It's not exactly what I wanted, but it's closer than anything else I saw.

Maybe I'm using it wrong, but Minki seems pretty technically complicated.  Am I supposed to have to edit using the wiki-code?  That was the problem I had the last time I used a wiki.  People wouldn't format their posts, or they'd format them differently, and it would be hard to look at the site and instantly know what was new, and where the separate ideas were.

Also, a wiki would seem to be a good fit, but I've tried before, and the housekeeping for messy edits becomes a hassle, and everything breaks down.  Also, each person formats their entries slightly differently, which makes it hard to scan.

Another thing:

Besigner.com looks like a regular blog with multiple people being able to access it. Why not sign up for a Blogger account and set permissions for your friends to all be able to post to it? Again this doesn't include threading, but it will give you pretty much everything you see as Besign.com

It's like a blog, but for one difference, which is what makes it perfect for me: the latest post sorts everything to the top.  This would be like Blogger bumping a blog post to the top again every time someone comments.

Google groups is better than I remember it being, but still a bit of a hassle to just invite people to on a whim.

I want real bare-bones design and feature set.  It's basically a guestbook with some threading capabilities, that sorts newest threads/posts to the top.

I want to work on some art projects with friends as ideas occur to us, and we need a forum or something with instant access to posting, and a decent way of organizing it.  Also, it shouldn't need a lot of permissions to post, as little a threshold to get to writing our thoughts down as possible.  Any ideas?  I'd use the besigner engine, but the author seems very hard to reach (no replies to my emails)

Software I could not live without:

FARR : I find myself trying to bring it up on other peoples computers and forgetting that it's not part of windows.

Notepad++ : Very fast, very integrated, very powerful.  Haven't touched notepad or wordpad in months.

UltraVNC : lots of features, free, maintained regularly

Ableton Live : makes music production a hell of a lot of fun. 

Audacity : FREE! great for quick audio projects when I don't feel like using the massive, messy ProTools

Firefox : haven't used IE in years, don't think I ever will again.

IZarc : I've yet to find a better-made archive tool.

VLC Media Player : ugly, but extremely powerful and reliable

MAX/MSP : I hate coding, but somehow, even though this it's basically coding, I enjoy dragging lines around to boxes.  Makes it more like a logic puzzle, and a game, rather than a chore.  Mostly used for art installations, or other media-related coding needs.

What I was suggesting was that ShortcutMaker makes it much easier to find the folders you want to use, and that possibly by checking a box, it could create something like the batch file you're talking about after it is done using the folders that were selected. That ould makeit very easy to sync the same folders in the future, without running ShortcutMaker and choosing everything again.

If only the two could meet.  ShortcutMaker is friendlier, and saves me the trouble of finding/typing long paths, and Shortcut Sync syncs so quickly and neatly with no clutter. 

Is there an easy way to run ShortcutMaker, and hit a checkbox "sync" so that when ShortcutMaker is done, it makes a shortcut to ShortcutSync on my desktop that will sync the folders that I chose in ShortcutMaker at any later date?

Just happy to see all the functionality/usability I was looking for, but trying to figure out how to use the benefits of both apps.

Worked perfectly, and amazingly fast.  I did 27,000 files in the time it took for me to go microwave some popcorn.

At this point, FARR is up and running as my music searching app, and syncing would be an added, and quite awesome, bonus.

The .exe compiled on my machine worked.

One thing I noticed is that the "drag and drop" feature doesn't seem to do what it says, unless I misread it.  It seems to make a single shortcut to whatever is dropped onto it, and not in the destination directory, but the directory that Shortcut maker is in.

The .ahk worked great.  I'll try compiling it and see if that works as well.  So subfolders and syncing are the only things left out of what I would suggest.

As I said, I've never used AHK before, but if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

can't think of anything else that would be relevant.  I'm just looking at AHK in person for the first time now.  I'll let you know if the script works on my machine.

also, one thing I was hoping would be possible is to recreate the folder/subfolder structure.  That would also solve the duplicate filenames issue if it's possible.

In case you want to know, my subfolders are all 4 or less levels deep.

I'm having trouble running any of the exe's.  Are there any required libraries or anything?  I don't have ahk installed, I'll try that now.

The first exe says "memory allocation error, system halted."

