1  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Help needed recording streaming video. on: September 28, 2014, 07:13:25 AM
thanks all for the replies.

the show in question is the daily catholic mass televised by EWTN. it runs for one hour daily. EWTN via Brightcove seems to have bent over backwards to prevent you from recording their shows on a pc. odd considering they're a christian religious network.

i've tried VLC and every browser helper i could find for both chrome and firefox. all to no avail.

i also tried 8 different video capture tools (2 free 6 commercial). only one of them worked. but it only worked intermittently. hardly worth the $79 asking price for something that failed to start recording or errored out somewhere 2 times out of 3. i would have gladly bought it had it worked better.

almost makes one long for the days of VHS tape. and mourn that video DAT recording never really took off.

so be it.

in the end i suggested the only practical way would be to videotape it. if they could find a 'still working' VHS recorder. it turned out one of their staff did. and she volunteered to do it for them.

problem solved. amen.
2  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Help needed recording streaming video. on: September 22, 2014, 08:41:49 AM
hi all!

i'm working with a nursing home on a totally unrelated technical project
and got asked if there were a way to record a stream at this URL
and burn it to DVD.

i have very little experience doing this sort of thing. none really. is
there a how-to or good Youtube video somebody can point me to on how to
do this if it's too long to post? i tried looking at some video sites.
and doing some google-fu. but all the advice i've seen is either an ad
for a specific piece of comercial software or has a heavy emphasis on
'free' at the expense of reliability and convenience. it's ok if i need
to purchase software to do this easily. but i don't have the time to
start a science faire project right now. or spend a lot of time on it. i
suppose it would be easier just to say 'no' to the person who asked. but
this is for elderly shut-ins. so i can't just brush the question off.

are there any media geeks out there that can help me with this?

it's important to teach American children to accept electronic surveillance and coercion as early as possible. this misguided app will certainly help do that. :-(

i thought lunopolis was a riot. i agree with 40hz. it isn't meant to be taken seriously. it's very obviously poking fun at scientology and cheesy conspiracy theory videos. it takes about 15 minutes viewing before you get it and see its all a big joke. its style of humor is similar to *best in show* or *a mighty wind* ;-)

She thinks however she might be Finnish, so much for a non existing language...

wait.. you mean the Finnish language is a real thing?  I thought it was a made up language like Klingon..  huh

lol! you're joking. i hope.

fyi: Tolkien modeled his elvish language (called: quenyan) on the finnish language. if you go look on youtube for readings from the Kalevala (finland's national epic) you can hear what it sounds like. it's a pretty language. Tolkein also borrowed from the Kalevala for his own stories. :-)

14  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Want to run Khan Academy Offline? Introducing KA Lite! on: December 20, 2012, 12:30:24 PM
I'm not discounting the project...

@pk: of course you are... ;-)

the creators of pi took strong steps to keeping their device from being another olpc-like thing to either be ignored or hijacked by big businesses like olpc was. in my daughter's school the administration openly admitted they worried about things like the raspberry. because from what they heard about it, the self-taught kids were more knowledgeable about them than most teachers were. so where would their math and science teachers fit in with something like that? that is a question which begs a even bigger question. ;-))
and don't even get me started on what their attitude towards the Khan Academy is.

people who make their living supporting microsoft environments seem to be very much for it now that it's a done deal. as are those people who like anything as long as it's new. my company's IT people are calling it 'job security' for the next two years. the rest of us where i am still want to be convinced. and we still don't want to have to use a touchscreen to get the full benefit. ;-)
16  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Why did it never occur to me.. You can wash a keyboard in water. on: November 23, 2012, 07:40:35 AM
a couple of squirts of formula 409 or simple green cleaner and a gentle scrub with a soft nail or facial brush, followed by a wipe down with dry and then damp paper towels will give you the same result without going thru the heroics of dunking the entire keyboard. but dunking it does work as long as you take care to be sure it's completely dry before plugging it in. i learned about that when my niece dropped a full glass of cola on my keyboard at home and i figured what the heck? i soaked it for a few hours in my kitchen sink with tepid water, rinsed and drained it and let it dry for about a week. worked just fine. even the backlighting was still ok. :-)

i don't think it's a good idea to encourage investigative news to see itself as part of law enforcement. that's a very slippery slope. :>(

20  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Software Charity? on: May 30, 2012, 08:35:14 AM
To be perfectly honest, I just don't have the time to run around trying to find XYZ and needs software ABC.

So, the basic question is, is there already some kind of charity organization that does all the running around?

It doesn't sound like there is... Oh well...

i do a lot of work with charities and causes. so I hear from and meet a lot of people like you who legitimately want to do some good - but remain personally uninvolved for whatever reason. it's almost like a variation of noblesse oblige where somehow sending off a fat check is all that is needed to make a difference. well guess what? it's suboptimal. and charities that are primarily interested in getting contributions or donations without involving the donors (usually the really big ones) aren't always the best groups to get involved with. wish it were otherwise. but it's not. :-)
21  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Software Charity? on: May 29, 2012, 05:59:00 PM
some of what you do could work well with something like this: www.gngnca.org

why not see if there is something like Guitars Not Guns where you are. it's always best to start local when it comes to charity giving and branch out from there. :-)
22  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Kingsoft Office Suite Standard for free today on: May 23, 2012, 10:09:37 AM
it's nice to be given the option of not using a ribbon bar.

but it also seems to be totally ignorant about open and closed quotation marks. there is also no "smart quotes" option afaict. this can be a real problem if you use quotes a lot. submitting anything using the "inches" sign instead of proper quotation marks brands you as an amateur. and some publications (and university instructors) will summarily reject a manuscript that doesn't use the correct symbols. something to be aware of.
23  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Trello - Project / Todo Management on: May 18, 2012, 10:17:01 AM
it is handy. But it has two major flaws afaic. 1- it wastes too much screen space with that huge panel on the right hand side. a menu, string of icons, or a ribbon across the top would be better. 2 - you can't completely delete a list once it's created. understandable in a group situation. but unnecessary and annoying if you're a single user. my other major concern is that it's free. i always worry about getting too vested in something without a price tag. I always worry they'll suddenly start charging and the price will be higher than what it's worth to me to keep it. i'd rather have to pay up front, or know what the non-free version will cost *before* i get too far into it. but maybe thats just me. ;-)
