Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Lock icons in place on desktop
« on: March 10, 2015, 12:12 PM »
Nice work, Skrommel.

To prevent dragging of Desktop icons on Windows 8/8.1, you need to manually add the "WorkerW" class. Perhaps you can update your code so that DeskLock.ini includes that class by default.

Also, it would be great if you could change the hotkey function so that it toggles between enabled/disabled, rather than just disable.

Coding Snacks / Idea: Lightbox

I assume this would be rather easy: display "white" on entire screen, press Esc to quit.

It would allow you to use your monitor as a poor man's lightbox for viewing slides, x-rays, MRI's, and other tranparencies.

Don't laugh: I needed to look at some (important) MRI's for a family member the other day. I created a blank/white image file and viewed it in IrfanView's full-screen mode. Worked for me.

Skrommel's Software / Re: Eject/CloseCD
« on: July 13, 2008, 10:53 AM »
Thanks for the reply, jgpaiva. Good idea - your code seems like it should work, but it didn't for me. Oh well...

I ended up using this rather clever example code from the AHK docs to create a hotkey-based script, converted it to an EXE, and I have the EXE autorun at system startup:

F11::
Drive, Eject
; If the command completed quickly, the tray was probably already ejected.
; In that case, retract it:

if A_TimeSinceThisHotkey < 1000 ; Adjust this time if needed.
     Drive, Eject,, 1
return

Works great - pressing F11 toggles my drive tray open/closed. That's actually more convenient than having to click on something.

JohnB

I'd like to modify your EjectCD script so that it will either eject or close a certain drive, depending on its current state. To toggle the drive's "tray state", if you will.

I've tried modifying your script by just adding "1" as the last argument (Drive,Eject,%A_LoopField%:,1). According to the AutoHotKey command docs, that argument should make the Eject command work the way I want.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. My recompiled script will close the tray if it's open, but it won't eject it if it's closed. Any suggestions? As you can tell, I'm not an AutoHotkey scripting expert... :)

best,
JohnB

btw, I've also made the if (list = "") change to your script, as mentioned in a previous post.

Looks like you fixed the stylesheet - it now renders correctly in FF3.

Just a quick update: I installed the new FF3 RC1 yesterday, which includes a new option during install to make FF your default browser. Just so you know, this does not fix the issue I've described - I was hoping it might. Oh well...

best,

ps: unrelated topic - Firefox3 RC1 does NOT render the DonationCoder Forum pages correctly - screenshot attached. I assume the same is true with any SMF-based forums.

Thanks, Mouser - attached is the RegShot "compare" file (before: default=FF3; after: default=IE6). Hopefully that will help us troubleshoot this issue.

Of course, I'd be happy to "beta test" any prelim updates you make to BrowserTraySwitch.

btw, thanks for the tip on RegShot. Great tool - can't believe I've never used it before.

best,
JohnB

ps: you'll need to rename the .txt file as .htm - forum doesn't allow uploads of .htm files.

Thanks for your quick reply, Mouser.

Duh - I should've mentioned those things in my original post.

1) can you set the default browsers sucessfully from within the browsers themselves? ie if you tell FF3 to be your default, is it obeyed? same question for IE?

Yes, that works fine for both browsers.

2) can browsertrayswitch not switch to either of them successfully? or is it just switching to FF3 that doesnt work?

The problem appears to be "bi-directional" - I can't switch from either browser to the other browser.

Weird, huh? If it were simply an issue of FF3 compatibility, BrowserTraySwitch should still be able to switch back to IE6 like it always has. Maybe FF3 creates (or breaks) some registry entry that we don't know about?

JohnB

BrowserTraySwitch / Firefox 3 + IE6
« on: May 16, 2008, 02:06 PM »
Hi Mouser,

I've used BrowserTraySwitch for ages - great software!

Unfortunately, since installing Firefox 3 Beta4, it no longer lets me switch my default browsers between FF3 & IE6. It's kinda hard to tell since there are so many registry entries involved, but certainly it doesn't correctly change the URL shortcut association.

I've tried your suggestion of manually setting each browser as the default once, but that doesn't fix it.

One more thing: my config.ini file is empty - I'm relying on BrowserTraySwitch's auto-detect.

Any ideas on how I might fix this?

JohnB

General Software Discussion / Re: Mobile Browsing: Opera Mini 4
« on: November 20, 2007, 12:32 PM »
Thanks, nontroppo. Gotcha on the Mobile View thing - I must not have been on any pages where it made a difference - already formatted for WAP or whatever.

The Skin issue isn't a deal-breaker. I just prefer to not have a dark teak border around the browser on my cell phone's small, somewhat dark screen.

