N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Fried Babelfish
« on: May 29, 2011, 10:05 AM »
Crap! :( I use Fried Babelfish regularly and love it. Bummer. But thanks for all that it's done for me in the past. Ford Prefect will not be pleased about this either.

General Software Discussion / Re: Texter (LifeHacker)
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:52 PM »
Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the skill to help with this. :onfire:  But I've been using Texter for at least a couple of years and can attest to its value. I sure hope that some of the clever coders here can lend a hand especially as Jeromy did a nice job of bragging about dc on the Lifehacker site.

Slightly off topic:
@Shades - The Total Copy website has not been updated since January 2005 and the author admits to several bugs that he's working on. Can you offer any comments on that from your experience? And do you know what the "LukiEdition XP" is?? Tnx.

5
Seems that for reasons know to him he prefers to use the Multi-Media keys with a modifier. I see now that's what he asked for. Whatever!

6
I'd still like to hear from anyone using it before I re-install - why needlessly mess with a sold setup (when I can let somebody else bork their system first!)  ;D
Zactly!!  I'll be waiting in the wings with you, Darwin  :beerchug:

7
Well... Xobni is now officially out of beta. I haven't used it since early last year - anyone using it regularly now and care to share insights with us?!
....... especially, have they reduced the overhead any?? I tried this when it first came out and like it but it was far too "costly" on resources.   :-\

VoluMouse. Nothing more to be said, really. Enjoy!!

9
Then there's Display Fusion which will do what you want and a whole lot more!

Does Gizmo read here? Can we/should we give him a heads up??   :tellme:

Perhaps so, Mouser. But I'm fully on-board with bgd77 and Darwin. I ALWAYS found several things of value and interest in Gizmo's newsletter and often printed it out for valuable 'waiting room reading' when taking my Mom to her various appointments. His annual subscription was a bargain at twice the price. One of the many aspects that I appreciated was that it was (for want of a better term) punchy: brief, on topic articles with plenty of links to follow up when desired. Windows Secrets is first and foremost so laden with advertising that it's a real pain to wade through. This also negates the practicality of doing a print out. More importantly the content is a fraction of the value (to me) as was Gizmo's newsletter. Time for the reset button, IMHO.   >:(

Experience reports ANXIOUSLY awaited on this one !! :tellme:

Ah! OK, I get it now. Seems to me that I once saw a utility that did what you want. But can't find/recall it now. Big help, right! This sounds like a job for our ace utility maker Skrommel.

Do you have the ballistic setting on your mouse properties set fairly high? If so, a quick "flick" of the trackball might throw the cursor to the other screen.

16
I either don't understand the question or don't understand the problem. If both monitors are connected to one (Windows) computer you should be able to just configure the display properties appropriately and move all around both monitors as though they were one. If they're on two different computers then you need Input Director. It's fee and it's fantastic!

Thanks to all. I guess that for $9 one can't go too wrong. I'll give it a shot also. I have a bunch of Protected AAC files that I want to convert and that task never gets to the top of the "round toit" pile as the manual technique is somewhat labour intensive. Curt's recommend weighs heavily toward the positive. Rah Curt!!   8)

[Point taken, Dormouse. But I often have spent too much time on "interesting" programs that I really don't have any use for. So it's kind of protecting my self from my worst enemy -me, as well  :-[ ... LOL]

[WOW, Carol. Thanks again!!]

18
Yes. Thanks, Carol. That's why I stopped watching that site. Worse is that you can't reinstall the app or use it elsewhere except "on the day". But I was asking about after the $9 upgrade.

19
Thanks for the tip! To cut to the bottom line (mine anyway) will it remove the protection from my legally bought and paid for iTunes AAC files so that I can convert them to MP3 without having to re-record (e.g. with Total Recorder or similar)? And, does the upgrade to Pro free you from the usual Giveaway Of The Day constraints of never being able to upgrade and/or reinstall the application?

Thanks for saving me a lot of digging around. So often these things lull you into thinking that they say what you want them to say and you have to read between the lines to find what it really says. Trusted personal recommend - such as you guys -is the best evidence!

I'll second both of your comments, Carol. You'd have to hav a lot more money than sense to need/want that package!

Zridling: I started laughing so uncontrollably while reading this thread at 0130 that I woke up my girl friend.
Thanks for the snark.

Humm. Gone in 60 seconds? The page says no longer available  :(

I wish I had known/realized the info in Curt's quote before I tried it. In addition to what that says it's a MONSTER on resources. Not for the faint of heart! :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Apps won't open?
« on: June 24, 2008, 06:35 PM »
It has been working for me for several months on three machines. It seems to do the job as advertised and without problems. It also answered the question that I sent into the black hole of Java Support and never got a reply: Do I have to keep all those old/previous versions hanging around? Seems that you not only don't need them but it's a liability to have them hanging around ... and using up a not inconsiderable amount of disc space!

Living Room / Re: Rest In Peace - George Carlin - 71
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:51 PM »
I second that emotion, Josh. Having been a fan and follower for almost as long as I can remember, I feel as though I've lost a personal friend. Along with his other attributes, Carlin was one of the clearest thinkers of our time (IMHO) especially in so far as seeing through BS and foolishness. His comedy made us laugh then seriously examine much of what we do ... or don't, e.g. protecting the rights of the fetus vs. the lack of support for the care of young children.

RIP, George, RIP :(
