Hi,

Sorry i havent been more responsive in the forums lately. Anyway i just tried the latest version of FARR and had no issues with GP 1.1 on W7 64bit

Regarding the options popup issue. This is most likely happening when, for one reason or another, the GooglePlus.ini file is missing from the GooglePlus dir. Clicking "OK" on the popup should create a new GooglePlus.ini which should solve the issue unless there is some other issue going on. If you keep clicking "Cancel" however it will keep popping up the options after every keypress. Let me know if this does not work.

hypert: Not sure why GP isnt working for you. Only thing i can think of is that there might be some sort of conflict or issue with your aliases file. GP will definitely not search your computer and works by simply typing "gpw watchmen" to search the web, "gpv watchem" to search youtube for watchmen or even "imdb watchmen" to search imdb for watchmen.

definitely a minimalist version of the idea of actions that we've talked about for farr for a long time but i keep putting off in search of a unified nice user interface approach.

This might be better discussed in a new topic but if you are referring to performing actions (such as email, rename, delete, zip, open with, copy, etc..) on search results then my vote would go to some kind of file type system similar to how explorer handles context menus for different file types. This way you could customize actions for different file extensions or perhaps even for different file type groups (docs, videos, music, etc..).

As far as how to integrate this into the UI i would advocate a system whereby after finding the object you want to perform the action on you would hit "tab" and that would then display all the matching actions for that file type in the results window. You could then begin typing the name of the action and have farr filter the action results until you have the one you want and you hit enter to execute that action.

For example, currently in farr if you hit tab on almost any object the full path of that object appears in the search box with pretty much the same info in the results box. Using the suggestion above hitting tab on the same file would instead put farr into say "action mode" which would display all the avail actions for that object in the results window. Some actions such as email, rename would obviously require more then one step. In these situations farr would need to track which objects and actions it was performing and build a kind of breadcrumbs of commands.

As for how to visually indicate to the user what is going on you could:

Use a breadcrumb system within the search box where you have the something like Test.txt > email, similar to how launchy does, with each arrow > representing a different action/command within "action mode" which is traversed using either the esc key to go back or the tab key to go onto the next action.

screenshot_google.png

Another way would be to create an "info" display box right above (or inside) the search box with the breadcrumbs of pending actions similar to how an app called Dash does

Dash-UI4.jpg

Not sure how hard it would be to extract explorers context menu actions for each object type but that might be a good place to populate the action list. Im no expert but as far as i understand it windows stores all the actions for each object type in the registry with the name and command line needed to execute that action.

Taking the idea a little further you could also allow people to create and share action commands with a new section in the settings menu similar to how plugins are configured now. In this section you could also specify the order or default action for each file type as well as a hotkey for that action. This would be extremely cool because it would also allow people to create plugins for regular search results which is something i believe that current plugins cannot do.

While other methods such as action aliases work well I find that because you have to remember the exact name of each alias combined with the fact that they do not visually show the user what they do, unless there is a single result, make them a little difficult to use and hard to scale.

I really cant think of a more intuitive and user friendly way of adding actions to farr and while it might be a bit of change in how farr works it would be well worth it imho.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How do I uninstall FARR?
« on: January 09, 2010, 12:00 AM »
the easiest thing to do in such cases (with farr and any program that is on the add/remove list), believe it or not, is to reinstall the program, and then go back to the add/remove programs and choose to uninstall.

and give farr another shot while you're at it. cant imagine why anyone would want to uninstall farr  ;D

I had been looking at the FARR plugin "GoogleSuggest", and someone suggested (no pun intended) that I try GooglePlus out.
So I installed it just now, and it runs fine and I think it's a great plugin.

However, I would like the option to be able to feed my search parameters through to Google Desktop and so search my local hard drive.
Is there some way I could do this?

GooglePlus is based on their web search api which is different from gds which the plugin does not support. I dont use gds myself but would recommend either of the Everything or Locate plugins which work extremely well if you dont need to search the contents of files. Phitsc also made a really cool Windows Search plugin which i use to search in outlook and emails in thunderbird.

I declare that gridmode shall be implemented in 2010.

