Living Room / Re: Should I swtich from w7 32 bit to w7 64 bit?
« on: April 11, 2010, 06:32 PM »
Hi Masubi,
Why don't you list a number of "must have" programs you want to run on a 64 bit system so members already on 64 machines can give you a definite aa'yes" or "no"

You may laugh at your granddad all you want , but consider the availability of calculating devices to general public, or students: log tables (if you know what they are), slide rules, mechanical calculators known as Comptometers, twice the size of a typewriter and generally available in businesses only, first electric calculators desk models only, then pocket calculators, then home computers such as Commodore 64.

I bought my first electronic computer at K-mart around 1971, when they firs became available to general public. It was the size of external DVD recorder, cost me $129 and lasted about 18 months.

Living Room / Re: Cleaning Inside the Case
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:21 PM »
Never open my case, except to add memory. Never saw any dirt inside, everything is gleaming clean. I change computers about every four years. The last one I gave to my granddaughter who had it for eighteen months now, the machine is about five and a half years old.

My motto is " If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

How do you know when to clean your computer?. Is it overheating, some malfunction that makes you think dirt is the problem, some time schedule, or is your machine saying "Clean me, clean me", or are you just bored?.

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for small, 4-port USB hub?
« on: December 24, 2008, 10:24 PM »
I have a Linksys 4 port hub that has a provision for its own power supply. I did not buy the power supply since the hub is for my laptop only, and I only plug in memory sticks into it. Had it three years, no problem.

In addition to Acronis True Image there is also Macrium Reflect and Paragon Drive Copy. All thee are quite good and full of features. Recently Paragon was available for $20 on some special deal direct from the company. I got an e-mail offer because I used Paragon Partition Manager for years. Macrium has a free version that does full partitions only. Paid version will backup and restore files and folders as well, as do the other two programs. That was also recently available as a one day deal for $20
for Iconico bulletin subscribers.

Macrium seems a little faster in backup and restore than ATI and I quite like it, but so far have only restored one image. Went well.

I agree with 40hz that ATI V11 is too bloated, and for me full of features I will never use. I stick with it because upgrades to new versions used to be reasonable. I think they are readying a new version.

General Software Discussion / Re: CCleaner Or Not?
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:33 PM »
I use a combination of Revo Uninstaller for uninstalling Apps, and CCleaner for daily cleaning of garbage. CCleaner is highly customizable, but I use it in the default mode, and it is much more effective than the Windows disk cleaner, and much faster. It does have a registry cleaning function as well.

On the whole he got an amazing number of predictions right. May not have thought of microprocessors, but predicted events than microprocessor made possible.

Great find.

Customs officials here and abroad have always had the right if inspection and seizure of personal property on entry into their country. If you think US Customs are bad try some of the other countries. They practically strip you and even look in your wallet in some countries. Facts of life. At lest in the US you can seek redress in court.

Living Room / Re: The Root of Game Piracy

Piracy is just stealing. Putting a fancy name on it is like trying to pick up a turd by the clean end.

What can you do with above mentioned products that you cannot do in EverNote?.

Read somewhere that V3 is to be released on June 17. Anyone else heard that?.

Living Room / Re: The 10 most annoying programs on the Internet
« on: June 13, 2008, 11:03 PM »
Why is Windows Update annoying?. I have mine set on automatic, download only but ask permission to install. If I am too busy doing something else I refuse until I am ready.

Shadow Protect ought to be good, it is twice the price of Acronis, or three times if yuo use version upgrades.

General Software Discussion / Re: ESET Smart Security
« on: November 23, 2007, 01:24 AM »
Have used Eset Smart Security since mid June this year on Windows XP laptop and Vista Desktop. Now have fully licensed suites on both computers. Small footprint, non intrusive software that does indeed learn fast from user experience. No popups!. Now that's a change from Zone Alarm, Outpost, Kerio, Kaspersky and Comodo, all of which I have used and discarded, mainly for the reason of excessive popups and poor learning skills.

General Software Discussion / Re: What’s Your Backup Strategy?
« on: November 23, 2007, 12:35 AM »
Drive C backed-up weekly, using Acronis True Image. I do it manually, even though an automatic backup can be set up. Just most convenient for me personally to do it this way.

Data drive backed up periodically, depending on frequency of use. MS Money program backed up after every use. All my sensitive personal files are on an encrypted virtual drive.

All the above backups are to an external HD.

Save every downloaded program in a "Downloads" folder. When it gets to be aroud 500-600MBs I put it  on a CD and start again. Having software even two or three years old, particularly freeware saves a lot of trouble. You can search the web of course but sometimes that can take a long time.

I think reasons one to four are not true. Most PC users know of, or heard of Linux.

I think there is only one reason for lack of Linux popularity, considering it is free : It is not user friendly.

General Software Discussion / Re: RANT: High Software Prices!
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:17 PM »
In perspective:
1. Lotus 123 cost around $129, 20 years ago. Excel probably costs about the same now, for a much superior software. Lotus made you use their program disk every time you wanted to use the program, that is after you installed it. Having to install a Key once on software installation does not seem so bad, does it?.
2. No use ranting at prices and quoting some piece of Hollywood fantasy as your guide. Vote with your feet - there is a legal freebie for most software you would want to use, in most cases several freebies.
3. Cost of goods was never a reason for stealing , and piracy is not caused by software pricing. Pirates do it because they can, and it will always be cheaper that any price. Countries like China and others condone piracy because it is a cheap way for them to catch up technologically.

RegEditX - simple and trouble free. Good search function. Free.

Living Room / Re: password-protect external HD (USB)?
« on: January 27, 2007, 06:19 PM »
NTFS drives are encryptable, but not automatically encryupted. If you use XP Pro it has an ability to encrypt, but you have to do it. XP Home does not. You have to use an outside program such as True Crypt, or a host of other freebies.
I move my USB NTFS Hard Drive between my desktop and laptop without any problem and can read and write on either computer.
If you give your neighbor an un-encrypted NTDF drive he will be able to read it on his computer.

Living Room / Re: Agnitum Outpost 4 .... dumped

Dumped Outpost 4 from my laptop for the same reasons Carol Haynes did. Too sluggish and too intrusive.
