Post New Requests Here / Yet another image viewer
« on: February 04, 2021, 05:03 PM »
Hi, what I'm looking for is an extremely simple idea. Not sure about the coding (or even if it is necessary).

I'd like to view a small .png (or.jpg/ .gif/ .bmp) file in a GUI free window (Ie. with no titlebar/ toolbars etc, just a clean 'canvas') via a command line... here's an example call.

c:/programs/picview.exe c:/piccies/picfile.png -200 -400

This will show a scaled version of the file (whatever the original size) in a 200 * 400 window/ canvas. The order of those parameters do not matter to me. Some files will look stupid at that size: the user will have to find the numbers that 'work'.

The gui could be exited by pressing 'escape', or better yet, by pressing it twice.
A left/right mouse click on the picture could be configured to do something useful: to trigger a program such as mspaint to open the picfile. A .ini file could be used for specifying these options.

It would preferably be portable and stealthy (I.e. Zip file download and all settings in the application directory).
I feel sure something like this must already exist, it's just that searching for such a thing is hard. Just about every image viewer has a gui?

Even the presence of a GUI is not a dealbreaker, I just don't want tons of distracting features...

Does anyone know of such a program?

--------------------------------------------------
To be honest, I have almost solved this. Just now, I checked on https://cli.portable...m/index.php?q=viewer and found http://www.schaik.com/png/visualpng.html.

Pros:
  • It does resize (stretch) very nicely, I hadn't thought to even ask!
  • It is portable

Cons:
  • Only works for .png files,
  • It does have a small gui,
  • It may not have command line options, (I haven't checked yet)

So it will suffice for now, (better than zooming out to a custom size in mspaint), but I still think the other features would be really cool...

Thanks in advance...

To me, Avira seemed more like a virus than many of the virii it protected against.

Yes, I'm coming around to that POV. What would you recommend?

(EDIT -deleted duplicated screenshot)

Is there no way to whitelist a file within Avira?

You would think so. I must admit, I'm getting more and more annoyed with Avira and other non-standard, simplyfied guis -I can't help wondering if there are more Avira tools installed than are shown in the Windows menu. One 'page' somewhere of the options -probably when I sent off the file for analysis, did not fit on my screen properly and therefore I'm guessing some controls -such as a save button were not shown. Clicking on the 'settings' button in Security gives me the following underwhelming set of options to change... "Language".    Amazing...

That looks great Skwire, but Avira just quarantined it (even though VirusTotal showed no problems). False positive, I'm sure, but I'm going to need some time to find a workaround to eventually test it!

The command that he put in his post can be run from the command line- have you tried that on the computer in question?

I'm glad you told me that -I didn't recognize it, wondered if it was a C call or something.

So, I tried it, it worked!

P.S.  I'm not fussy about how the title looks, but feel it should be shorter, something like...
original title [BATT:34%]

Hi c.gingerich, I'm afraid that is not working on Windows 8.1 (at least on my laptop).

On most windows with titles, I can see the title is appended with the characters "- [Battery life remaining: %]" (note that no number is shown before the % sign) before the original title-part is deleted one character at a time -at a rate of roughly one char a second. Therefore, after a few seconds, the windows' title is shown in WinLister as "- [Battery life remaining: %]" and of course there are many such windows, now with unhelpful names.

I'd upload some screenshots, but I'm not sure how to go about that... it will keep for now! Thanks for trying, perhaps other Windows 8.1 users can also try it and verify whether it works, as my system is far from standard! If one person benefits then, (assuming it WAS a quick hack), it would have been worth while.

There is a program by skwire called epCheck that downloads parts of the online database at https://thetvdb.com/, I can't really distinguish why that would be a suitable program, but this suggestion would not. Great idea, fred dred.

Hi folks,
There are a plethora of different battery indicator thingies out there (power circle and battery cat for example). But the problem with laptops is that you need to remember to ALT-TAB to the program to check the status of your battery -by the time you think to check, the ruddy thing has shut down or hibernated on you.

What I'm thinking of is something that will print the battery percentage in some form in the title bar of the current active window -it could be appended to the window's title or implemented as a kind of overlay (see Skrommel's TicTocTitle) for an example. In fact, it could even be incorporated as an option in that handy piece of freeware!

The (almost) ubiquity of the Windows titlebar on most software should ensure that the battery indicator level is foremost in the mind of the user -think of it as subliminal information!

I hope that is clear and an easy task...

Thanks for the quick reply

Yes, documentation is rather technical, but there have been very few requests lately about this tool, so I've assumed everybody is happy... :-[

I think you might have more people requesting help/features etc. if they could see a solid example of the tool in use. I'm still not sure about use-cases and if other people are unsure they probably wouldn't want to investigate without some sort of assurance that a) it won't hurt their system and b) it is fit for their purpose.

Yes, I know I'm just bleating and no help whatsoever! If I had the time I'd try and knock up some help-text you could incorporate in your web-page. Again though -the use of this seems too abstract (for me) at the moment...
I don't suppose you'd know if there was an app that could solve my problem (rather than using AHK which for me usually involves downloading sample code which spectacularly fails to work due to compatibility problems with the newest AHK version).

13
I love the idea of what this program does but right now I am very time-short and can't quite make out what exactly it does. Unfortunately this page and your website are very technical (and could use a fair bit of white-space for easier reading) but trying to find a good scenario for use for someone in a rush is very difficult. A youtube video and maybe a quick explanation/ walk-through regarding the use of a couple of specific applications, hotkeys and data files would help here.

For example, I would like to be able to control SMPlayer which is set with the '<-' and '->' cursor keys to jump back and forth and the "#" key which is set to pause/continue.
Ideally I'd like to be typing in OpenOffice Writer and press "#" to pause/continue the playback without the focus switching to SMPlayer or the '#' getting typed in OpenOffice Writer.
Can this be done? If so how? Which files will I have to create or edit to make it work and what should their contents look like? This high level sort of explanation is what I think your website lacks, though I'm sure it doesn't lack for technical information!!!

Thanks in advance for any help here.

Skrommel's Software / Re: Accents minor problem
« on: May 13, 2015, 05:19 AM »
I suspect the answer is to make Windows accept the AHK script interpreter as the default application for .ahk files (you probably have a text/ programming editor set as the default). This has security risks as you might double click an unknown .ahk file to edit it (instead of right clicking and selecting edit) and run it instead.

The other option is to create in your start folder a .lnk shortcut file to the AHK executable and pass the name of the script as a command line parameter.

I won't describe how to do this in detail as I suspect you are web savvy enough to check the AHK help file for option one and to google 'how to change default application for [insert O/S version here]' but if you do need further help, AHK version and O/s details would be handy.

P.S. - I don't know why the other scripts work but accents doesn't. Does it work normally when you double click on it???

This is working on Win8 and has a pretty accurate and readable display even in the ALT-TAB preview -unlike some clocks and other programs (gnash-gnash, moan-moan). I wish other programs could be so readily (to coin a word) glance-able.

As a feature request I would suggest the user could pick a different colour to show when the computer is plugged in and charging. So if the plug isn't switched on or the cable isn't firmly in -that would be obvious. I'm already so chuffed about the preview thing but that feature request would make it practically perfect!

Piriform ccleaner has an 'Uninstall' utility (click 'tools' icon) which starts up much faster than the Windows add/remove programs applet. Try it as it may not succumb to this MS bug. I'd definitely recommend an alternative tool such as this. Plus the other functions of the program are just as handy.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: collect files in a virtual folder
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:48 AM »
It looks like recursion is stopping short on my system. It does not dig enough. Is it possible to increase folder recursion number?

Also is it possible to create shortcuts based on parent folder`s name rather than from exe?
:) Just updated ShortCutter v1.1.

Changes:
- 20061209 - v1.1: Marks the shortcuts with modification date instead of creation date, removes shortcuts to missing files, updates modification date of all shortcuts.

Skrommel

Nice program (Shortcutter 1.1) but it doesn't seem to 'shortcut' files in the actual source folder itself, only in sub-folders (Ie. recursion seems to work except in the 'top-level' or 'specified' directory). Having said that I've not rigorously checked the lower folders. I'm using XP Home Ed.

Edit: I thought switching Recurse off should do the trick but it seems to still create shortcuts as if it was switched on. Strange. The Shortcutter.ini file has the line recurse=No as expected. Even quitting SC and restarting it does not change its apparent behavior.

A way of creating shortcuts to folders within -and including -the source folder is an obvious extension -you could allow *.folder as a mechanism for the user. I can't offhand think of another way to do this except maybe with a windows search. Which didn't work at all for me! Maybe in other versions of Windows it works better (oh for the grace of Windows 98).

18
Another approach, may be simpler, and works with other programs...

Search for the strings "Copy path to clipboard" "context menu" in a good search engine... Download and install a program or small .reg registry file to add a context menu "Copy path to clipboard" to do just that (inspect it / virus scan it for safety first). Then you can do just that in windows explorer or any list of icons (such as the open/ save menu dialogues of most applications). Easy, certainly works for me.

You could check out EndItAll by PC Magazine at pcmag.com

20
Have not tried it in the DOS world but will try and give you guys feedback. Thanks!

Well, is this topic closed, wetsmellydog?

21
As per tradition, what would you like to name this?

A collection (of people at least) can be called a party. So I suggest you call it (ahem) PartyTime!!!  :)

22
Page 9 of this thread shows no user content, only page structure and avatars (for me at least on Opera 10.63 & Win XP). Some bug on the servers perhaps?

23
I'm sorry you've had no other responses. Have you tried a simple batch file? I would guess the following...

1) If any file is transferred then they all will

2) A sufficiently long 'pause' command between each copy command might ensure that no one file is copied over before its predecessor (which might mess up your ordering.

3) If such a batch file works then a similar autoIT /autohotkey script could be attempted that could scale up/ down the 'pause's according to the size of the files being copied.
copy c:\letter.txt c:\document

So try a simple batch file for one file and then scale up for lots... and keep us posted.

24
Or you could do it the way I suggested in:

IDEA: Universal restore last position in any text when opened https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=23902.0

append the font parameters to the file name or save them in a separate file in the same folder. Or even simpler: use the first or last line if it exists. If you use more than one notepad, you have to customize the key commands needed to change the font per app.

You could (in later Windows versions at least) use ADS (Alternate Data Streams) but this may end up setting off warning bells in some security products.

I've just sent you a DC personal message re. help-file documentation. Ie. would you like some help with that?
