Hi folks,

I'm sorry for not replying sooner, I just came across this thread.

To clarify, we've never, ever installed anything on a user's computer without permission. I don't know what the Swiss website linked in OP is talking about. From the start, we've always given users the option (Yes or No) if they want to install SharewareOnSale Notifier. If user clicks 'No', then SharewareOnSale Notifier is not installed. Only if user clicks 'Yes' when specifically asked about SharewareOnSale Notifier, then SharewareOnSale Notifier is installed. A user must click 'Yes' or 'No' at the screen when asked to install SharewareOnSale Notifier -- they cannot proceed further without clicking an option. Further, uninstalling SharewareOnSale Notifier is very easy if you no longer want it.

My apologies for any confusion or inconvenience! If any further clarifications are needed, please let me know.

Take care,
Ashraf

Do you mind providing the portable version in .ZIP format? Not everyone can open .7z.

Don't worry, you will see this again very soon. I promise. :D

Mouser,

Very clever; I need to remember to change the TLS when moving servers.

I will look into TotalChoice as a domain registrar, but I am leaning towards Internet.bs as my next domain registrar. I have heard really good things about them and they are the cheapest around.

Cheers Gothi[c].

8
dns propagation seems pretty fast..
if you can read this you are in the new server.

Who is your registrar? 1and1 takes forever...

BTW Grats on the server! I know that feeling of having a new toy :D

9
Hey Mouser,

Glad to be seen :P

To be fair it should be mentioned that discussion is three years old. Not saying there is anything wrong with it, or anything, just saying.

Take care,
Ashraf

Hey DC'ers,

This is pretty cool, not going to lie. How do you afford to mail out these kits?

12
This is true - stability is always important. However, the offer wasn't from a no-name; it was from TurnKey Internet, who have been around for a while and are fairly large (although not as big as SoftLayer). I took advantage of the TurnKey Internet deal (although I didn't go with the i7, but I wish I did) and so far they have been great.

Did you look into WiredTree? They have an excellent reputation around webhosting circles and are typically cheaper than SoftLayer; plus they offer fully managed services.

Specs:
Intel Xeon Quad Core Dual Processor (Xeon-Harpertown 5430-Quadcore 2.66GHz) [same as before]
8gb ram [used to have 4gb]
dual sata 500gb drives in raid configuration [used to have dual 250gb not in raid]
1000mbs uplink [same as before]
3000gb bandwidth [i think our previous plan was 2000gb]
Vmware ESX Operating System [used to be CentOs]

Note that while we used to have separate main server and much smaller member server, now we are moving everything to one server and using virtual machines.

Bleh. If I knew you were looking for a new server I coulda told you about a Black Friday deal where an i7, 16 GB RAM, 10 TB (5 TB in/out) on a 100 Mbps dedicated, 1x1TB, 8 IP was available for $100. You could have got two of them and made a few upgrades and still come out cheaper than the SL you just got.

14
Mouser,

Out of curiosity what are the specs on the new sever, aside from the CPU? How much bandwidth are you getting from SL?

In regards to CMS, I would say go Wordpress (even though it isn't officially a CMS) but Wordpress doesn't integrate that well with Simple Machines AFAIK.

Hello,

The business edition used to be free - not free "for a limited time" - back when I reviewed it. Seems the developer has done a 180 on that after the program has gained traction.

I don't know if anyone noticed but that article is over 3 years old. LH just had the author copy and paste it onto LH - it is nothing new. So, yes some techniques may be outdated.

Hello Fellow DC'ers,

This weekend dotTech is running a promotion where everyone can get a 1 year license of Returnil Virtual System 2010 Home Lux for free (promotion ends 12 AM PST Monday December 14, 2009 so hurry if you want in). For those that don't know what Returnil Virtual System 2010 Home Lux is, let me explain really quickly.

Returnil Virtual System 2010 is a unique security software that protects your computer in an unorthodox manner. RVS 2010 uses a powerful combination of anti-virus, anti-malware, and a virtual system to protect your computer from all types of viruses and unwanted system changes. The traditional security software like Avira, Kaspersky, Norton, AVG, NOD32, etc. actively, and on demand, detect and remove infected files. RVS 2010, on the other hand, has a two pronged attack to the malware problem:

  • Virtual System - RVS creates a "virtual copy" of your main system partition (the partition which you have Windows installed) and whatever changes are made to your computer are dumped when you restart your computer (there are opinions to tweak how it does that, but generally speaking, that is how it works).
  • Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware - RVS also includes the traditional anti-virus/anti-malware live protection and on-demand scanning features.

Because of this two pronged approach which incorporates traditional and innovative protection capabilities, if used properly, a user can keep his/her computer 100% clean with RVS 2010.

Now I do apologize, but since this is a dotTech Exclusive promotion, I can't post directly here on how to get the freebie like I have with my last three threads; you will need to visit dotTech to take advantage of this offer. So at this point there are two links of interest for everyone:
