1  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: FaRR not closing after launch on: March 20, 2013, 02:48:40 PM
Weird.  Yep, sure enough, mine started working all by itself...
2  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / FaRR not closing after launch on: March 19, 2013, 07:37:36 AM
I had an SSD crash and had to reinstall all my stuff.  I had my FaRR settings backed up, so everything copied across, but now FaRR doesn't disappear when I launch something.  I could live with that, but it even leaves the typing in the window, so I have to delete that first before I can move on.

I've tried unchecking and then re-checking the "Close window by default" in the Window Options, but it didn't make any difference.  Any other ideas?

Thanks, Armando!  FWIW, this is also the same problem I've been having for well over a year, as described in this thread...

Interesting - I was thinking about posting a followup, too, because I'm still regularly having the problem 3 or 4 times per day.  It seems that it happens if I haven't invoked FARR in the last hour or so.  If I come back to my computer after a meeting or something, it'll hang for a 5-10 seconds the first time I open it.  I'll try your trick, and see what happens.

Yeah, I found that out when I was forced to banish FARR to the inactive list for a few hours...  What a waste of a very easy-to-hit key sequence - I'm very happy it's now doing something extremely useful again!
6  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Hang while "searching history" on: May 23, 2011, 10:25:01 AM
Just fyi - deleting the entries in the Launch History list fixed the problem.  Thanks!
7  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Hang while "searching history" on: May 21, 2011, 04:36:18 PM
Not a problem at all - the hard part will be not using FARR for "half a day".  I guess the only way that's gonna happen is if I quit working that long.  Either that, or I have to close FARR.  Hmmmm - I wonder what Alt-Space does when FARR isn't there to look for it and jump into action....  huh
8  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Hang while "searching history" on: May 21, 2011, 04:30:46 PM
Thanks, Mouser.  I already had the "Stay in Memory Longer" setting selected.

I didn't specifically see a "Search History" tab, so I went to "Launch History".  Didn't see a "Clear" r/c option, so I picked "Delete all entries in this list".  I hope that's what you were intending me to do...

Thanks very much for your help!
9  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Hang while "searching history" on: May 21, 2011, 02:05:12 PM
I know this has been discussed, so I apologize for bringing it up again, but I can't find the solution here.  I've seen references to UNC paths, all kinds of other stuff, but nothing that seems relevant to my issue.  I just installed FARR on a new laptop, W7 Ultimate, SSD primary drive, and FARR keeps freezing for 5-10 seconds when I open it, always when "Searching history".  It only seems to do it when I haven't used FARR for a few minutes.  Right now, for example, as I'm trying to reproduce it, I can't, but it happens many times throughout the day, and I'm not restarting between occurrences.

Any ideas?

He didn't say a whole lot, but I thought his bottom line summary of FARR was spot on: "Nice."   cheesy

Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss

Thanks for pointing that out alias, it's a review that really gave me a nice feeling.  Thmbsup

You are most welcome, Sir Mousealot!  And most deserving, if I might add my own two cents' worth!

I also hope it brought some more much-deserved recognition for FARR - I think that site gets quite a few hits, from the references I've seen to it in other blogs, etc.  It all helps...

Thanks, Mouser - I knew you're the "grand poobah" of FaRR, so I was concerned that somebody might've been "manipulating" your stuff...
14  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012 on: September 07, 2010, 09:49:38 PM
Hi Mouser,

My CNET download tracker app just told me there's a 2.90.02 version of FARR out, so I dl'ed it and installed it without visiting the site first, and it does indeed say that's the version, but the version history in the Help file only shows versions through 2.90.01.  Any idea how I got a version that's later than the one here?  Did they somehow get hold of one they shouldn't have?

Thanks,

Alias

As mouser said:  "Welcome!"  You'll find this a fantastic site, with tons of really cool stuff (well, you already have, obviously, since FaRR counts for that all by itself...).

You asked a question on a subject that is really important to me - I don't know what your keyboard/mouse usage pattern is, but I NEVER use the mouse, if there's a faster way (and there usually is).  I use Vim as my text editor of choice, the ViEmu plug-in for Visual Studio, Word, and Outlook, Vimperator to give me Vi keybindings in Firefox, Listary to allow navigation of Explorer & Open/Save dialog boxes, and FaRR, of course, for just about everything else...

As mouser also said, FaRRAltTab is a fantastic way to switch between open windows, but it stopped working on my system when I upgraded to .NET 4.0, so I had to look for alternatives (until mouser gets around to putting this functionality in FaRR).  What I ended up doing was modifying an AutoHotKey script from their forum to my needs, and I uploaded it to here a few days ago.  It's a purely textual listing of your open windows that narrows as you type.  I modified it to use a bit smaller font, so more windows would be visible, and a few other cosmetic changes, but the main thing I did was disable the Alphabetical sorting of windows, so they show up in "Z-order" instead (most recently used on top), and make it pre-select the second most recently activated window.  That way, it can even replace the Windows built-in Alt-Tab with only the penalty of one additional keystroke (Enter), if you're only trying to jump back and forth between the last two, which I seem to do frequently.

I'll warn you, though:  It's not "pretty" - no thumbnails, no feedback on keystrokes typed, no cutesy stuff, just an Alt-Tab replacement that works.  (Have you ever tried to pick the word document you're looking for out of a list of 5 "they all look alike" thumbnails?  But I digress...)  On the other hand, I'll guarantee you there's no faster way to switch between windows, as long as you can remember part of title of the one you're looking for.  If you need more details on how to use or install it, just ask, and I'd sure like to know whether you find it useful or not (if only so I get some indication of how weird I am...)

(Sorry, I know it was a really bad pun...)

I'm still not understanding Searching and the Search Folders options.  I just created, for testing purposes, a directory structure like this on my D: drive:  First/Second/Third/Test.txt.

My D: drive has a folder on it called Backups, which contains a sync/backup structure for multiple folders on my C: drive (I use FileBack to maintain a few copies of certain things...).  So, I've created a Search Folder (in FaRR's Lists options) with these properties:  Name - D:\Backups (I used the folder selector to make sure there was no typo), Subdirectory Search Depth - 0, Score - -1000 (out of desperation).  Then, in FaRR, if I type "d:\first test", FaRR finds 28 items in 15 seconds, and the first 27 of them are in "D:\Backups\My Documents".  The last one is "D:\First\Second\Third\test.txt".  What am I doing wrong?

FWIW, if I type "D:\First" into FaRR, I get 2 items:  D:\First and D:\First\Second.  Same thing if I add a space after that string - the wheels don't come off until I type a non-space character after that...
17  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / AHK alternative to FarrAltTab on: August 20, 2010, 09:08:14 AM
I just thought I'd followup with what I ended up doing to replace the FarrAltTab plugin I was using, since I had to disable it to get FARR to load after the .NET 4.0 upgrade...

I hacked a version of an AutoHotKey script to my own tastes.  Basically, the real changes are to allow the Window list that pops up be in Z-order (last used, almost...) instead of alphabetical order.  This lets you type Alt-Tab-Enter to do the exact same thing as Alt-Tab (switch to the last activated window).  It's one more keystroke (Enter), but that's not too big a deal.

So, by using this AHK script, you can pick any window by typing enough chars to uniquely identify it, select it by number (if there's 10 or less windows that match what you've typed so far), etc.

I've attached it, in case anybody is looking for this sort of thing - trying to give back a little, you know...

It's FARRAltTab.  Wouldn't you know it - it's one of my most-used plugins...  Cry Angry Sad
19  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR won't start - help! on: June 25, 2010, 08:20:36 AM
Hi Mouser,

Running manually does the same thing.  I renamed the ini file - no change.

I renamed the Plugins folder, and it came up with the "Hello" msg in the system tray.  Exited and renamed my original .ini and ran again, loaded ok.

So it's clearly one of the Plugins, apparently.  The thing that worries me is that this update included .net updates.  I'm on W7 Ultimate.

Thanks for the help - awesome, sir...

20  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / FARR won't start - help! on: June 25, 2010, 08:08:09 AM
I just rebooted my laptop after a set of Windows updates from yesterday, and I got a message that "Find&Run Robot has stopped working", as it was booting up.  I reinstalled the latest version (same as the one I had), but no luck.

You KNOW my computer is completely useless without FARR, right?  HELP!

Thanks,

Mark

I use AltTab constantly on my W7 32-bit machine and have never had a crash that I could attribute to it.

Thanks again, Mouser - FARR easily gets my vote as the greatest time saver/utility program ever.  (Of course, I'd place Vimperator for FF second, so you know I'm strange...)
23  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012 on: March 01, 2010, 12:56:50 PM
Thanks very much for the new version!  One thing I've noticed is that, in the past, the first time I open FARR after a restart, it would take 5-10 seconds to initialize the first time I tried to use, during which time it indicated it was retrieving the previous launch history.  Now, it initializes almost instantly.

I noticed that you made some changes regarding searching, but the issue I reported here still seems to exist, at least on my machine with my configuration.

25  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR alt tab 2.0 beta on: February 03, 2010, 11:37:41 AM
Mouser, we talked about this one a couple times, but I was thinking about this as an approach and I'm wondering if this would be a lot of work:  Would it be possible to just have another option in FARR's scoring heuristics to allow scoring of windows?  That way, with a very high score placed on open windows, any text matches would always come to the top, and it would effectively make FARR the ultimate task-switcher...

(In other words:  BUMP!)  smiley