Woohoo  Hopefully, that means earlier in the year rather then later  8)

Regarding the <currentselection> keyword basically what i am suggesting is a keyword you could insert into the "Text for Search Edit Box" when adding a hotkey that would be replaced with the currently selected result in Farr. This way i could setup a hotkey like:

igo <currentselection><enter> - which would launch the selected result in farrs internal browser. This is also especially usual because ie can render a lot of different file types turning this into a type of quick view browser where you can have a pdf file selected, hit your hotkey and it would show up in farr!

Other natural keywords could be setup to email a file to someone, zip a file, etc..

Find And Run Robot / 2010 Farr Wishlist
« on: January 07, 2010, 08:34 PM »
Well, with the new decade comes a new opportunity to begin again the quest for new features in my favorite windows app :P. So with out further ado here are my most desired features for Farr:

1. Gridmode - the now infamous gridmode is, along with the next request, the feature i would most like to see in Farr. Basically the ability for a plugin to specify the number of columns it can output as well as their values is something i see almost every existing plugin being able to take advantage of. I would also love to upgrade GooglePlus to use such a feature and can only imagine what future plugins might look like. A nice addition would also be some basic html formatting support.

2. Hotkey Upgrade - while i suggested a number of hotkey improvements in this thread, the most critical/powerful single feature would be to add support for a <currentselection> keyword. With such a keyword you would be able to setup all kinds of cool keywords to do things like email a file, zip a file, view a url in farr, etc.. and with all the plugins and aliases available to farr this could be one awesome little addition.

3. Option to remove the current directory as the first result in folder browsing mode. Most times i find it distracting and would love to be able to remove it.

thx as always for such a great app

7
would love to implement this functionality but unfortunately google has not created an api for their dictionary service yet.

8
Sounds good. Thx

Is there still any place to download this plugin? Link in first post is broken.

10
Updated to version 1.1. See first post for details.

Mouser,

Its great to see you adding new functionality to FARR and i thought now would be as good a time as any to reiterate my farr wishlist  ;D

1. Gridmode (the one and only as pleaded for by developers here and here)
2. Extended Hotkey Support and functionality discussed here
3. Expanded flexibility for plugin writers to specify how and in what format results are displayed. For example letting the plugin determine what display style, report columns are displayed etc. Also largely tied to gridmode
4. Expanded Alias and search History as hotly debated here

As always thx again for an amazing and indispensable piece of free software!!!!

12
GSz, thx for kind words. GooglePlus is based on their web api which is different from gds which is not supported. I am hoping to release a new version soon which has some minor updates however for a similar gds solution i would recommend Vrokolos's great Everything plugin.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Reason for the "history list" upper limit ?
« on: December 02, 2008, 03:28 PM »
I will try to fix this by saving the history list to a separate file -- which will also speed up loading+saving of config files.

Sweet! Any chance you could do the same for the search string history which is currently a little limited.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Plugin related feature requests
« on: October 26, 2008, 03:38 PM »
I was also hoping that gridmode might have been a few weeks out instead of months but to be honest im continually amazed at how fast and responsive you are whilst managing so many different projects.

1. It would be good for plugins if they could query (and possibly set) certain FARR options. A couple of examples:
 - With the option 'Hide when focus is lost' set FarrMilk currently can't complete the authorisation process. It would be good if the plugin could temporarily disable that option and put it back once authorisation is complete, or at least tell the user to do so.
 - I'm currently assuming that the user has 'Max. entries to display in normal results' set to 9 (and specify so in the help file). But if the plugin could query this value, it could present certain results in a more dynamic manner, i.e. only using the first (Max - 1) results and make the last one a 'More' entry.
 - Another requirement is that the user is showing the Location column. Well, the plugin works without this but it wouldn't be obvious to the user what he misses. So I think it would be good if the plugin could at least tell the user that he could enable the Location column to enhance his user experience.

Have to agree with all points mentioned above and i have often times wished that plugins could be able to specify at least which columns/rows are displayed and perhaps even which display style (large vs report).

It would also be great if these fields could be turned on/off for each result. For example certain options such as those used to navigate a plugin or simply to display status info may not need the same fields displayed as other results. Would definitely tidy the display up a little make using the plugin more intuitive.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Plugin related feature requests
« on: October 21, 2008, 12:13 PM »
phitsc all great ideas that i would love to see implemented. I think a lot of your requests could be satisfied when Mouser releases the long awaited gridmode :D. Not sure how far away it is but ideally this will give plugin writers complete control of which columns/rows they can display and what their content is.

I had also asked Mouser about cell formatting and i believe he had said something about support for bold, italics, and underline although i could be wrong. It would be great to be able to specify color, font size etc.

The holy grail would be some type of gridmode that supports html cells. As czechboy mentions this is somewhat possible using javascript and html mode which he used for his Table Data plugin. The only limitation with this technique is its limited interface with FARR itself. For example it would be great to be able to scroll through results with the up/down arrow keys, be able to launch or perform actions on a result etc.. I'm sure this is possible using html/js but it might require some work.

16
I think it's not an FScript problem. If I remember correctly I tried to use it as well (in list mode, with the native plugin interface) and it didn't work. I think it's meant to be used in memo mode only (likewise onIdleTime and the new triggermethod parameter in onSearchBegins). But don't take my word for it. (not sure if that's the correct expression now ;) )

That's what i was afraid of. Hopefully when Mouser has some time he can look into expanding the hotkey functionality similar to what i mentioned in this post:

...

I would also imagine that you would need to add an option to specify the scope of the hotkey i.e. global or local. Local hotkeys would only work within FARR whereas global ones would work from anywhere. This could also be expanded to work with plugins similar to how a plugin alias file works. Plugins could then specify hotkeys in a hotkey file that only works within their plugins and have certain plugin specific functions. Keywords/variables could be created for certain actions that could be shared like aliases.

Would be great to give plugins some control over hotkeys that could be managed from the same ui as other hotkeys. This way users could change hotkeys to sort their needs.

17
phitsc: thanks for the update  Great timing too as im just finishing up a small update to GoogePlus.

On a related note does anyone know if its possible to use onReceiveKey() in normal mode? Per ecaredec's readme it works great in memo mode but i cant get it to work in normal result mode?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR: New feature: User Variables tab
« on: October 09, 2008, 12:06 PM »
Sounds interesting, i can see using this for global user defined variables like name, email address, etc..

Any other features we can look forward to in the upcoming release like gridmode or hotkey variables ;D

19
I think settings.exe is small autohotkey utility which presents an options dialog to the user.

Correct. Settings.exe is a autohokey script converted into an exe by Autohotkey.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New plugin: FARR Remember The Milk 0.0.1
« on: September 26, 2008, 04:50 PM »
WOW!!! Definitely one of the best executed plugins i have seen. Great job!

Cant wait to see what you come up with next, maybe an rss reader  8)

21
Dimsy after reinstalling the plugin do you have an "icon" folder in your C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\GooglePlus\ folder? If not then make sure when you are extracting the zip file you check the option to keep the directory structure within the zip file or a similar option.

22
Based on your screenshot above it seems that during install there was no icon folder created and instead they are all in the GooglePlus folder. Please re-install the plugin from the first post in this thread. You can overwrite the existing installation but after install most of your icons should be in C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\GooglePlus\icons\. That should do it.

23
I havent seen this error before. Can you tell me if you have an ico called GooglePlus.ico in your Farr\plugins\GooglePlus\icons folder? Also when do you get this error when you try and open the GooglePlus options dialog or when you click on the plugins button?

24
I like how the UI show what to type next. Ex when I type email the tip is email (message) (to contact)

yes this is something farr should have, some kind of hint about how to use the command.

This is a great idea!! I would opt for something directly above/below the query box. This would definitely come in handy -, especially with some of the more advanced plugins being developed for farr.

Find And Run Robot / Ubiquity
« on: August 27, 2008, 02:20 PM »
Just came across this today and have got to say that it looks pretty impressive. It does a lot of things farr does and a lot of things i wish farr did and being a mozilla product its browser integration is amazing.

I think once Mouser adds the new grid mode, hopefully with image and multiline support :D, farr will be able to do this and a lot more. Its still in early beta stage but nevertheless i think there are a lot of things we could uh.. get ideas from  8)
