PopUp Wisdom / Some REAL Wisdom
« on: September 03, 2017, 03:20 PM »
I made a few PopupWisdom books from the quotes on these two websites
azquotes.com
hinduwebsite.com
and would have offered to upload them, but then I read their "Terms". While the sites admit they have no copyright on those quotes (which are public domain), they nevertheless don't want to see their stuff copied and distributed publicly. That means, everyone would have to create their own books from such websites ("for personal use") which, of course, would be legal.

So, here's a little trick how to copy such stuff quickly for personal use (at first I made the mistake of copying each single quote by itself which was a LOT of work). This trick works especially great with the "azquotes" website mentioned above:

You can copy and paste all the quotes on a page at once (without those disturbing links and buttons in between those quotes that would require a lot of editing afterwards), by using an adblocker to hide all the disturbing elements (I used Adblock Plus together with its "Element Hiding Helper" add-on, but other adblockers, like e.g. UBlock, should work too). It needs to be done only once for one arbitrary quote, as all the elements are related. The disturbing buttons will disappear below ALL quotes and on ALL pages. Afterwards it's easy to highlight with the mouse (not with Ctrl+A, as that would highlight also irrelevant stuff) the entire relevant text of an entire page and to simply copy and paste it, in one go, page after page, into the PopupWisdom text file.

Personally, I thought it was fun to do. That way I got all the Vivekananda quotes (over 1700 quotes), all the Aurobindo, Krishnamurti, Meister Eckhart, Buddha quotes, etc. The complete "Thoughts and Aphorisms" by Aurobindo on "hinduwebsite.com" are easy to do (without the help of an adblocker), as there are no disturbing buttons and links in between the quotes that would need to get removed.

"azquotes.com" got a HUGE number of quotes (often stretching over dozens of pages) by a HUGE number of mystics, saints, saint wannabes, writers (talented and untalented), poets, "thinkers", scientists, politicians (good and evil), business men, singers, actors, pop-stars, etc. The quotes can all rather easily and quickly be copied into PopupWisdom in the way described above.

There are quite a few errors in many of the quotes (mainly punctuation errors, like unnecessary empty spaces, or missing empty spaces), probably brought about by the scanning process. Some might want to edit those errors. A few quotes are incomplete and can be completed by looking for the source elsewhere on the Web. A very few quotes are best removed as they make no sense at all. Probably those were quoted entirely out of context or were somehow mangled when they were scanned.

Right now I'm absolutely hooked on those Vivekananda quotes, and I keep checking them often every day. Thanks for providing a great piece of software that does exactly what I was looking for (took me quite some time and many searches on the Net until I found it, and I almost gave up, but finally I was lucky ;)).
