I've been a ToDoist user for the last few months and like it very much. Cross platform - Windows, iOS, OS X, Android. They have extensions for both Chrome and Firefox. Can also email tasks to it. Free, but some advanced features may require subscription.

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple donut chart software?
« on: October 22, 2015, 02:38 PM »
There's an online app called Plotly that might be able to do what you want.  I think you can create one "private" chart for free, but there's a monthly fee if you want to make "public" charts or more private charts.  It does let you export charts in a variety of graphic formats, and you can export the data in a csv format.

I was able to make a "donut" chart by making a pie chart and using one of the "Trace" options to put a hole in it. :)

My 2014 Camry.

Bought this about a year ago after driving Honda Accords for several years. Honda's were great, but when the last one was getting near 200,000 miles, I wanted a vehicle I could take on longer road trips with more confidence I would get there. Our 2 youngest daughters are in college - one about 100 miles south of here, the other about 165 miles north, so some weeks we're on the road quite a bit to get to concerts (one in choir, the other in band), family weekends, etc. This one gets about 26 mpg around the city, and 33-34 mpg on the highway.

Also drive a 2010 Honda Odyssey van. Very comfortable, lots of room.

Long time lurker - very occasional poster. However, TODAY is my own 10-year anniversary with DonationCoder. Signed up on September 23, 2005. Hard to believe it's been that long, but have really enjoyed my frequent visits to the site, and the camaraderie and great information one finds here.  Keep up the great work!

I think TopStyle does what you want, but not free.

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot Captor in Switzerland
« on: March 23, 2015, 10:10 PM »
Screenshot Captor was featured on Libellules today. This is a French language software blog in Switzerland.  I visit it regularly and often find software I haven't seen on other sites. One of the comments also made a reference to LaunchBar Commander. Chrome browser seems to do a good job of translating the site.

This is so silly it just makes me smile.

There's a recent article in MIT Technology Review about some new outliner and writing applications (Fargo, Editorially, Quip, etc.) . They seem to be pretty much totally browser/cloud based. Being an old-school guy (got my first PC in 1980), I'm not sure how I feel about not having my data and applications on my own PC. Nevertheless, the article suggests that there is a lot of development ongoing for these types of applications.

I visit Libellules.ch pretty regularly. Often find software there that I don't see on other sites.

I think the site is in Switzerland and is displayed in French, but Google Chrome seems to do a pretty good job of translating.

To all of you who claim you don't give a fsck... This is actually what not giving a fsck looks like.   That or a train wreck.  Your pick.

What a surprise!  His outdoors dance appears to be in front of a sign welcoming motorists to Woonsocket, Rhode Island - a town about 25 miles from where I was born and raised.  Didn't know this guy, though.

Maybe this should have been posted to the Gadget Weekend forum, but, alas, I could not comply with rule #4.

Living Room / Periodic Videos by Brady Haran
« on: June 24, 2013, 08:55 PM »
For the last few months I've been watching and enjoying a lot of educational YouTube videos produced by the Australian independent film-maker and video journalist, Brady Haran. These are short videos about computers, mathematics, physics, chemistry, language, philosophy, and other topics.

It appears Brady has moved to the University of Nottingham in the UK, and many of his videos are produced with the assistance of faculty from that institution.

Perhaps many of the regular visitors and contributors to DonationCoder are familiar with these videos, but I don't see any references to them in the forums and thought they might be of interest.

Living Room / Peer Review and the Scientific Process
« on: April 14, 2013, 03:11 PM »
Over the last couple of weeks I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos on science and mathematics-related subjects. Most of these have been made by Australian-born video journalist and film-maker Brady Haran - many in conjunction with scientists and mathematicians at the University of Nottingham.

Brady_Haran.jpg Brady Haran

This morning I watched one of the videos on his Test_tube.jpg Test Tube web site.

The video is about a breakthrough in the field of "atomic switches" by physicist Phil Moriarity and his team, but what I found interesting and important was Professor Moriarity's discussion about the absolute requirement for peer review in the scientific process.  This discussion starts at about the 8:43 point in the video.

I work in an industry where opposition groups bring forth so-called "research" or "evidence" that has not undergone this peer review process, and don't seem to understand why our whole scientific process depends on it.
