In line with JennyB's comments - what I like is FARR's ability to easily tune search results. IMO, that is a great advantage over GDS (and something I think that GDS will probably never add, it would give away too much).

Now having the ability to talk to GDS via a plug-in would be cool. Assimilation is the key - resistance is futile  Grin

Hi Mouser,

First off, I think V2 is really wonderful. I really appreciate the addition of phrase search and the directory modifiers. Those are two great features (IMO).

I was playing around and discovered the following:  When using the arrow  keys to navigate folder structures in the results pane, the focus switches back  the search box after pressing one arrow key. For navigation purposes, I think it would be better for the results pane to maintain focus, so that the user can keep stepping through the directory hierarchy, rather than having to hit the down arrow to get focus back to the results pane. This fits in the realm of being a minor annoyance, but I think maintaining focus (if not hard to do) is the way to go.

Also, I note that when the path you are navigating contains a "-", that the part of the path after the "-" gets parsed out and appended to the end of the path string in the search box. IMO, this is a minor thing, and I'm not sure how you'd fix this without changing the "-" modifier to a character that is not acceptible in folder or file names.

Thanks again!

I just noticed that the window transparency setting doesn't work anymore. It actually works only when I move the slide, but once it's set and I close the Option window, the FARR main window goes back to its normal opacity.

I've noticed this behavior when the skin pack is installed. Without it, transparency setting works ok.

Mouser,

If you'd asked this question a while ago, I would have voted for improved speed. But since I got a new computer (and maybe because of search enhancements in FARR 2), I don't think the extra speed is now a priority. I also think that having the directory modifiers helps in the speed department as well.

I vote for the plugin system, especially for indexing the outlook address book, which I think would be a useful feature. Also, I envision a plugin architecture as eventually allowing access to the indices compiled by programs like google desktop, copernic, etc. These results could be assigned a weight, just like the internal FARR results.

maybe you've managed to get it to do something magical ?

Where would we be without magic?

Hi Mouser,

I've noticed that when searching for folders, F&RR can find the following (when searching for ABC):
c:\ABC
but not:
c:\DEF\ABC

Both c:\ and c:\DEF are in my search folder list.

This is a way to differentiate between search for files and search for folders. If the string entered in the FARR dialog contains a backslash, the there should be a bonus added to folders that match the search criteria.

Maybe there are other ways to implement this, but the above seems to fit with the way things are currently being done.

I wonder, has anyone had any luck building an alias using this technique? The one I put together will bring up the GDS search page, but I've been unable to successfully pass it a search query.

Of course, I am referring to 2.0  embarassed

I've also observed some interesting behavior with FARR. I have a dual CPU system, and two copies of FARR are loaded whenever I enable the option to run when windows starts. I've tried a reinstall and cleaning FARR out of the startup folder, and the behavior still occurs. This is not a biggie, but just thought you'd like to know. I am running 1.7.20.

10  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Handling of multiple keywords on: October 15, 2005, 04:57:44 PM
I think the simple answer is "make it work like google" Wink. But that probably creates a lot of work.

I like the approach of higher score for files containing the greatest number of keywords. Then there could be a bonus for finding files that have the keywords in the proper sequence, e.g. first_second and second_third score higher than third_first.

This could be something like a bonus for each keyword matched, then a bonus for sequence matching (sort of like left-most match that is currently in FRR). I like the current score based setup, and the above fits within that framework.

Hi,

Some time ago, I posted a similar question in this thread:

http://www.donationcoder....rum/index.php?topic=888.0

So, in searching for a file called first_second_last.ext, I'd like for that file to be returned in the results window if I enter any of the following:

first
first second
third second
first .ext

I hope the above is clear. Maybe this is something planned for 2.0?

Hi,

I don't know if this is a bug or not. I have quite a few files on my HD that are named something like this:

first_middle_last.xxx

With an underscore used as the delimiter. If I use FRR to search for the string:

first middle

The file first_middle_last does not appear.

I think it would be great to have an option to define certain characters as being delimiters, and maybe have them be ignored in the search, or have some sort of weighting scheme for them.  thumbs up
