1  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / FileMaker "Buy One / Give One" Deal on: October 30, 2014, 08:51:41 AM
I've been looking at getting a DB program recently for a couple of things I want to try.
Happened to see this promotion yesterday.

I'm also not a fan of Apple. But that being said, I do think the iPad and their computers are good for non-technical people or those that just don't want to worry about keeping up with updates, typical virus issues, etc.
It boils down to the main uses. If it is just browsing, email, ebooks etc, it is a good choice. Plus there is the installed word processing, spreadsheet, calendar, contacts,
Case in point, I have a neighbor that recently purchased an Apple desktop pc. He's very happy with it. He's older, though age isn't a factor in who can use a pc. He's been through 2 windows machines over the past 6 years. A big part of that is not keeping it up to date, but he just didn't want to deal with it. He just wants to turn it on and browse, email and games.

Apples are expensive. But I'm told part of that cost is for the after sale support they provide. In my neighbor's case, he purchased at a local Apple store. They sat down with him, went through everything and made sure he was comfortable. And he's called them with questions. You'd have to know him to realize the $$ value of this after sale support.

If there is a local Apple store, have her go and try one. I'm told they will let people "play" with them in the store for quite a while without pressure. Of course others may have different experiences.
If she does decide on an iPad take a look at Apple's refurb store. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad
Looks like they have different generation units available. Maybe she doesn't need the latest and greatest. And they warranty them.

I've also been hearing things about Chromebooks lately. Not sure if that includes a tablet version. Supposedly an easier to use Android device. Might look at those.

Good luck with your mother-in-law's decision.

Not sure if this will fit the bill but have you looked at Listary. http://www.listary.com/
You can set up a favorites menu and it can also keep track of recently accessed folders to provide easier navigation.
It helps me on a daily basis.

Edit: dr_Andus mentioned Listary while I was posting. Direct Folders is also good.

It would help to access object selection mode with a key shortcut
good idea, i will add a hotkey to toggle in and out of object selection mode.

Is there a possibility this could also be available through a right-click context menu?
5  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: DRM in your coffee maker, to stop you from brewing unlicensed coffees on: October 12, 2014, 10:35:01 AM
Thanks for posting App...
I'd heard rumors of this but didn't research it further. I was planning to look at a Keurig the next time my good old Bunn coffee maker gave it up.
And then buy a couple of the reuseable baskets to be able to use the coffee of my choice.
Guess I'll be rethinking that decision.

I mostly use Mouser's Clipboard Help+Spell. At times though, Ethervane Echo suits my needs better. It was developed by a DonationCoder member. It hasn't been updated since 2012 (maybe 2013) but I've not had any problems with it.

Here's where you can download and find a link to the developer's site.

7  DonationCoder.com Software / Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: How much value would there be in an optional floating small clip window? on: October 04, 2014, 09:45:14 PM
I think it would be helpful. It would be similar to Ethervane Echo?
I've been running both it and CH&S at the same time for awhile now so I would have that quick paste feature and also the ability of storing images with CH&S.

Or glued up 2x4's like this. It's not sanded and finished yet.
[attachthumb=1]

Here's a picture I found of a bed using recycled wood.
[attachthumb=2]

Found this site in the UK with some pictures of beds using reclaimed wood.
http://www.eatsleeplive.co.uk/products/bedroom-furniture/beds/
Click on each of the bed types and you can see more close-up details. These have more of a distressed look.

May give you some more ideas.

Ok i've got my basic structural plan worked out: (see attachment in previous post) (see attachment in previous post)
I used SketchUp, which can be pretty darn painful to use.. I wish there was something better.  The dimensions are only rough estimates since they are difficult to tweak, but the basic idea comes through.

Main issue I was trying to solve with my plan was to provide rock solid stability and support for a large king size bed (76" x 80") and have the sides look reasonably nice (in my bedroom you can really only see one side of the bed).

Notes: Headboard and footboard will not look like exactly like that, I plan to use reclaimed wood for the inset part; slats will cover entire surface; dimensions are off a little because i couldn't get them perfect.

Inspiration came from the farmhouse bed plans on the Anna White site.

My main concern with the plan is the use of the 4x4s..  I am concerned that they are going to turn out ugly when stained and finished.

Consider using glued up 1x boards.

I questioned the square screen when the Passport was 1st being talked about. After seeing it in action it makes sense. I'm talking more for business users.
For anyone interested in seeing it, here is the link to the North American kickoff. They show and talk about the square screen and why at 22 mins in.

What I want is my $30 nokia in a watch shape, with tethering, and syncing all the data to your 'family' of devices.

Personally, I just want my phone to be a phone ... But the Samsung Gear S rig in this iWatch vs. Samsung review seems to do much of what you're after.

+1 on just being a phone.
To me they just look like a fancier version of a law enforcement ankle bracelet.
12  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Rethink Smartwatch on: September 16, 2014, 11:27:19 AM
What do you guys think?   Should I start a kickstarter?  Or am I only designing for myself?

I swear I read an article that this is how the new Apple watch will work, i.e., you would need an iPhone to get the full (or any) use out of it.

I heard the same thing. It was on a podcast or news station announcing the new apple product.
Blackberry also did something similar a couple of years ago with their phones and discontinued tablet. Called it a bridge.

So very sorry to hear about Saffron's passing.
Have been in the same place more times than than i want to remember with the passing of one of our pets. They truly are a family member.
It is hard to come up with all of the right words. What does help is to know you gave her a loving and comfortable life during time she was here. And she knew it.

AbteriX,

I am a little late here. Is this similar to what you are asking?

In your second post you make reference to different measurement devices/instruments that may be used.
So not only will the user need to configure software or firmware for using the device, they also will have to follow certain other steps related to the application and device for everything to operate properly.

It will be a combination of things software, hardware and application?

A thought. Possibility you have a keyboard starting to get flaky?
I've read of similar things, with totally different programs, that after all sorts of settings chasing and hair pulling it ended up being the keyboard.

thanks bob -- so your single-instance detection is working correctly.
ps. the new beta does away with that "hello there" message.

There's probably some other reason you are taking out the "Hello there" message. But it never bothered me. Actually I kind of liked the reminder I had it already running. Sometimes some of my tray icons disappear for seemingly no reason. In my case it kept me from having two instances running.

I'm on Win 7 Pro, x64 machine. SC is installed in the x86 program files folder.

Edit
Should have told you I'm still running V4.8. Haven't installed the beta yet.
22  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RightNote Pro 50% Off Thru January 31 on: January 27, 2014, 09:38:59 PM
I see the difference. Similar to copy/pastes I've done in other programs. It's not a big thing but my at times OCD tendencies would have me trying to fix it to look the same. I've done it before.
If I want perfect verbatim copies of complete web pages, I would use Local Website Archive, which does that job well.  You might find the free-for-personal-use version adequate.  It looks like recent versions have more features than I realised, but, AFAICS, it's a whole-page-capture program, and doesn't intend to have all the features of a note-taker.
I think for the time being I'll stay with version 2 and keep saving my web pages in TreeProjects.
Does that mean that you prefer TreeProjects' web page capture to RightNote's, or, that having a TreeProjects license or not needing one, there's no point in upgrading RightNote?
Thanks for the link to Local Website Archive. I'll be checking it out.

On using TreeProjects for my web page saves, you hit both reasons. I do prefer it because it is easier for ME to use. I've done it enough times I am able to get the page into TreeProjects with just a few keystrokes. And like you mention, I have the license. It works for me so no real need to spend the extra money right now.

I do think RightNote is a good program. I'll probably continue to use my purchased version 2 for some of my needs. I just don't use Evernote enough to invest in version 3 yet.
23  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RightNote Pro 50% Off Thru January 31 on: January 25, 2014, 06:48:46 PM
what are your thoughts on the webpage note feature? I was going to give it a try and installed the version 3 update. It changed my license to the freeware version instead of a trial and I haven't been able to get the webpage note feature to work.
I've been using it a bit as a stash for clips from the web.  Not quite everything works the way I'd like, I think there are still issues around scrolling the tree to the current clip, but I consider the quality of the web clips to be good.  Here is a comparison of a direct screenshot from Firefox with the same thing clipped in RightNote:

Left - Firefox:                 Right - RightNote (see attachment in previous post)   (see attachment in previous post)
A quick check of Wikipedia gave even better results.  Be aware that the web clip feature is only available in the Pro version.  See RightNote Version Comparisons.

Thanks for posting the comparisons. I see the difference. Similar to copy/pastes I've done in other programs. It's not a big thing but my at times OCD tendencies would have me trying to fix it to look the same. I've done it before.

RightNote is a great program though.

I'm thinking of updating my version 2 license to 3.
To anyone that already has, what are your thoughts on the webpage note feature? I was going to give it a try and installed the version 3 update. It changed my license to the freeware version instead of a trial and I haven't been able to get the webpage note feature to work.
I've been using TreeProjects to save web pages and it's working but would like to compare the two.

I haven't emailed Bauer yet, thought I'd ask here 1st.

Thanks
25  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Where are comments stored? on: September 29, 2013, 01:05:24 PM
FWIW, XnView has search (Tools-->Search) that includes searching EXIF but when I tried the SC comments they are not EXIF, at least not to XnView

EXIF is an area where I've consistently found software sorely lacking. There are GREAT libraries to help out with it all, but... their implementations in different programs are often lacking.

Still couldn't locate my old post to reference but I know it's around somewhere. Anyway, I also tried a number of different programs to search for comments data. And I also wanted to try and generate a catalog or list of sorts with the filename, date and the comments o saved with the screenshot. It seemed like it should be pretty easy but wasn't.

From what I remember, the comments are stored in the Exif data. But, the field name (tag in Exif lingo) is different for file types. Jpg,png, etc. While reading up on Exif data formats I learned it seemed to be more beneficial to photographers for camera settings etc than for comments, descriptions fields/tags. No consistency.

For me at the time, it ended up it took less time manually going through and creating my own lists than trying the different progs and figuring out a way to do it.

I think it would be a great NANY app contribution.
I'll be watching this thread to see if anything new comes out.
