The promotion is active and running, for those interested.
2  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Backup4All Professional - Bits Du Jour - 6-29-22009 on: June 23, 2009, 06:30:39 AM
Upgrading from v3 to v4 (professional) is $20 so still cheaper than buying a new discounted license via bdj (but a good deal for new users).
Anyway, in about one month we'll release version 4.2 which will be a free upgrade for 4.x owners (including those that purchase via bdj), the main change in this new version being the fact that Backup4all is unicode.
3  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Backup4All Lite ... 4 Free on: May 21, 2009, 08:58:06 AM
We will make an integration with S3 (amazon), but a "cloud backup" solution it's not something we're considering for now.

As for your other question, we're based in Cluj-Napoca, they're in Oradea so we're not that close anyway - so no encounters. However, if you're looking for connections with known programs, we had as our colleague the developer of Total Uninstall (it's quite a popular program in its niche) - a loss for us when he left, a gain for its customers.
4  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Backup4All Lite ... 4 Free on: May 19, 2009, 02:47:44 AM
Backup4All is nice stuff, I have a license, probably on a Bits Du Jour special, and the release lasts a long time.  A support and discussion forum would be a major help, in the style of Syncback and Genie.
We hope that in about 2 months we'll have a new website in place and also a discussion forum. Right now we're still testing the impact of a forum for our freeware, FBackup ( http://www.fbackup.com/ ), but most likely the forum will be added on Backup4all too.

Just be sure you browse through the sponsors to get the offer you have to pay less for. That list is a bit old, I think this one has most of the trialpay programs (says 400) - http://goodle.crmreports....ed-400-with-trialpay.html
6  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Backup4all 4 BETA released on: September 30, 2008, 03:03:54 AM
I bought Backup4All in late July of this year.   Would I qualify for a free update?
Inputted the key into the upgrade form on the site but it said it would cost $19.98.
Hi,
Yes you do qualify, please send an email to sales[at]backup4all[dot]com with your registration name/email and key. They will send you back a new key. We're going to send an email to all users that qualify for a free upgrade, but this way you can obtain it faster. Thank you.
7  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Backup4all 4 BETA released on: September 25, 2008, 08:12:26 AM
Is this a free or paid upgrade for 3.x users, please? (The upgrade page on your site says to visit tomorrow, the same it said yesterday smiley Naturally, I wouldn't like my registered version to revert to a 30-day trial.)
We're working on the update system and it will be available in about 1 hour. However the upgrade from previous versions is not free, unless you bought it in the last three months (it seems you have it registered since 2 years ago).

As for the suggestions, please send them to support[at]backup4all[dot]com.

Also, if you have Backup4all 3 registered and installed on your computer, when you download and install Backup4all 4 that one will be installed separately. So you can still have Backup4all 3 running and registered, while testing Backup4all 4 (30-day trial available). However, please note that if you import your backup jobs from Backup4all 3 to Backup4all 4, you won't be able to use them again in Backup4all 3.

9  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: OCR/Text Recognition in a .pdf document? How do I do this. on: September 01, 2008, 01:54:15 AM
NovaPDF's editing capabilities (or lack thereof). Hope this is added in the future - it's a great feature!
We know it's a great feature, if only it wouldn't be that difficult to implement.
10  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: OCR/Text Recognition in a .pdf document? How do I do this. on: September 01, 2008, 01:15:15 AM
BTW, Curt, I notice that NovaPDF (all flavours) is on sale at the moment. Will it handle this as well (ie allow you to save a pdf created as an archive of image files as a searchable pdf)?
novaPDF cannot save an image as a searchable pdf because it's a pdf printer driver without pdf editing capabilities (a goal on the long run though). To do this you would have to perform OCR with a different program and after that convert the recognized text to a pdf with searchable text.

I wonder if NovaPDF will do this (process/change existing pdfs) printing an existing pdf from a pdf reader...?
novaPDF can create a PDF from a pdf reader (you open the pdf in foxit/adobe and hit print, select novapdf and save the pdf), however it cannot change existing pdfs (no editing capabilities).