Just to clarify, I want it this way so that I can still use FARR, so it doesn't help to use other indexing search apps that create their own databases, and I'd like it to sync so I can add mp3s to my server, and automatically have a shortcut to them without having to keep track of new files myself.

I have all of my mp3s on a server, and I have tried to have FARR search for my mp3s, but the fact that it's on a not-cutting-edge wireless network means that the search is a bit slow as it works its way through the files.  (There's a lot of them). 

What I'd like to do is sync folders (I realize there are tons of apps that do this),
BUT only sync the files as SHORTCUTS.  That way, when I'm looking for a song (or any file) that's elsewhere, I can find it in shortcut form locally, and deal with the network after the fact.

I know there might be apps that do this already, but a quick look around didn't turn any up.

Another vote for FARR v2 being next; I'm very excited.  But folder searching is the biggest thing I'm waiting for if that could be easily implemented before a major update.  FARR is the most essential app to install on any computer I work on now.  Don't know how I got on without it.

Because some of us actually know what we're doing, and want to share with people who aren't able to afford internet, or just want to google something on their pocketpc as they're walking by.

I have heard rumors of freaky distances connecting to wireless lans... like 3-5 miles connecting to a University hub. Anybody heard of that?

I think the record, unpowered, is something insane like 70 miles.  Realistically, 5 miles or less should work without a hitch provided you have good line of sight.  I set up streaming video for a surveillance station, streaming 16 video cameras 24/7, all the way accross a small city.  The station was on a hill, and the buildings they were watching had roofs visible from the hill.  We used some small antennas to insure a stable connection, but it was pretty stable with 2 off-the-shelf access points.

I actually went back to the prgram I referenced earlier, TaskbarActivate, and figured out a way to make it do basically what I want.  I didn't realize at first that if you click during the delay, it opens the taskbar.  I set the delay as high as it would go, and now I have to hit the side of the screen, and click in order to make it open.  good enough for my needs.

Maximize doesn't seem to work with FadingTaskbar.  I have to be in windowed mode, and manually resize the window to fill the screen.  Clicking maximize with FadingTaskbar only maximizes up to the point where the taskbar would be, leaving a blank space at the bottom of the screen; Whereas with normal windows autohide, apps wouldn't maximize on first run only, and I'd have to click maximize once it was started to get it to fill the screen.

I also can't seem to understand the activation rectangle.  I got it to sort of do what I wanted, but I'm confused as to what value does what.  Any chance you could describe how to use them?

Honestly, I just don't like it there. Although it would probably be less problematic, it's not an intuitive place for me, and it would still occasionally run into the same problems.

The behavior I was trying to explain is that even though the taskbar is hidden off-screen, windows that are supposed to open full-screen leave a blank space for the taskbar as if it was there.

Unless it's something undocumented about FadingTaskbar, I don't think it does what I'm talking about.  I want the taskbar to be autohidden except when a very small area of it is moused-over, as opposed to an entire side of the monitor.  This is using the autohide setting in windows, where the taskbar is just off screen, allowing programs to be opened to the full size of the monitor, while still allowing you to get to the taskbar by moving the mouse along the edge of the screen where the taskbar is.

This does something to make it less of a pain, but not exactly what I'm looking for.  I don't like the time delay thing, because it makes me wait for access to the taskbar, and if I'm trying to get to it, it's probably something I want to do quick.  I'd rather have a limited area of activation.  Just thought that this app might work for people with similar problems to mine that don't mind the pause.  It's the closest thing I've found to a solution.

Thanks to FARR and TicTocTitle, I rarely need to access my taskbar, so it stays autohidden, and I gain the extra bit of space for full screen apps. 

There are two problems keeping me from a super-slick, full-screen world of wonder:

1 (a little annoying).  Autohide still makes space for the taskbar when an app opens.  This is annoying, but I could live with it.

2 (the painful, evil part).  I don't want to lose access to the taskbar completely, but I also don't want it being triggered when I go to use some of the controls that are located at the bottom/top/side of the apps I use.  When I maximize the app after problem #1, it puts some controls very close to the triggering point for the autohide to unhide.

What I'd love is similar to CloseFence, but basically reversed.  It would make a very small (or configurable-sized?) spot on the autohidden taskbar available for triggering.  Otherwise, it would ignore the mouse.  For me, if it only popped up when I moused into the very corner, it would be ideal.

The other issue, that of the taskbar getting space made for it, I have no idea about.  It's just annoying.
