Living Room / Re: Intercepted Email?
« on: February 27, 2017, 01:39 PM »
If you email is intercepted without regard to password, isp etc. my question is, how do you know this is happening?  And where do you think the interception point is?  I don't quite understand what you are asking.

I know it's happening because I receive strange and different looking stuff from my bank.  Mostly trying to get me to click a 'check your balance' button.  I clicked one once and was sent to a logon page that was totally different than the real thing.

Some of my usual (yearly) Payment Confirmation Emails don't get delivered.  These don't come from my bank.

I guess what I'm asking is... what else can I do.

I suppose there are malicious programs for everything these days. :-\

Changing providers, addresses, passwords... does nothing.

Just use 1 laptop and no cell phone.

Any suggestions?

Was down for me too, longer than those hours

What I meant was:

This non-connection happened was first noticed around 12 pm Florida time... or around 5 pm in the UK.

The only positive thing is that this may be the kick in the pants we needed to finish moving to a new cms/server.

FWIW: From my POV there are a couple of positive things.

The bad connection wasn't caused by my computer and I'm not as inept as I thought I was... this time. :)

Google Chrome couldn't connect to DC yesterday.  :(

This non-connection happened around 12 pm Florida time... or around 5 pm in the UK.

Seems to be back to 'normal' today.  :)

Just wondering if anyone else couldn't connect yesterday.  :tellme:

Can switching browsers speed-up your machine?

I downloaded Chrome and made it the default during installation... but what else changed?

Now my machine seems to startup faster and perform better... or is this just wishful thinking?

I guess this could also be a sign that my old IE9 was highjacked?

I forgot to mention that I noticed the 'speed-up' the following day.  It was after installing Chrome but before going online.

My apps opened faster.  The 'My Pictures' window opened instantly, right where I had left it.

Back in my BC (before Chrome) days... the My Pictures window would open almost anywhere and sometimes it would be smaller.

I think something was changed... for the better.  :)

P.S.  I love the way Chrome shows my 'DC post-previews' instantly! :-*  IE9 would kick-back and think about it sometimes.  ;D

Living Room / Re: SAS updates continue after expired subscription
« on: December 17, 2016, 09:01 AM »
Thought I would update this a bit.

The SAS Application updates continue after expired subscription as well.  :)

Unlike most people, I presume, I watch the update process happen and today I got a fleeting glance of the app update along with the virus definitions.

It happened too quickly for a screen shot... maybe next time.

Is there a difference between continuing with this and switching to the free version?  I can understand if it is already installed and both code and db are updating, not switching for the sake of switching to the free.  But I am just curious.

Not switching is my choice but I have never used the free version so I don't know if there is a difference.  Should there be?

BTW  You have said "I have been using the free version of SAS for years."  Have you been getting app updates too?

Sometimes curiosity kills the app.  If it aint broke...   :)

Could also be a good name for a search engine that returns copious information unrelated to the query in question.  :)

Google does this occasionally, if my guessing the 'right' keywords isn't good enough.  :)  How about fling+Google... flingle?

Sounds cool to me.

Aren't some words relating to anything these days... just made-up?

Yeah, one that comes to mind is WiFi.  Supposedly it does not really stand for anything.  The guy who coined the name probably was a HiFi enthusiast back in the day when they had dedicated HiFi stores.  :)

Yes, it doesn't really stand for anything.  But WiFi is easier to remember than "IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence".  Short read.

BTW  Word-of-mouth is very unreliable.  Around 30 yrs ago I read something about yin yang and finally saw the correct spelling. ;D  Better late than...

So... are current flash drives the convertable roofs of the computer world?  Cool and fun  when they're new but begin to leak later on?
Heh heh.  I always wanted to try one of those "hard top" convertibles that fold up but are not so obviously convertibles.  They look better and don't attract slashers.

Maybe the best way to extend the life of your data is to walk to the next aisle and get an external hard drive.

Or just keep migrating to the next technology before the shelf life of the old runs out.  We survived floppies.  I think we'll survive flash drives.  :)

Edit:  Hmm, floppy drive and flash drive... seems like we have to think of another removable storage device that starts with "fl."

How about fling?  Could pertain to lifespan or how it's treated when it wears out.

n. - A usually brief attempt
n. - The act of flinging
v. - Throw with force or recklessness
v. - Throw or cast away

The wear seems to be caused at the atomic-level.   Quotes from here.   Short read... if you know your acronyms.

NAND flash stores the information by controlling the amount of electrons in a region called a “floating gate”. These electrons change the conductive properties of the memory cell (the gate voltage needed to turn the cell on and off), which in turn is used to store one or more bits of data in the cell. This is why the ability of the floating gate to hold a charge is critical to the cell’s ability to reliably store data.

When written to and erased during the normal course of use, the oxide layer separating the floating gate from the substrate degrades, reducing its ability to hold a charge for an extended period of time.

So... are current flash drives the convertable roofs of the computer world?  Cool and fun 8) when they're new but begin to leak later on?

Maybe the best way to extend the life of your data is to walk to the next aisle and get an external hard drive.   :)

Wait, what's the point to defrag a flash drive anyway?

You never want to defrag a flash drive.  Flash memory wears out.  And defragging uses up reads and writes from the flash drive's lifetime.

How can something with no moving parts wear out?

Wait, what's the point to defrag a flash drive anyway?

I mean, it's not like fragmentation really has any effect on access times for non-mechanical drives... so unless perhaps you plan on making partitions on that drive… ?_?

However, if you still want an answer then: "Sure, why not? As long as you have a defrag program that can run on those devices and access the usb drives..."

Thank you, ConstanceJill.

A total stranger asked me this.

I thought it was possible but a little knowledge about anything is dangerous so I just shrugged and changed the subject.

Just glad I didn't answer after reading all the replies here.

Could a cell phone, or a tablet, be used to defrag a flash-drive?

Similar to using a separate VHS rewinder instead of the VHS recorder?

You would have to prove intent to panic. There would have to be mass hysteria.

If I had bothered to tape TWC's Hurricane Matthew 'show', from beginning to end, I could probably prove intent to panic.

As far as mass hysteria is concerned.  Who's to say there wasn't?  Maybe not in S. Florida but possibly further up the coast?

Scaring one woman to death isn't a case.

How many people have to die for it to be a case?  Ten?  Fifty?

This kind of thing falls squarely on the 'Good Samaritan Act'.  You cannot be charged with giving too much aid... only not enough.

Dayna.

You can't be charged with giving too much unreliable aid?
TWC's Cone of Probability kept showing Matthew skirting the coast up to N. Carolina then taking an abrupt right turn and heading back toward Bermuda.
Only after Matthew made landfall, around S. Carolina, did TWC stop showing that illogical right-turn-graphic.

I bet there wasn't a bottle of water, a can of food, a battery or a piece of plywood to be had in Bermuda.

The Weather Bunny parody brought back memories of simpler time.  Though all 3 of my news/weather channels had zero women... men only.

I liked the ones where the woman had to write on the glass backwards.  They were standing behind a glass weather map with a white crayon.  For the viewers to read what they wrote they had to write it on the glass backwards.  Not only that but often they wore outfits similar to a magician's assistant.

Everything backwards.  Right to left.  Sounds difficult for any gender.  :(
