from hotmail, it wants me to identify a Captcha!! And I'm already logged into the thing!

Why don't we just have thumb print and get it over with instead of this annoying crap?

Do a retinal eye scan. Just don't ask to me guess what some garbled crap spells!

Ah, so that's why Outlook's stopped picking up my hotmail smiley

3½ years ago I was searching for a video decompiler, picture extractor, and found one at http://www.softwareclub.ws/ The site is still as it was then, nothing has changed. Terrible muzak, unless maybe if you are a (censored for the sake of world peace).

scroll down and click the microscopic "sound on/off" - it will always be on when you enter:

(see attachment in previous post)

And it'll turn itself back on as you navigate through the site. Dismal.

Dragon's Den is an 'entrepreneur pitches idea to smug investors' type show.

Cassetteboy is a mashup artist ..

... and I can't figure out how to embed a youtube video, so here's the link instead
18  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: What's a good way to embed video/audio in a pdf-like transferable document? on: October 04, 2010, 03:27:16 PM
pdf with embedded flash, or as a regular html page saved as .mht

Sorry, but the first one just looked awkward to me.  Sad

It took me a few seconds to realise it was the serif typeface someone had used to add one of the labels  ohmy

Have a listen to Manuel Göttsching's E2-E4 from about 1980ish.

Not only is it a great house record from 5 years before anyone had invented house, not only did it form the basis of the Balearic Beat sound a decade later, not only did act as midwife for sampletastic stuff like Sueno Latino, but most importantly of all: if I start it playing it as I get on the train to work, it'll just be finishing an hour later as we slow down on the final approach into Victoria - perfect smiley
21  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Word 2007: Are Table Styles safe to use now? on: June 05, 2010, 04:51:35 PM
AndyM... going back to your advice on using tabs instead of tables.  How would one format text so each "cell" could have multiline text in it?  I dont see how tabs allow you to do this.
By using the correct tool - a table Wink
22  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Word 2007: Are Table Styles safe to use now? on: May 26, 2010, 01:23:43 PM
Never noticed any issues with either table styles or tables themselves in any version going from 2000 to 2010 (including 2007).

And I'm intrigued to know how you'd use autotext to simulate a table style too Wink
23  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Instruction manual creation recommendations? on: May 11, 2010, 01:45:47 PM
Create the styles in a blank document first, then go to the outliner and create the content there. Either type or bring in using Paste/Special/Unformatted text.

Keep formatting and content creation completely separate.
24  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Powerpoint sucks - what to use instead? on: April 21, 2010, 02:11:08 PM
I'd be surprised if you can find something that addresses your first point.

Far better to give your teachers the skills to create strong, engaging designs without losing Powerpoint's flexibility.

I'd suggest Death By Powerpoint for a good presentation specific introduction, and Robin Williams' The Non-Designer's Design Book for general design skills.

For the second point, have a look at Adobe Captivate or Articulate - Flash based elearning authoring tools.

Though why your teachers think their students will learn by watching an instructor run through a slideshow, no matter what authoring package they used, is beyond me. It's not the 1950s any more Wink

If you want a quick and dirty solution, then just remove the formatting. Completely. 18 point Times Roman black on white background might be the dullest design ever, but at least the design won't distract from the content.

Please, I don't want to know how bad the content is Wink
25  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Dell: No refunds for Linux users who reject Microsoft's OS EULA on: March 23, 2010, 05:26:04 PM
I don't understand how Dell are responsible for the refund. It's MS's EULA, not theirs.

Unless Dell have separately agreed to underwrite the cost of the returns with MS.

The EULA explicitly says "return it to the retailer". Dell sold the copy of Windows why should MS reimburse you directly? If they did then Dell would keep the money they received for the sale and MS would cough up the refund - that would not make any sense.
MS Should be the ones reimbursing because it's MS giving the purchaser the right to return the software under MS's own EULA. You can't force a liability on a third party just by telling people to ask them for money smiley

Dell's contract with the purchaser is 'Give us some money, we'll give you this computer with W7 on it'. Dell would only be responsible if they'd got an agreement with MS to underwrite these returns. Which on reflection they probably have. In which case I've answered my own question and really ought to stop typing now  embarassed
