I've written about this before.. It's a very strange sad feeling as a programmer when you find that someone else has coded a program you wanted to write, and done a good job, leaving you with no real reason to write your program, but still the lingering urge to do so.   But with so many program ideas floating around, it just seems a waste to write something that already exists.

Hi, mouser, I understand your feelings, altough I'm no programmer myself.
I don't post often in the forum but I usually read it, at least on a newsletter-ly basis :)
When I read that you're considering not developing ContextMenu Commander, I couldn't refrain from thinking: "It'd be SO great if instead he could develop some sort of (donationware) alternative to Right Click Commander"
RCC is a great little program that allows you to navigate the directory structure via context menu, but I have a feeling that it's not being developed anymore (last update is from 2004).

Maybe you can take a look at it and tell us if it's even possible or not. I understand that the features of the two programs are very different and they have very little in common, except a similar name (ContextMenu Commander - Right Click Commander), and also that you have a lot of other projects to take care of, but I decided to drop this idea, just in case :)

General Software Discussion / Re: On-Line Dictionaries
« on: April 26, 2008, 02:27 AM »
Am I the only one who uses The Free Dictionary?

It's really good. I particularly like the included pronunciation (English not being my native language, that's a life saver), thesaurus and related words.

Plus, they have a handy browser add-on (for both IE and Firefox): http://www.thefreedi...onary.com/add2ie.htm

P.S.: they also have an idioms section, as well as specialized dictionaries (Medical, Legal, Financial), a decent encyclopedia, and a section that shows articles from Wikipedia embedded in their website, like this entry for Donation Coder :)

General Software Discussion / Re: KMPlayer going commercial?

 :(

I like KMPlayer so much ....

Maybe it's time to give GOM Player a try. They say good things about it. Has anyone used it?

I'd love to see a graph like this comparing real mail vs. spam mail over time.  anyone know of any such charts?

Hmmm ... this is the best such chart I could find:

It comes from the Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse website.

Overview:

The DCC or Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse is an anti-spam content filter that runs on a variety of operating systems. As of mid-2007, it involves millions of users, tens of thousands of clients and more than 250 servers collecting and counting checksums related to more than 300 million mail messages on week days. The counts can be used by SMTP servers and mail user agents to detect and reject or filter spam or unsolicited bulk mail. DCC servers exchange or "flood" common checksums. The checksums include values that are constant across common variations in bulk messages, including "personalizations."

The idea of the DCC is that if mail recipients could compare the mail they receive, they could recognize unsolicited bulk mail. A DCC server totals reports of checksums of messages from clients and answers queries about the total counts for checksums of mail messages. A DCC client reports the checksums for a mail message to a server and is told the total number of recipients of mail with each checksum. If one of the totals is higher than a threshold set by the client and according to local whitelists the message is unsolicited, the DCC client can log, discard, or reject the message.

Because simplistic checksums of spam would not be effective, the main DCC checksums are fuzzy and ignore aspects of messages. The fuzzy checksums are changed as spam evolves. Since the DCC started being used in late 2000, the fuzzy checksums have been modified several times.

Unless used with isolated DCC servers and so losing much of its power, the DCC causes some additional network traffic. However, the client-server interaction for a mail message consists of exchanging a single pair of UDP/IP datagrams of about 100 bytes. That is often less than the several pairs of UDP/IP datagrams required for a single DNS query. SMTP servers make DNS queries to check the envelope Mail_From value and often several more. As with the Domain Name System, DCC servers should be placed near active clients to reduce the DCC network costs. DCC servers exchange or flood reports of checksums, but only the checksums of bulk mail. Since most mail is not bulk and only representative checksums of bulk mail need to be exchanged, flooding checksums among DCC servers involves a manageable amount of data.

Thank you all for the replies and suggestions. Some of them I'd already tried and some others (like the well regarded Avid) don't really suit my current needs.
I'll check out the other suggestions posted here which I hadn't considered before. If I end up finding a program that I really like I'll come back and post about it here so the info is available to everybody.

