General Software Discussion / Re: best clipboard program
« on: December 13, 2007, 06:38 PM »
I love ClipX http://www.bluemars.org/clipx/.

It is tiny, 68k; has nice, easy keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl-Shift-V Clip Menu, Ctrl-Shift-G Pass clip to Google, Ctrl-Shift-N Pass to browser as URL; and is easy to use.  It is not updated very often, but it does a nice job.  Check it out.

Wow, you're not kidding!  I am glad you pointed this out again.  I am a Pro registered user, but I had given up on it.  The interface was starting too feel archaic.  The new Bento skin is awesome and the features are great.

Thanks for the tip!

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon 2 Released

The final is a HUGE improvement over the betas.  I am thrilled with it.  I have move to Maxthon as my main browser, although I still have Opera and Firefox installed.  It feels nearly as responsive as Opera and that is a great compliment.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: April 27, 2007, 12:51 PM »
On other fronts: it may just be me, but DOpus 9 seems much quicker than 8. Also, and I'm very pleased about this, they've cured an issue that plagued DOpus 8 with more recent releases of the Stellent Viewers. Overall, very pleased with the update. I'm still not sure about the new icon set, but it's incredibly easy to switch to DOpus 8's icons if you're really not happy with them. The new ones are growing on me.

I don't think that it is just you.  I must say that I am pleased with the performance of the new version.  I also like the improvements/streamlining of the configuration dialog.  There are still a monumental number of settings, but it seems easier to navigate.  The export/backup function for settings seems much cleaner too.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to maintain my backup system, I wll be set.  I need to find a way to select a directory and have DO zip or RAR the directory, defaulting to the name of the directory and appending the date.  So, if I am in c:\temp and I want to back up the temp directory, I would like to select it, press a hotkey (or use a context menu) and create an archive named "temp 20070427.zip".  Near as I can tell, it is quite possible, but I am not sure how to do it yet.

So far I am having fun poking around with the new version.

I'll see if I can write up a list sometime during the weekend. I own licensed copies of both programs (+ Total Commander... yes, I'm a file manager addict :P) so it shouldn't be to much of a problem making a comparison.

I'm with you Dirhael.  Hi my name is Nomadin and I am a file manager addict (FMA).  I probably need FMAA.  ;D   It is really a sad affliction that ultimately costs me money, but none-the-less, I still enjoy playing with the programs.  It goes way back to the Amiga days with the Amiga versions of Directory Opus.

I suspect that I will still register DO and it is possible that I will adopt it as my main manager.  There is much to like and it is so tweakable.  We shall see...

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use 7-Zip files?
« on: April 25, 2007, 04:49 PM »
I still stick with WinRar.  I registered it quite a while ago and it has served me well.  I particularly like a couple command line options that are not available on 7zip.

I use -ag_YYYYMMDD, which automatically appends the current date to the file name, so Opera.rar becomes Opera 20070426.rar.  Makes my backup scheme much easier to manage and -hgPASSWORD to automatically apply a password.

Have you used roboform before? Becuase you seem to be missing the whole point of the application. Opera does not offer anywhere near the functionality that roboform provides. Its not just about remembering passwords, its about form completion ...

Certainly I have used Roboform.  I have registered two copies and I do love the program.  I have 387 logins saved.  :)

But, Opera does have auto completion.  You can see it demo'd here http://www.opera.com...utorials/flash/wand/    Granted, it is not as acurate at identifying forms, but it still does the job.  Honestly, Roboform made it too easy.  It completed forms so easily that I was buying too much online.  Having to take a moment to complete part of the form has saved me some money from impulse buys.
;D

The problem with the Wand is that if something nasty happens (you forgot your password or you accidentally delete the passwords file), then it's over as it doesn't have a simple 'export' function to CSV or even TXT

Good to know. I'll make sure I keep a backup for that file, updated daily.

One of my favorite features is that Opera is completely portable.  No (or little) reliance upon the registry.  I backup my work Opera directory and restore it at home (and vice versa) to maintain my Wand, bookmarks, history, etc.  Then I also have generational versions of the directory saved if needed.  (I use Winrar to add the date to the archive name, that is handy for multiple versions of backed up directories)

I like opera, it is by far the fastest browser, but I simply cannot use it until I can have roboform back incorporated into my configuration. I understand opera's need for "security", but at least give the user a choice. Locking us down to what the dev's feel is pertinent to a browser is like ford telling you that you have to settle for a stock engine or stock radio when much better alternatives exist.

