I think I am going to have to start making file encryption apps.  8)

How can we be sure that components/libraries/tools we use don't have backdoors?

I was a Zone Alarm user before switching to Agnitum Outpost, now I am thinking going back to Zone Alarm.
I am also considering Spy Shelter Firewall and Windows Firewall Control.

Redemption of an upgrade discount invalidates your previous Directory Opus licence.

Deal breaker for me.

Strange, I have v11 running on my main machine and my old v10, (that I upgraded to v11), running on another both say they are licensed and the v10 keeps telling me that it is the current v10 version and that I can upgrade to v11, (ie. it has internet access, still checks for updates, and does license verification).

All I can say is, the upgrade didn't invalidate my previous v10 license but it does stop me from trying to upgrade that v10 license again.

The License Manager shows that the main program license "Never expires":
 (see attachment in previous post)

Thanks for your info.
This is what I saw when I tried to upgrade :

Hmm...

How about a good but basic standalone bookmark manager. Ideally one that stored its data in a text or xml file. Most of the old ones have either disappeared or are no longer actively developed. Or they have everything plus the kitchen sink included. I'd just be looking for folders in a tree, the site name, site URL, description/note field, and maybe be allowed some category tags. Hot key popup and the ability to capture the URL of whatever page is currently displayed in the browser would be a definite plus.
i just had a 30 minute discussion on this yesterday!
I totally support this idea.  I'll add:
simple syncing with all devices and browsers, ideally no plugins needed.

And this feature, which is very unrealistic, but would be awesome:
ability to search ONLY in your bookmarks for keywords.  Or just the sites that are bookmarked.  Man, I would love that.

I would like to add too:
syncing with online services: pinboard, diigo or xmarks

@IainB - what is Bazqux charging these days? I visited their website but couldn't find any pricing info.

Pricing info is in FAQ page.

Pricing?
You can pay $19 or $29 annually, or $99 for lifetime subscription.

Not a desktop software, gSyncit is a Microsoft Outlook add-in that sync Outlook with Google account.

Hi Sujay,
I can not comment on your site. Keep getting this message :

"Spam Free Wordpress could not retrieve the password from the server. It may be necessary to do one, or all, of the following. Turn on the Old Password Fields option, turn off Nonce Security, or to turn on Generate Comment Form."

So there are no plans at all to drop the XYplorer lifetime license. It works great! But it will get more expensive (because currently it is just too cheap for the value).

Hi DonL,

So sad finally you drop the XYplorer lifetime license.
Why not just increase the price?

I am an owner of a key for DrawPlus X4, and my upgrade price is exactly the same as this full version offer y2kusuma is linking to.

Sometimes discounted price is lower than the upgrade price, we just have to know where to look.

General Software Discussion / MagicRAR
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:25 PM »
Anyone here knows about MagicRAR?

Just received an email announcing MAgicRAR release, another compression software. I think it's a new software, never heard of it before, but the version number is already 5.0. Googling only show search result to their site, for now.

Daemon Tools has signed up for BitsduJour, but no promotion yet. http://www.bitsdujou...suggest/suggest=903/

I wonder should I take this Spring Sale, or wait for BitsDuJour deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if this happens again with Windows8 & Office 2012 -> Ultra Recall v5

I asked Kyle from Kinook about this on Bitsdujour. He replied there will be updates for Windows 8 & Office 2012 , not v5 upgrade.

I'm really interested in this Bitsdujour deal, but I can not buy because no option for PayPal payment and no response from Kyle.

So far, I have found three meaning of lifetime license :

1. Lifetime upgrades
2. Lifetime usage (Stepshot)
3. Lifetime of machine (Bitdefender)

Always read the fine print.

Hi guys,

What do you think about FTP in Directory Opus?
Strange, Top Ten Reviews says FlashFXP is a discontinued product, http://ftp-software-...w.toptenreviews.com/

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:35 PM »
@y2kusuma:
From what I read I get the impression you first have to install WinRAR 4.01, use the license to register that specific version and then freely download/install updates.

I did as you suggest. It doesn't work.

Just had a response from winRar:

Please note that in the past we have had several promotion campaigns, offering WinRAR version-specific licenses with significant price discounts. For users who have bought such a license, the lifetime upgrade text is no longer valid and to avoid confusion we have taken it out from our websites.

For all the other WinRAR customers, who have purchased a regular license (even if the purchase has been made in 2005 or 2003 for example), we still offer free upgrades and updates. There are no indications that this policy will change in the near future.

Clear enough!

Seems they have not taken any promotions out from their websites. If you go to their site, click buy now button, the shopping cart always includes promotion from Panda Antivirus Cloud. There is a promotion with Nova Backup also.

And there is not any mention at all about promotion and 'version specific' license in their site, in email, anywhere.

I *feel* certain that WinRAR does not offer lifetime keys, because even the "1-year of maintenance, including the right to upgrade (within that year)" is $6.14 extra!:

rarlab.com doesn't offer any "insurance" by the way, while win-rar.com adds the "WinRAR Maintenance" package to your shopping cart automatically... neither of the sites specifically mention anything about the lifetime for licenses, though.

That's why I emailed them first to ask if they still offer lifetime upgrades. And they clearly states they still offer it.

I also ask in second email about Maintenance Package :

"Thank you for your answer. If so then what does maintenance package-upgrade assurance mean? It says that I get latest version during 1 year period. Is there any fine print that I missed?"

The answer :

"The Maintenance Package guarantees upgrades and priority support. As I mentioned previously, our private customers who purchase a license are provided upgrades either way. The maintenance funds go primarily into product development and are generally oriented toward business customers."

@y2kusuma - See if you can email Burak Canboy and ask him about it. That's the top of the chain for WinRar.

Thanks Renegade, but I don't know his address.

I decided to buy a WinRAR license but before I made my purchase, I emailed [email protected] if they still offer lifetime upgrades. Here is the reply :

"Thank you for contacting WinRAR!

It has always been our policy to offer our licensed private users free
upgrades. There is no indication this policy will change in the
future."

So I bought it, but when I tried to register WinRAR 4.10 Beta 5 with the attached registration file, the registration failed. I emailed support immediately and this is the reply :

"Hello,
this 'version specific' license needs WinRAR 4.01 to run.
It will not accept any newer version of RAR / WinRAR.
If not already done, download and install WinRAR 4.01"

What??? It doesn't look like lifetime upgrades license to me. Not register, even on the same major version. I demand my lifetime license, but two days have passed and still no response. Now I'm thinking to claim a refund with Paypal.

I still believe in lifetime licenses, I have those from PowerArchiver, TrueLaunchBar, Axialis and recently Listary Pro.
WinRAR? Never again.

Sorry that Virtual Disk is no longer being maintained and is not available for ordering any more.

Thank you Curt. It makes me wonder will Listary suffer the same fate. Hope not. I hate it when a good software discontinued or abandoned. Remembering Onfolio, Musicmatch Jukebox, Encarta, MS Money, Palm OS ....