Hi folks

I'm looking for a simple Video Editing Software. When I first started out looking for it, I thought it would be easier to find one that fits my needs ... not so, apparently  :-\

Here are the main features that I'm looking for in the software:

- Both Storyboard and Timeline modes (Video Edit Magic doesn't have a storyboard mode, and Serif's MoviePlus storyboard mode is lacking)
- Small, or at least not huge (Premiere Elements is HUGE by my standards, so is ULead VideoStudio). Say, less than 100 MB ....
- Inexpensive, preferably downright cheap (less than U$S 100, in any case)
- Ability to export to my codec of choice (Windows Movie Maker, not too surprisingly, only exports to wmv)
- Ability to accept clips of different sizes and resize them to fit my specified output size
- Relatively simple to use (I'm not a fan of foobar and Miranda, if you know what I mean ...)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon 2 Released
« on: August 10, 2007, 07:34 AM »
I'm a long time user of Maxthon (and previously MyIE2  :)) and I've tried several Maxthon 2 betas a number of times. Unfortunately, I keep coming back to Maxthon 1.
My main complaints about Maxthon 2 (which I've posted in their forum) are:
- Resource usage (I've tested both with THE same tabs open and M2 undoubtedly uses more memory than M1)
- Tab-bar behavior. The ability to make the tab-bar multiline AND respectful of the minimum and maximum tab width set in Maxthon Options (or Control Center as it's now called) isn't there. Please see the following Maxthon forum thread :http://forum.maxthon....php?showtopic=63924 , for a detailed description of the (annoying) issue  :(

So, it's Maxthon 1.6 for me ....

MediaMonkey rocks, IMHO.

I second that. For large libraries, the management features of MediaMonkey are hard to beat. I'm using version 2, but version 3 is in alpha/beta stage and looks very promising.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlook 2007 - a rant
« on: June 19, 2007, 02:43 AM »
Well, I just couldn't stand it any more, not for another day. So last night I moved my email to Thunderbird.

This may be a little late since you alreeady moved to Thunderbird. But if you find that TB doesn't fulfill your needs beyond e-mail management you may want to take a look at Barca (http://www.pocosyste...p;id=9&Itemid=27)
It's the PIM I'm using right now and I'm very happy with it.

Living Room / Re: Cached pages in IE - help please!
« on: May 26, 2007, 05:31 PM »
Hi!
This may be a little late to help Farmsteader, but I still wanted to post it.
I was surprised to read this thread and see that no one suggested using "The Wayback Machine" a.k.a. "The Internet Archive" at http://www.archive.org
It's an excellent tool to find lost and / or changed pages. It's not perfect and you won't be able to find there every single page that was once published on the Internet, but it does certainly have an impressive library of "obsolete" pages (85 Billion they say ...) It's definitely worth a check ...

12
I tell you what. The best add-on for IE would be Maxthon.

I second that 100%

How about incorporating the search box in the DC forum reply/quick reply forms (might make posts more erogenous - got there in three clicks from 'interesting')?
-Carol Haynes (May 08, 2007, 07:22 AM)

Hey! I'm all for more erogenous posts too!!!!!  :D

I've posted about another program that does some of those things in this same forum (it's an old thread and I'm too lazy to go look for it  :-[). Namely the syncing of favorites/bookmarks among several browsers.
So I'll repeat it here:

Bookmark Bridge (http://bookmarkbridg...forge.net/index.html)

Quote from its website:
"BookmarkBridge is a small, easy to use, multi-platform, GUI-based utility that allows the user to share bookmarks between all their browsers. The user runs it periodically to synchronize between the browsers."

It's absolutely free and open source. It's supposedly still a beta version, but I haven't run into any problems using it. It hasn't been updated too often lately too, but the latest version seems to work ok with the most recent browsers.
I'm using it for a three-way sync between Opera, Firefox and IE/Maxthon.
I hope you'll like it too.

