Don't forget it's pretty easy to just get the good old start menu back in Windows 8. Multiple 3rd party tools are available. I use Start8 myself which works wonders, it even enables you to boot directly to the desktop instead of to Metro when starting your PC. It's only $5 so I think that's worth it =) Of course I still use an application launcher for the majority of things I launch but the total lack of old Start Menu was just frustrating.

There are a few options in farr for whether to "resolve shortcuts" on the bottom of the Search Behavior tab -- you might try turning those off and seeing if that fixes it. If not let me know -- I can surely fix it as an option.
Yeah I tried playing with those settings (and some under Launch Options) yesterday but unfortunately they did not solve it I think you can easily reproduce by just making a shortcut to some random executable and associate a .ico with a different icon. I also notice I launch search results using the F1-F9 keys for some reason, but I cannot seem to configure this behavior (I'd like to disable it)? I already disabled launching using the numpad keys in options.
Great

Hi Mouser, Thank you for fixing the crash Another thing I noticed; FARR does not seem to pick up custom .ico files set on a shortcut, but instead always (?) uses the 'integrated' icon file of an executable. Case in point; I created shortcuts to psshutdown.exe (available here for people who want it) to shutdown / reboot / standby my computer using FARR and have associated the proper icons via Properties > Change Icon... This works fine in Windows (of course) and also in Launchy, but FARR seems to not pick up the icon. The result in the FARR window is the middle (.lnk) file which has the standby.ico associated with it, and points to the psshutdown.exe file next to it. ~edit: Hehe, I just realized this exact issue has occurred in the past, I dug up my old post. Perhaps it can help you in finding / solving the problem. 3 years ago already, time flies xD ~edit2: I also notice I launch search results using the F1-F9 keys for some reason, but I cannot seem to configure this behavior (I'd like to disable it)? I already disabled launching using the numpad keys in options.

How strange!
I don't think removing core aliases is the cause of this problem, but i'm not sure what is..
I'm guessing you might have one of your own aliases configured to use %?
Can you do a little more experimenting to figure out what's going on?
The special use of % is actually governed by a new alias "AliasGroups\Installed\EnvVars\EnvVars.alias", so if you delete/disable that you will see behavior when it is around.
Love to hear some more clues about what might be causing this.
Mouser, Well I actually removed my previous version completely and reinstalled the new beta (ZIP version), so none of my aliases were interfering ^_^ Here are the steps to reproduce: 1) Download portable zip version, extract 2) Delete contents of \AliasGroups\Installed\Core_Aliases 3) Start FARR 4) Press % [SPACE] 5) Enjoy the crash =)

Hi Mouser, The new beta (v2.107.02) crashes for me when typing '%' to list environment variables, followed by pressing the spacebar. In the picture I pressed them in quick succession, hence no environment variables were displayed at all. However, even if you press %, wait till the list gets populated and then press space it happens. Some testing leads me to believe this only occurs when the Core-Misc.alias file is missing from %FARRDIR%\AliasGroups\Installed\Core_Aliases. I don't like all the aliases FARR comes with (websites, search etc) so I tend to remove all contents of Core_Aliases to get rid of them. Me removing all those files is actually caused by the cumbersome process to disable every built-in alias through the Options dialog; you have to select every alias/group from the dropdown, then uncheck the box 'Enable alias'. It would be nice to have a way to disable / enable all aliases at once =)

hi, it appears the jscalc plugin contains the same bug as the fcalc plugin; when you increment a variable by n using x = x + n; it somehow increments x by 2*n. Try: x = 1. x = x + 1 or x = 1 x += 1 you would think x now holds the value 2. However, it appears x is now 3. could you fix this easily? would be nice . Thanks in advance!

As someone who is not a geeky type I like the fact that it is easy to use and the killer for me is that it uses much less memory than the others. The way i have FARR set up it sits in the tray and uses 2mb! executor uses 5.5
So you're not the geeky type but the biggest advantage of FARR over other tools is that it uses a whopping 3.5 MB less memory? You do realize you most likely have about 1000+ MB at your disposal? Don't get me wrong it's nice when an app uses little RAM but 2 MB vs 5.5 MB doesn't make any difference (yes more than double but it's 3.5 MB for crying out loud).

Thanks for your quick answer Mouser.
About the n+1 items: I also thought about the duplicates but it actually turns out to be a slight bug anyway, it simply found the same file twice.. This happened for some more files I noticed. Below is the output with 'remove duplicates' unchecked. This isn't supposed to happen I guess?
~edit: actually notice the difference in capital letters: Programs\.... vs programs\

Mouser what did you do!? Apparently you tried to fix some icon display issues but now you messed up some for me They have always worked before. ~edit: oh and I just noticed the statusbar reports "Found n+1 results in x seconds" for n items -- in the attached screenshot it reports finding 2 results but it just found one. This does not always happen but usually it does, quite strange. I don't have any other file named 'standby' or something in my search folders if I recall correctly. I attached the .ico file (rename it from .txt as it's not allowed to post .ico files... lol)I attached a .zip file containing all 3 .ico files from the screenshot.

Nice there's a plugin to talk to a desktop search tool now As I do not really use WDS at this moment other than to index my e-mails I will not yet try it, but I could give it a go once I figure out the advantages of indexing my files -- I know exactly where my files are and what their contents are so I don't think I really need to. Mouser; it's not exactly instant live file searching of contents as the file has to be indexed first But perhaps WDM indexes on file changes (I don't know), so then it's semi-live searching anyway

DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: How do you handle large amounts of files? Are tags possible?
|
on: March 01, 2009, 07:06:54 PM

Desktop search tools aren't going to help with tagging, true. However, I do believe they will have a much higher hit rate than FARR as they also scan the contents of files. Actually, they can guarantee that higher hit rate as they also search the file name. In the example he mentioned about the noise policy; the document itself will most likely contain the keywords 'party', 'construction' etcetera, hence the file noisepolicy.doc will pop up when searching, right? My point is, manually tagging the files is a very time consuming task, and perhaps not even needed when the tags you want to set are already present in the text I am questioning the effectiveness of FARR in this situation versus some kind desktop search tool with the advantages I mentioned (which does not take away from the fact FARR is awesome for launching stuff )
