I too mourn the loss. I've been searching for an alternative, like everyone else. My need is for it to be cross platform/cross device. I've tried to like Feedly. The web version is great but the mobile versions suck, IMO. I think I have settled on Netvibes. It has the look and feel of GReader. No mobile apps but the mobile web page is pretty slick.
I had used Netvibes already as a start page using the widget interface. If you turn on the Reader interface then it works just like GReader.
I'm anxious to see what Digg is going to offer, and how soon.

There was no "would-you-like-to-also-trial-this-or-that-program?" included. Are you sure? I ended up purchasing it and this is what I get when I click custom install: Edit:I stand corrected (sort of) I like the program so I bought it. After I purchased, I uninstalled the trial and downloaded again from the link provided in the email they sent me. It turns out that the purchase email points to an earlier version. After install it tells me there is a newer version out there. The new version does NOT include the shareware. Also, I notice that the version from the email link is twice the size of the current version (7 MB vs 3.6 MB, interesting)

Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Remove Hidden Boot Partition
|

My wife's laptop came with a recovery partition, a hidden os boot partition and a Win 8 partition. The machine doesn't have an optical disk or recovery CDs. I have an image of the Win partition and I'd like to delete the big recovery partition. It seems the only way to do that is to wipe the entire disk using diskpart; ordinary partition tools won't touch it. This would wipe out the hidden boot partition so, my question is can I restore the Win 8 image on a fresh drive and get it to boot? Is there a way to move whatever is necessary in the hidden boot partition to the main Win partition and reimage?
I'm thinking all this isn't doable and I can't afford to remove the recovery partition before I know I can get a bootable solution from an image.

Everybody has their own workflow and one isn't more stupid than the other. I avoid the keyboard as I'm usually leaning back in my chair so that the mouse and a launch bar is easier. A well organized start menu is also pretty handy. If you never organize your start menu and have a separate folder for 100 different apps, then yeah, typing is faster. The Macs are known for their ease of use and they come with a dock preinstalled.
Just because you prefer typing for your entry doesn't mean you should ridicule those who prefer a different workflow.

Why do you need the start menu? You can simply click the lower left corner, where the start button used to be, and you can type just as you would before. I don't know many people who navigated the menus rather than typing the entry name...At least users NOT on XP.
That's not an argument for the new interface. All you need is a basic shell. Therefore, not much incentive to upgrade. Personally, I use Mouser's Launchbar Commander, which also doesn't work on "the interface formally known as Metro".

Place shortcut to preferred desktop application(s) on Start Screen, Boot, Click/Touch, Done ... Why that so hard?
And what happens when you close that desktop app? You are left staring at the old style desktop without a start button! That is why I installed Classic Shell and just stick to the old desktop. I would gladly use the new interface if you could consistently stay in it.

Which is what I thought I did... But... Apparently Acronis deletes backups without asking... Not happy. I had a perfectly configured system... in a deleted backup. I don't even have it installed. I installed it only long enough to create the boot disk. I only make images from the boot disk.

I'd argue that backup software is slowly becoming irrelevant. Having said that, I do use Acronis to create a system image. I also use Syncback to backup data to my NAS.
I believe backup software is becoming irrelevant because of cloud computing. The new MS Office is so tightly integrated with Skydrive that I point the Windows My Documents folder to the document folder in Skydrive. All my music is backed up in Google Music. Most everything else is backed up in Dropbox.
The cloud backups are safer than the local backups due to versioning. I have been able to restore old versions of documents that had been overwritten several times.
The only thing I use True Image for is to create a base image of new OS installs. I like to install windows, activate it and tweak it just the way I like it. Then I add a few essential utilities and image it. Now, I can have a fresh Windows install applied in only a matter of minutes.

I have been using Win 8 for quite some time now as I am a Technet member. I have to say that I still find the workflow confusing and a bit cumbersome. Metro wouldn't be so bad if you could just stay there but all my apps dump me in the desktop when they are done. The user has to switch back and forth themselves. As a consequence, I like to stay with the desktop as I'm more familiar with it. Also, you have more control over how your programs launch and close from the desktop. I can launch with arguments from the desktop but not Metro.
My impression is that Microsoft feels that PCs are on the way out and tablets and other devices are the future. They have compromised the desktop experience in an effort to position themselves for the future. I do have an iPad and love it but I will not give up my PCs any time in the near future.

I did try it but had a devil of a time trying to find a free hotkey combination. I'm running Win8 and the standard Win+W is already reserved in the OS for Settings. I tried many combinations of the Win key and found most already reserved. I did use a Ctrl key combo that worked while I was trying it out but in the end I decided Listary wasn't for me. Nothing wrong with it, I just found that with tools I already had I didn't need it.
I just point this out because Win8 is just coming to market. I had an early copy from my Technet subscription.

Couple of observations:
Listary seems to be a modern version of the old powerpro.
Maybe one small aspect of Powerpro. IMO, Powerpro is the single greatest utility ever coded. I have Windows 8 Pro x64 and I still use Powerpro. I use it for managing my clipboard, I built my dock using PP, I use it for text replacement, etc. True, it's also capable for favorite folders but I don't need that aspect as I use Directory Opus and Windows built in favorites for dialogs.

I use a 3 point strategy. When I originally install a new OS I set it up just how I like it and image it before I install any other software. Now, I'm never more than 20 minutes away from a fresh, clean install. I sometimes create a differential image after installing my software but I prefer to reinstall them manually after applying the base image.
For file backups I use Syncback Pro to backup to my NAS.
For versioning I rely on Dropbox to do that for me. I've had occasion to use this feature and it is really good.