15
All your Webster's are belong to us ....  :P

16
Hmmm... Interesting... Let's hope that works out.

I use Thunderbird at home, and I'm about ready to switch to something else now (critical bugs in TB). I tried Eudora a long time ago but just didn't like it.

I might just go back to OE. Or maybe try out TheBat again... Heck. I don't know. As long as it isn't Outlook...

Have you tried Pocomail already? (www.pocomail.com) Excellent e-mail program. I've been using it for over 2 years and never found anything better than it ....

17
can sbSE do that for SFTP (SSH?). Really?

You're not being sarcastic on me, now, are you?  :D

To recap, I recall simply asking what you were using webdrive for. A possible answer could have been "I'm using webdrive for the SFTP connection because SyncbackSE doesn't support it", but you chose another ...
Indeed, SyncbackSE does not support SFTP, but it does support FTPS  :)
Confusing? you bet. For those of us who don't remember the difference, here's Micky (the developper of syncback) explaining it: http://www.2brightsp...v2&id=156&c=

That's not what I call self-evident, precisely

urlwolf: I'm assuming that you are using the commercial product Webdrive because none of the free solutions for using SFTP with Syncback worked for you. I'm referring to the alternatives mentioned here: http://www.2brightsp...v2&id=193&c=

(Tunnelier did work for this guy, at least: http://dmihalik.com/...plications-over-sftp)

Anyway, sarcasm or not, I wish you luck in your search of the most suitable backup solution.

General Software Discussion / Re: Browsers, Bookmarks, & synching
« on: August 06, 2006, 05:45 PM »

What do you people out there use?

For syncing bookmarks among several browser in the same PC, I've never found anything better than Bookmark Brigde (http://bookmarkbridg...forge.net/index.html)
Small, simple, efficient yet powerful and .... FREE!!!!
Give it a try.

I'm currently using it to sync between Firefox, Maxthon and Opera.

19
Currently I'm using syncBackSE (no compression) + locate 3.0 + webdrive.

Just curious ... what are you using webdrive for? Maybe for uploading backups to an offsite FTP server? I'm almost sure that SyncBackSE can do that without the need for Webdrive ...

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Translators Wanted
« on: February 21, 2006, 10:21 PM »
Hey, Mouser, count me in for Spanish (which you already have a couple of, but anyway). Let me humbly suggest that if you have a program translated into Spanish, then make sure that you have TWO Spanish versions: one for Spain and the other for Latin America. Though the language is exactly the same, some of the computer-related vocabulary is different when you go to the other side of the Atlantic (that would be Spain from where I am). Kind of the "programme" and "program" thing in English, if you know what I mean.
Latin American countries do have small differences among themselves but there is a "neutral" vocabulary easily understood in every country.

Hope it helps.

Backup Guide / Don't forget Syncback !!!!
« on: February 13, 2006, 03:00 PM »
I can't believe Syncback wasn't included in the Backup software review.

It has an amazing set of features and it's quite user-friendly. Plus, the author is constantly releasing new updates with bug fixes and new features, something that I really appreciate.

I did try many of the programs mentioned in the review a while ago, when I was looking for an FTP Backup solution tool. I finally chose Syncback for it reliability and simplicity in achieving what I wanted.

Please include it in future updates of the review (and NO, I'm NOT the developer :) )

Official DonationCoder.com Reviews / Re: Best Anti-virus
« on: February 13, 2006, 02:50 PM »
I used Kaspersky a while ago, and while it is excellent at detection and real-time protection, it is a bit too much resource hungry.
Now I use NOD32 that has even better heuristics detetion (actually, it has THE BEST heuristics detection there is), but not such a big library. However, NOD32 is much lighter and gives me all the protection I need ... and them some.

May I suggest www.av-comparatives.org

It is the best antivirus comparison site I've found
