Living Room / Re: Apple is Still Apple - Sue After Stealing...

I'd like to patent a rectangle with rounded corners

My phone (LG Cosmos) is also rectangular with rounded edges - which phones aren't might I ask. It also has a menu which is just a grid of icons. When I look at most of my carrier's phones (Verizon), many fit that description. Maybe Samsung should start making phones shaped as trapezoids and circles.

I use WinRAR for its speed and ease of use, but I also have the PowerArchiver Free version installed as well - They recently released a free version at http://www.powerarchiver.com/blog/2010/07/01/powerarchiver-free-happy-4th-of-july/ . On a less powerful system in my house, I have 7-Zip installed.

For HP's preinstalled crapware, with my HP Pavilion Elite desktop that I ordered in December, I was given a choice at setup of weather or not to activate Norton Internet Security. If you choose no, it warns you and you can just it uninstall it without issue. I am actually surprised that was not a lot of preinstalled software on my new computer, and that they can be uninstalled without a problem.

Curt,
While I on Microsoft's forums, I found this:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/hottechnology

Except for the threads at the top, all of the threads in this category are video and DVD conversion spam. Some of the posts are even advertising Mac products (on a Microsoft forum).

I'm currently using JComments:

Thanks Veign for the giveaway. Expression Web 3 will be really helpful now, as I am maintaining and developing a website for my (former) high school football team. Once again, thank you Veign for the giveaway.

General Software Discussion / Re: Map a Drive via SFTP
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:07 PM »
There is free program that does this called NetDrive (http://www.netdrive.net/). Unfortunately, it is no longer being developed, but is a great piece of software. It was recently covered at Download Squad. It maps an FTP server and shows it as a hard drive in My Computer. Note that NetDrive is not Vista 64-bit compatible.

Living Room / Re: Is UAC as bad as I think it is?
« on: June 13, 2009, 02:03 PM »
Long Zheng recently demonstrated a vulnerability with auto-elevation with UAC in Windows 7. Here he also gives a  video demo of it.
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20090613/windows-7-uac-code-injection-vulnerability-video-demonstration-source-code-released/

Microsoft is yet to admit that the vulnerability exists. It looks like it might come down to user pressure to get Microsoft to fix this issue.

I got it and the registration info works, but after typing in the registration information it activates the product online. Some users at the GOTD page, have reported an error message when activating that states: "the license code has been used in other computers." - See GOTD Comment page for the comments

It's a great program and interface is very nice and intuitive.
I did not have the activation issue that was reported above.

I use and like Evernote. It's sufficient for basic note taking, although the desktop applications offer far greater features then the web version.

Ever use the program wikidPad? (at http://wikidpad.python-hosting.com/)
Looks like something you can use. Free and open source - Screenshot below:

It feels great for DonationCoder to be back! Very Nice job to mouser, wordzilla and Gothic.

Just installed and trying it now... A great photo editor for quick edits and effects. Any chance this application will remain free after the 2009 beta cut off point? Nice job by the developers.

N.A.N.Y. 2008 / Re: AccuTicket v1.0 - Free Ticketing Software
« on: December 28, 2007, 10:59 PM »
I do use Inno Setup for the installer. It has to be installed to this directory, as the program itself is coded in a way that it requires that folder (for the tickets). I do not know how to set it up so it would be able to run from any folder. It is just a result of me not being an very experienced programmer.

N.A.N.Y. 2008 / AccuTicket v1.0 - Free Ticketing Software
« on: December 28, 2007, 10:03 PM »
AccuTicket is a free ticketing application for concerts and/or events. The interface is easy to use, enabling quick creation and validation of tickets. Tickets can either be invalidated or deleted, once entered. If a ticket is invalidated, it will be marked as invalid, and that it has already been validated. If it is deleted, it can not be recovered for future use.

This program will be updated to include interface changes, updates, and the ability to sell tickets, as in a point of sale system.

**This program was developed in Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition and the .NET Framework 3.5 is required to use AccuTicket. It can be downloaded from Microsoft at the below address:
http://www.microsoft...6&displaylang=en

**This first version of AccuTicket focuses on the code and general functionality, less on the interface. This will be improved in the next release, along with bug fixes or feature enhancements.

**The installer places files in the C:\AccuTicket folder. The program stores tickets in the C:\AccuTicket\Tickets folder. The tickets must remain in the C:\AccuTicket\Tickets folder.

General Software Discussion / Re: No sound in Flash 9. Anyone else?
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:28 AM »
The only problem I've has with Flash is on many YouTube videos, the sound always is muted and I have to raise the volume in the player. I've never had any issues with flash with sound in general

Intro:

authorPOINT Lite is a program designed for converting PowerPoint files to flash files, to be deployed on the web, or  to anyone who does not currently own PowerPoint. It includes a few templates and layouts, show below:

Screenshots

sc3.png
sc4.png

Who is this app designed for:

This application is designed for users who wish to deploy their PowerPoint presentations to the web or want to share their presentations with others (who do not have PowerPoint, or not using a PowerPoint viewer). Also, the Save for web feature in PowerPoint, generates pages that only function correctly in Internet Explorer.

The Good
- Easy to use interface
- Manage all of the converted presentations in one interface (left pane)
- Keeps all animation effects that were applied
- Context menu added in Windows Explorer for PPT files

The needs improvement section
- To find the files to upload to web, you will have to navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\My Documents\authorGEN Projects - no direct way to see the files.
- No way to edit the individual colors of objects in the program

Why I think you should use this product
This program is easy and should be sufficent for most users.

How does it compare to similar apps
It offers many of the same features, although other programs allow better editing of skins and colors.

Conclusions
All in all, a great program with many useful features. Rating 4 (out of 5, 5 being the best)

I using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition Beta. It now offers better CSS handling and a new split page view (code/design), like Dreamweaver. Recommended if you want a free Dreamweaver alternative, as it is a great attempt by Microsoft. It can edit ASP, HTML, JS, CSS, and many more files.

General Software Discussion / Pinnacle VideoSpin - Free Video Editor
« on: November 18, 2007, 12:03 PM »
I have recently found and now using a free video editor by Pinnacle, VideoSpin. The program is actually very nice, for free. Several transitions and titles are provided.

2007-11-18_125903.png

It offers enough for the average user, and exports to the major file formats. The only shortcomings are: the Pinnacle Studio ad next to the preview/library window (see above screenshot) and sometimes it can be difficult to position clips. The program is free, and also includes a free 15-day trial of the MPG/MPEG file export option. If you want to enable it after 15 days, you will have to upgrade to the Studio version

General Software Discussion / Re: Top 3 programs you use
« on: November 18, 2007, 10:53 AM »
Aside from Firefox and Thunderbird, I'd have to say:
  • Serif DrawPlus X2 (Great Graphics and Vector Program)
  • MediaMonkey (Audio Player, great for tagging audio files)
  • Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition Beta (Comparable/Similar to Dreamweaver)