Opera Mini 4 looks good. As with previous versions of Opera Mini, it makes Web browsing via cell phone (almost) bearable.

I have a couple questions if anyone knows the answer:

1) In previous versions of Opera Mini you used to be able to select one of several different skins via Settings, but I don't see this feature in v4. Did they nuke this feature in the latest version?

2) What is the Mobile View setting supposed to do? I've enabled/disabled it, but I don't see any difference

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Run on exit
« on: September 28, 2007, 12:03 PM »
I'm trying to find some kind of utility that will monitor a specific process (app, window?) and run another program when the first application is closed.

Here's what I'm trying to do: run a specific backup utility (w/ some command line arguments) whenever my client quits Thunderbird.

Any input/advice will be much appreciated.

sorry about any breach of etiquette: I'm not a big "forum" guy and didn't realize that people might be so anal about off-topic posts - especially when I was just trying to help someone out.

(Of course, since you've unsubscribed to this topic, you won't be reading this). :)

ProcessTamer / Re: priority not always set...
« on: April 18, 2006, 09:53 AM »
Hi Mouser,

Yes, ProcessTamer 2.03.01 still occasionally "misses" setting the priority for MediaPlayerClassic to High as per the explicit rule I've set. Any idea when your next minor update will be available?

thanks again,
JohnB

Mouser, it's great to hear that you're considering a similar utility for switching the default EMAIL client.  I had posted a msg about this around a month ago, but had never received any replies:

« on: March 25, 2006, 07:51 PM »
Thanks for implementing those suggestions so quickly, Skrommel! Both of the new functions work very well: /hide & "deleteonstartup". Were they already "in the works" before my post?

The new Settings dialog is a very nice touch. However, it seemed to have trouble writing the desired Menu Name to the .ini file; perhaps because the name I was trying to use contained a space ("Recent Programs")? Also, how about a field to enter the desired ShortcutFolder name as well - I noticed that the .ini file format now includes separate entries for both the "menuname" and "shortcutfolder".

Also, if the specified Start menu folder doesn't exist the first time you run RecentRun v1.2, it will create a Start menu folder called "ERROR" and write that value to the .ini - pretty weird...

Of course, I was able to work around all of this by manually editing the .ini file - I just thought you'd wanna know about any bugs.

thanks again for a great little utility (and for making it even better).

best,
JohnB

Finished Programs / DONE: RecentRun command line?
« on: March 21, 2006, 09:50 AM »
After looking for such a utility for quite a while, I "recently" discovered RecentRun for creating a Start menu folder with a list of my recently-used programs. Works great!

It would be even better if it supported a command-line argument (/purge or whatever) that would clear the list of recently-run programs and then load the program in the usual fashion. I've added RecentRun to my Startup folder so that it loads automatically on boot-up; with this command line option it would always start with a "clean slate" instead of preserving the recently-run program list between sessions.

Also, how about a command-line option (/notray or whatever) that would load the program without its icon being visible in the System Tray?

Perhaps you could implement these features in a future release. In any case, thanks for creating such a useful little utility.

best,
JohnB

BrowserTraySwitch / EmailTraySwitch?
« on: March 12, 2006, 07:03 PM »
BrowserTraySwitch is great. Have you ever considered writing a similar program for switching the default email client?

In particular, it would be great if such a program could support Portable Thunderbird - as discussed here:

http://portableapps.com/node/490

I realize that setting the default email client involves quite a few more registry entries than does the default browser; plus you need to know the path to the MAPI dll and a buncha other stuff.

Anyway, food for thought - as if you're probably not busy enough! :)

JohnB

ProcessTamer / Re: priority not always set...
« on: March 12, 2006, 06:02 PM »
Thanks for the quick reply, Mouser. I'll keep an eye out for the new release & let you know how it works with Media Player Classic.

btw, when Process Tamer does detect the program & forces the priority (about 75% of the time), it works great. I had been having a problem with "skipping" on media file playback if I was trying to do something else simultaneously that was CPU- and/or disk-intensive. Setting the priority to High does the trick.

Thanks again for a great piece of software.

ProcessTamer / priority not always set...
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:00 PM »
Hi,

I'm using Process Tamer v2.03.01 and it seems to have a problem with setting the priority of a process for which I've set an Explicit Rule (Set High). Sometimes it sets the priority correctly; sometimes it doesn't.

The program in question is "Media Player Classic" - an open-source replacement for Windows Media Player. I'm not using any of the other "auto-tamer" functions in Process Tamer; I just wanna use it to always force this one process, mplayerc.exe, to High priority.

Is it possible that your new v3 will fix this type of "detection" issues?

thanks,
JohnB