Darwin, your question caused a minor panic around here, because I couldn't remember that novaPdf comes from the company Softland (also the maker of Backup4All), so I couldn't find the (censored) folder... So finally I went to Revo_Uninstaller to ask, and realized that I actually have two (almost) identical programs
Softland publishes both Backup4all and novaPDF (and dopdf). We also sell developer tools for creating/handling pdf, so as I see you have installed yourself novaPDF (as a separate pdf driver) but also purchased another program that uses our licensed technology. No need to panic, they both are well behaved and don't interact with each other (though randomly in our tests a 3rd smaller pdf printer sometimes appeared from nowhere smiley ).
11  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ideal backup utility on: August 25, 2008, 05:23:13 AM
in an "ideal" backup
it sounds to me like #2 the way it was described
-
in an "ideal" backup programme It would be great to be able to simply Control+DragDrop to create a copy of a backup.
Indeed #2 is what I meant. In Backup4all you can select a backup job, press Ctrl+L (this will create a duplicate of the existing backup job) and then drag-drop it into a different group (only in version 4 in the Tree view). Thanks tomos for the suggestion of the Ctrl+drag/drop, this will be added in the next beta update since it's easy to implement and seems an useful way of duplicating backup jobs across other groups.

If a job to be shared is complex, repeating the same definition in many groups is a waste of time and future change/remove of such job will become very difficult, because any change will have to be repeated in all the N groups and that is provided one can still remember exactly what are the groups that need to be changed.
I'll suggest this to our developers, but I don't see how useful would it be to have the exact backup job in two different groups and have them both sharing the same centralized settings. If that source is important and want to be sure it gets backed up, you can set up a scheduler for it.

If Backup4All strictly requires one to create plugin first in order to backup selective registry key(s), then that is too bad. I don't even agree with any claim that it supports registry key(s) backup. I can easily quote you an example which also sounds like a trick or workaround than a real support of such feature:
It can back up registry keys only if these are part of a created plugin, we don't claim on the site that Backup4all backs up and restores registry keys. This will be a feature in another version when we'll restructure the way the Sources are used (so that registry keys, ftp sources, email sources, ... could be added) and figure out a way to make this secure for regular users too. The registry backup feature has lower priority compared with other features we want to implement, because other than using it for backing up applications (which can be done with plugins too) it doesn't have much applicability.

Backup4all does not meet your requirements (at least for now). I'm sure we'll get there but it takes some time, mainly because it's a matter of priorities rather than willingness. The focus of this new version has been to improve handling large amounts of data, and it's a thing we've been working for quite a while now (with the final version it should work just fine to back up millions of files without having Backup4all crash, which I cannot say about many of our competitors - at least based on our tests, details to be included in the final version).

Are we talking about backing up the whole registry or just selective key(s)?

I was talking about the whole registry. Backup4all can already back up selective key(s) as part of the plugin system. So if you define a backup plugin for application A, you can add registry keys for that application and they will be restored when you perform a restore (there's already a list of plugins created for several applications http://www.backup4all.com/kb/15/, and there's a tutorial on creating a plugin here http://www.backup4all.com...-a-backup-plugin-161.html).

Quote from: tslim
Btw, I do not create a gigantic job to backup several applications or EVERYTHING. I create job on per application basic and then group them. e.g. I could group A, B, C and D in a group called "daily backup" simply because they change a lot of data everyday. And I could have another group named "Graphic utilities" where it contains A, X, Y and Z applications. Note that A is also present here in this group because it is a graphic utility. So whichever group I run the backup, the A's sources are backup to the same target as defined in job A.

I am sorry I can no more remember the group feature in Backup4All in detail. I know it has tree-like presentation of jobs, but are the grouping a real grouping where groups can share a single job?
You can have the same backup job in several backup groups, as long as you have a different name for the backup job (but it can have the same sources and destination). So your scenario works with Backup4all, and as mentioned above if you create a backup plugin for an application you can select its registry keys to be backed up too.

How nice it will be if Backup4All supports unicode and registry keys backup or I were the interface designer of Genie Backup Pro...<sigh>!
We hope to have Backup4all 4.1 fully Unicode (we're depending on a 3rd party, so it might be sooner). Regarding the registry backup, Backup4all has the ability to do that but we haven't made this public because we consider this a rather dangerous thing if it's not used by powerusers. I mean you do a backup now of your registry, and if you forget to set it as incremental or to do subsequent backups and want to do a restore 2 months from now, your system will be messed up because there were changes in this time. If we find a way to make this safe, we'll add the registry backup feature too. Right now Backup4all can back up registry entries as part of the XML plugins system.