I was with you for the longest time on this topic, but now that I have used Opera exclusively for a couple years I find that Wand meets my needs.  The only thing I really miss is the ability to edit (or even see!) my passwords in the Wand.  Otherwise, it has completely replaced Roboform for me.

I love Opera!

It's just that GPSoft is going to keep coming back for more money on a regular basis, and I don't feel they offer a substantial enough discount to registered users.

I guess this is my biggest issue with DO.  I think that your registered users should get a bigger break.  They (registered users) are often your lifeblood for new sales.  I have convinced many people to buy the programs that I use by showing them how much time it can save or how it can improve their computing experience.

I registered DO8, tweaked it in a way that almost worked for me, and used it for a while.  My config actually mapped most of the NC or TC key strokes since that is my frame of reference.  Unfortunately, I could never get everything to work from the keyboard the way I wanted.  The tab functionality seemed really odd coming from a Commander frame of reference.  It also seemed like the listers lost focus at times that I would not have expected.  (I rarely use the mouse when I am working on file management duties)

I will test DO9, since I like to test good programs, but I don't know that I can pay more than the price of XYPlorer or TC just for an upgrade.  In fact, I might just register XYplorer to support its development.

BTW, I still use Total Commander (registered many years ago), but I keep an eye on xplorer2 (registered), Salamander (registered), DO (8 registered), and XYplorer.

I hate it when a favorite program is shelved.  I actually bought Stiletto, the precursor to PowerPro.  I have relied upon this little program for a long time.  I certainly don't fault Bruce for giving up on it.  He spends way too much time for a nonprofit venture.

Unfortunately, even if it works now, I hate to continue to rely upon it because eventually it will have an issue with the OS or another program.  Sad day... :(

You can also do what you want with PowerPro http://powerpro.webeddie.com/.

You will need to create a PowerPro script that contains:

Local name = ?/"* - Opera"/
Local name2 = ?/"Opera"/
Local exec = "c:/Your Path/Opera/Opera.exe"

;; watch out for line wrap of the following condition
*if (eval("activewindow"++name)) or (eval("activewindow"++ name2))do
do("*window traymin ","active")
*elseif ( eval( "anywindow " ++ name ) ) do
do("*window show ",name)
*else
do(exec,"")
*endif

Then create a hotkey to Opera from PowerPro and call this script.

Hopefully this will be useful to someone.

But you must be the right guy to tell how to make the UI toolbar smaller:tellme:

Screenshot - 2_9_2007 , 10_05_54 AM.jpg[ Invalid Attachment ][ Invalid Attachment ]

I do like my toolbars to be as small as possible, but I've not been able to understand how this can be done in Opera. But maybe this question should be asked somewhere else.

Screenshot - 2_9_2007 , 10_05_54 AM.jpg  <= I hope this works, if so this is my interface.

The UI can be scaled to a certain degree. Press Shift-F12 and the icons can be scaled to a percentage of the standard UI.  I have mine set at 80%.

You can also select minimalist UI's at the Opera site: http://my.opera.com/...ze/skins/minimalist/
I am using Tango_Cl which looks nice to me.

I have also removed the menu from view to save space.  It is in a single drop down button.

Finally, make sure that the Tab bar is shown "only when needed" and the progress bar replaces the address bar. (Both in the Customize option when you right click the tool bar)  I also put the tab bar on the bottom so that the interface is consistent with one tab or multiple tabs - it does not make the page jump when I open a second tab.

Of course there is always F11, which maximizes the window and hides all of the UI stuff.   :D

Great thread.  Here are my fav's:

Total Commander
Xplorer2 (second primarily because of the lack of built-in achive handling)
PowerPro (does everything!)
Opera (so fast and powerful, I love it)
TrueLaunchBar
ClipMate (sometimes I switch to a light cliboard capture program like ClipX (http://bluemars.org/clipx/)
PowerMarks (sure wish they would keep updating this great program)
Find and Run Robot
Screenshot Captor
Xint - notepad replacement (http://www.xtort.net/xtort/xint.php)

Thanks for the lead on safarp.  It is a nice program.  I love Uninstall Tool 2, but I am not sure that it is work $20 at this point.  (I do still have 1.6.6 installed, but safarp appears to be quicker)

If you still are accepting testers, I would love to help as well.

Thanks!
