just realized I should have posted this in the Developers Corner board. Can I get this moved please? 

I am currently looking into using PHP and Get/Post functions to give my app the ability of sending user feedback or bug reports via an html form on our site. We are currently just sending these through POP3. I have never done any heavy work in PHP so I have a few concerns about the security downfalls of doing something like this.

Any opinions? Could I be going about this the wrong way?

I just wanted to let everyone know about an application that Deo, my friend and co-developer of Quick Cliq, developed.

It is for quickly finding strings in text files and supports RegEx.
I use it for searching through source code and it has helped immensely.

You love coding, developing, and building a product. It is great while you are really moving along and even better the closer to release.

... But what about after? If you release as freeware with no ulterior motives and very little donations coming in what is your motivation to support all the users you have acquired? Why would you spend quite a bit of your free time fixing tiny bugs, answering e-mails and pushing updates?

Well the privacy of my users is very important to me, and because this is for nothing but curiosity I don't see making an Opt in/out policy to send usage information home worth the effort to code.
I guess I will just have to keep getting the rough estimates from the number of times the app was updated.

What do you think is the easiest way to get the number of current and active users for your software?

We have an updater in place and we can track how many times the application has been updated to all versions, but then new users could also download the newest version which they might use or just throw away so they may not necessarily be a user.

Anybody have an elegant way of finding out this information without intruding on the users privacy?

Usage
Installation
Just Unzip the application and run it - It is completely portable!

Using the Application
Just run the application and read the message box that pops up on first run.
Open the main menu with the default hotkey - Win + Z
Or the default mouse gesture - Hold the right mouse button down and drag down then release (you only need to drag a few pixels)
Go to the Add/Change item at the bottom of the menu to start adding some items!

Quick Cliq is in active development so please let us know what you think we are doing wrong or right and of any bugs if you find some. The better our user base is the better the application will be. My new application (trying not to toot my own horn, but it may be useful to you) Quick Cliq offers 9 additional clipboards that can hold anything the standard clipboard can including binary data and application specific data. You can also view, edit, and append data to the clipboards making it a useful list maker.

Ctrl + Win + 1-9 appends data

The clipboard functionality is an extra feature of the application so if you aren't interested in the main app then I wouldn't use it just for the clipboards. 

Hello again everyone. It has been a while since I have posted on the board but it is because I have been working on my new application that I would like to share with you.

About a year ago Mouser invited me to post about my application JumpTo - http://www.donationcoder....m/index.php?topic=21352.0
About 4 months ago I started working on the new version, a complete rewrite from the ground up, with a co-developer. The end result was something far above the old application with many new features.

Just like JumpTo, Quick Cliq is a menu based launcher that can be shown anywhere by the use of customizable hotkeys or mouse gestures. The launcher side of the app holds an unlimited number of menu items and sub menus all filled with menu items that point to your favorite folders, files, urls, and command line commands. It is also possible to add more than one shortcut to an item allowing you to launch many things at once. Quick Cliq also offers a Folder Menu shortcut option that will allow you to navigate a directory and its sub directories through a menu allowing faster navigation without opening any explorer windows. All sub menus can also be saved as a file that will run upon execution without having to run Quick Cliq at all.

Among some of the other features included is our Clips menu. The clips menu effectively creates 9 additional clipboards modeled after the standard windows clipboard but with new functionality. The clips will hold anything that the standard clipboard will including binary and application specific data. You can also view, edit, save to a file, and append to a clip making it a very useful list making tool.

Quick Cliq also offers memos that can be sent to the clipboard for pasting or sent directly to the active window; in example an email signature. The windows menu allows you to hide and show an unlimited amount of windows or set a window to be "Always On Top".

I wanted to tell everyone about JumpTo, a freeware app I have been working on for the last couple of months.

Here is a brief description from my site:

JumpTo is a menu based launcher that holds static links to files, folders, programs, websites, and even command line parameters. The links can be held inside of 4 customizable sub-menus or alternately launched through a text command. JumpTo also offers quick note taking, window management (hide and show windows), a runbox replacement with added functionality, along with other smaller less used functions like, importing the date & time to the clipboard for easy pasting and formatting the contents of the clipboard to plain text or converting a copied file or folder to its full path.

Best of all JumpTo is small (under 1mb), quick, and can be shown anywhere on the screen and in any program through various hot keys (including one that doesn't involve the keyboard for extra quick access)

JumpTo has been tested on all versions of windows with the exception of Win7, although many of my Win7 users report no bugs.

JumpTo was written is AHK and is currently under development.
I have also been thinking about opening the code up. If anyone is interested in helping develop JumpTo let me know, I love working with others!

Wavosaur is great!
I have been using it as a replacement of sound forge for a while now.
The statistics and analysis features are great and extremely accurate.

Is something that has to stay running in the background at all times?

I have an old slow WinME machine that has had a tooltip issue for many years, but not one of tooltips showing behind the taskbar. The issue I have had is tooltips failing to show at all, anywhere, in any app. They just suddenly stop working, then later start working again. I have never been able to figure out what is triggering it or how to fix it.

One of the apps I wrote even had a feature added to it specifically because of this problem. My clock application has the option to show the date in a dialog, for use when my tooltips stop working.

I wonder if this utility could help, but then again if it has to stay running in the background at all times, it wouldn't be too useful on that really low spec machine.

the app stays running and registers as a service but the working set memory is very low, around 1200k with virtually no file reads or writes. I wouldn't think you would experience any performance degradation, but if you do the app is very easy to uninstall.

This tool written by ladiko over at the AHK forum not only gives you more options when compiling your AHK scripts but also has an option to NOT use UPX.