15  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Versioning of files on: October 09, 2007, 02:39:17 AM
Few details about Backup4all:
- file versioning means that different versions of the same file will be stored as long as you keep the backups; an example, say you schedule a daily incremental backup for a folder where you have a word document - first day it will do a full backup, second day if your word document was changed it will be copied and added to the 2nd backup (a zip file), 3rd day the word document willl be copied again (if it changed) and so on... all the versions of the word document are kept in different backups, so say you changed it daily you'll have at the end of a week 7 different versions of the word document stored in 7 different zip file (i'm assuming now you wouldn't use any split/merge or advanced options)

- to restore a version of a file (can be to the original location or a different location) in the explore view of Backup4all you select the backed up file and in the lower part of the main window you'll see different versions listed - http://www.backup4all.com...p/product_description.htm this image shows that for the selected file (backup4all-lite.png in this case) there are about 13 different versions listed in the window below it (file version window); additionally, the restore can be done using the restore wizard, in case for instance you want to automatically filter which versions are shown,... - http://www.backup4all.com...help/restore_versions.htm

- as for the plugins, they should appear now in the search results, normally the best search results for the knowledgebase are obtained when using its own search engine http://www.backup4all.com/kb/search/

Hope this helps a little. If not, you can always ask our support guys (support [at] backup4all.com) specific backup scenario questions.

17  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: doPDF (pdf creator) - Freeware on: April 13, 2007, 04:36:29 AM
hi there Softland, been trying out doPDF as an alternative PDF creator and i'm surprised that doPDf creates smaller & searchable PDFs.. smiley

however i'm having some problems that i would like to highlight..
• 1st, after saving and the file is displayed, the extension goes missing. this happens despite typing-in the ".pdf" at the save dialog.
• 2nd, if the typed filename contains a dot or hyphen, the filename gets cut-off. e.g. "my.work.2006.pdf" is saved as on "my".
• 3rd, at the save dialog if i type-in the name of an existing file, doPDF promptly overwrites the file without any warning!

i hope you will look into this in your future releases. i also would like to suggest that make doPDF be able to remember the last saved folder, instead of prompting to save into "My Documents" each time.. smiley

1 - is a bug we are aware about, will be fixed in vs 5.1
2 - same bug as 1
3 -  bug, will be fixed
in vs 5.1 the last save location will be remembered. Don't know exactly the release date but it will not be too long.
18  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Backup4all for U3 on: March 21, 2007, 02:39:05 AM
yes, it does that.
But it is really slow. And bk4all it's the single application that I have seen going over 300mb of memory usage.
This happened because you had a lot of files and a lot of file versions for those files - recommendation is such cases would be to use the "Limit maximum number of stored backups to" or "Merge stored backup to maintain the maximum limit" options. Thing is that all the information regarding files and file versions is stored in the backup catalog (.bkc) and that's loaded in the memory, and if you have lots of files and file versions the size of bkc increases.

Anyway, this is also one optimization that will be included in version 4, just as a side note we've redesigned the catalog and doing tests with over 1 million files (and keeping file versions) while maintaining acceptable usage of cpu/memory.

P.S. Why would should you let all the memory to be used by Vista only  Wink

Will do so ASAP, that is as soon I have access to the PC where it is installed and where I have observed it, basically next week.  Just a precision also : I am using FoxReader as pdf reader.
Hi. No need to send that file, seems this is a bug in Foxit. Adobe reader gets the correct information, while Foxit doesn't. I'll send them an email about this. Thanks for pointing it.
[update] Seems they already know about this bug http://www.foxitsoftware..../bbs/showthread.php?t=845

On my system, doPDF works fine.  The only glitch I found is when one look at the properties of the pdf file created by doPDF, the main fields are filled with strange characters, whereas one would have expected some info about Softland.
Can you post a screenshot? I have attached one and there are no strange characters.

We've recently released a freeware pdf creator called doPDF (http://www.dopdf.com). Has pretty basic features but it's one of the few pdf creators that doesn't use Ghostscript and that runs on Vista.

Quote
doPDF allows you to freely convert documents to PDF files, including emails, MS Office documents, web pages, text. It works as a printer driver and you can convert to PDF from any Windows application that supports printing - just set doPDF as the default printer and the document will be converted and saved as PDF file. Features include: customizable resolution, predefined page size, quality settings and much more.
