……
But they seem to re-encode the whole video stream again which can take hours, (6+ hours for a 3.5 hour capture).

I have no experience in editing such a long video.
But you case brings me more confidence for the quality of AP -- maybe slow, but reliable, not like some other apps which will crash for large file or long time capture.

I used ActivePresenter for several years, and I think it's the best free screen recording solution. But comparing its high quality, there're only so few people know it. So I'd like to write something  for it.

For those who have researched a lot in free screen recording solutions, these are some candidates:
- WebEx recorder: small, easy to use, good for long time recording. hard to edit and publish.
- Camstudio: classic, open source, large video size, not updated for a few years.
- Wink: it's good for flash (.swf), but not for now days "video". not updated for a few years
- FlashBack Express: most people think it's the winner  -- until they get to know ActivePresenter  :)

ActivePresenter is  a recorder, so it can:
- capture area, window, full screen, fixed size(some predefined size)
+ use predifined and DIY profile: mouse, click, input, video, fps, audio , hotkey...
+ change screen resolution in AP

But it's more than a recorder, you can even use it as an audio video edtiro:
- add recordings into project
- also import image\ video\ office documents into project
- split/ cut video
- add annotation: shape, text, highlight, spotlight. and for each element, you can set the fore and background color, fonts, size, time span, fade in/out ...
- recording while edit
- automatic audio via Text to Speech engine

For publish, AP can export to:
- Video (MP4, FLV, AVI, WMV, WebM, MKV)
- Images (PNG, JPEG)
- pro versions can also export to HTML, interactive Flash and HTML5 simulation, or other document formats (PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX).

visit http://atomisystems.com/activepresenter/free-edition/ for more information
If someone are interested in the Pro version -- I think the free edition is enough -- I can help to get discount

urlwolf & IainB:

Glad to find DC members talking about WizNote.

As a software fan & IT volunteer in China, I'm one of the pioneers introducing Evernote to Chinese users, and the translator (into Chinese) of superboyac's review: Notetaking Software Roundup #1
And lucky enough, WizNote developers are my friends.

I'd like to do my best to help English users to know and to use wiznote better.

XMind is a very powerful mindmap software for Windows/Linux/Mac.
I think it's better than FreeMind in terms of functions.

It has freeware/open source version, which is enough for most users.
Also, it has Plus (79 usd), Pro version(99 or 129 usd).

Now, XMind Plus 2012 is free for Edu/Nonprofit Org before May 31.
ID photo needed to upload, so they know that you are a student/teacher or work for a non-profit organization.
Get it: https://www.xmind.ne...uy/?t=edu&p=plus

Living Room / DC members or software fans near Houston?
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:39 AM »
I'm a Chinese software blogger, deep user and promoter of TC, vim, irfanview, 7-zip, autohotkey, Evernote, wink, etc.
and now I'm in a 2-week business trip in Houston.

Are there DC members or software fans near Houston?
I'd like to have a meetup, exchange software experience.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor v3 beta

Congratulations.
But it's a pity for none multi-lang UI, none unicode support in "text object".

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Rename Pad
« on: August 04, 2009, 07:31 PM »
something similar which opens a very basic notepad style window with all the current folder paths contents, and just like in notepad you can go line to line, find and replace, etc,.
-SexyLilDarkPaw (August 04, 2009, 12:47 PM)

This really good idea was implemented in 2 software:

1st is freeware Chgname.
by [email protected] in 1998, via Delphi 4.0.
the wesbiste is not visitable now(http://www.uio.no/~kln/)
but you can download via: http://www.reformed-...ownloads/Chgname.zip

2nd is the famous Total Commander.
select what you want to rename,
ctrl+m
you get a very powerful multi-rename tool.
also, you can click the button for external text editor (for me, it's Vim).

Great TC and great review.
And, I'll write something for TC7.5 this evening, in Chinese.

10
"Everything" 1.2.0.317b is available for beta testing. It now supports Unicode ……
Yes, It support Chinese 中文 now. And I 'll provide a Chinese language Pack.
Thanks for the news.

Also, one reader from my blog are waiting for the FARR plugin.

11
很好!
very nice!

Another idea:
keep ahk scripts all together with a tree style notes manager.
the left side is the tree, that is the list all ahk scripts.
the right side is the content (highlight is better) of current selected ahk.
with some hotkey, users can run/stop any ahk easily.

13
100% agree with you.
CMS maybe better for some wirters, also include me.
but wordpress are more easy to use, so I keep in wordperss now.

Living Room / Re: DC Forum Members -- Tell Us About Your Website
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:11 AM »
my website, or call it a blog, is http://xbeta.info
the aim to write & publish, is to share my experience on freeware:
- find the best freeware, to alternate the not so good ones (free/share/commercial), to help people avoid crack
- share the principles and skills of using software
the Chinese name of the site 善 用 佳 软 means:
善 kindly & skillfully
用 use
佳 nice
软 software

maybe there are not so many Chinese readers here ( but I do meet some, even also my reader), so I help to exchange ideas and information between DC & Chinese.
- I translated some posts and homepage into Chinese:
  + Screenshot Captor homepage: http://xbeta.info/screenshot_captor.htm
+ how to use Screenshot Captor:http://blog.sina.com...6dac66f010004y3.html
+ translate of notetaking software review, http://blog.sina.com...6dac66f01000b55.html
+ translate of best text editor review: http://blog.sina.com...6dac66f010006k9.html
+ recently finished the translation of SQLNotes UI & homepage: http://xbeta.info/sqlnotes.htm

- publish some article of WPS, an office suite similar to MS Office, but only 40+MB

my friends, maybe these Chinese(or Chinses related) softare are familar to you:
- Maxthon, Avant Browser, Green Browser, the world,   they're all IE based rich featured broswer
- myBase, a free form note taker
- foxit reader, a lite and fast pdf reader
- Fast Stone Capture and so on
- download managers: netants, flashget, etc

If any friend want more Chinese to know your software (freeware best) or ideas, I'd like to help.

Also, welcome to Beijing. Welcome to 2008 Olympics.

PPLandry:

I have finished the UI Chinese translation and send to [email protected] several days ago, also a forum message to you. but got no reply. You got it?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR in other languages?
« on: May 25, 2008, 08:39 PM »
you should do that.
also, the Screenshot Captor.

maybe it's always a good idea to creat program with seperated language files.

If people really want this, i could add it without much trouble.

19
I know the power of FARR, although I did not use it.
so I intorduce it to Chinese users:
http://xbeta.info/ask-quick-launch.htm
if you cannot read Chinse, see the google translated page.

and ask my readers to help translate the homepage & FARR into Chinese.
ask for Mouser's permission of translate.

thanks to all of the replies.
also thanks to all the nice tools.

2009-09-03 update:
Editpad has fixed this bug.
EditPad Lite 6.5.0 - 1 September 2009, Word wrap: Allow text to be wrapped after any ideograph, even if there is no whitespace.
and the author said in email: The next free minor update of AceText will get the same fix.

a small bug in Chinese (maybe also other double byte characters) when it auto wrap:
it try to change to a new line at a "space", but this is not a good rule in Chinese.
see what happened at the tab, which is at the beginning of a paragrap.
notepad OK, Acetext bug.

other Chinese users can have a test.

    道可道,非常道;名可名,非常名。无名天地之始,有名万物之母。
    故常无欲以观其妙,有欲以观其窍。此两者同出而异名,同为之玄,玄之又玄,众妙之门。

xbeta,
Have you tried minipad2 by Xu Liang, Nebula Software?  Yes - Chinese   :)

yes, I know it. although not try it too much.
I need a program to hold all my texts together, so a tree is necessary, only muti-tab is not enough.
that's is,  I want an info manager (can store all the final result), instead of a quick note taker (temporary take note and then move it too other place or delet it )

I know it's hard to find a better solution than EverNote/WikidPad/AceText/Mybase....
but just can not help searching it.

23
in fact, it's my 1st time find it's name is wiki----d-----pad.
maybe the author will do something for such a common mistake.

Hey guys, just want to mention again that it's wikidpad, not wikipad...  ;D I'm just saying because it helps to find threads about certain software when the name is well spelt.

24
……I use autohotkey to ……. Many softwares lacked custom shotcuts
AHK is also my favorite. It can do more things than we think.
once a user asked for shortcut in Total Commander,
to remap the up and down arrow to ^N, ^P.
although TC is highly customizable, but these action/command are not in list.
so I give the code in AHK, and find that, in this way, ahk can remap any shortcut key for anysoftware.

SetTitleMatchMode, 2
SetKeyDelay, 0

^p::
IfWinActive Total Commander
    send, {up}
else
    sendplay, ^p
return

^n::
IfWinActive Total Commander
    send, {down}
else
    sendplay, ^n
return

You can always try wikidpad. I have been using it for 4 years. It is plain text with wiki features plus many advanced ideas that many others do not have like superior tracking-tagging per page or per line etc
http://www.jhorman.org/wikidPad/
yes, this is a very good software.
support utf-8 and search very well. tag is powerful.
I even creat a flash to show it to my readers, see attachment.

but I dont like it very much, although I dont know why.

kartal, do you save all your information in one or several database? how big (MB) is it? about how many items in it?
can  it run well in case of large mount of information ?
