Pocomail and Barca

The best email software I've ever used. Sadly, it went the same route as many other email clients

Correct. Version 1.5.1 works perfectly for me  :up:

Has anyone else tried this latest version?

Interesting.  Can you pm me (or email me) your "ipconfig /all"

Done. I just sent it to you via PM.

Updated to version 1.5.  Lots of new features, too.  I come up with a different way of fetching the network information, so maybe you won't have any problems this time.

It's getting better, but there are still a couple of problems.

The network information is 50-50:
DHCP Auto, MAC address and DNS Server(s) are OK
IP address, Gateway and Subnet are wrong, they all display "0.0.0.0"

However, if I replace ipaddress by ipaddress1 in the systemus.ini file of DefaultConfig, it properly detects the current IP address of my first network card. The same with ipaddress2, it detects the (also current) IP address of my second card. This second card is a VPN, by the way

The same is true for macaddress1 and macaddress2, both are correctly detected. But if I just leave it as macaddress in systemus.ini, it always returns the MAC address of the first network card.

Gateway and Subnet always display 0.0.0.0, no matter what I do

I just uploaded version 1.4.1 which should be able to bypass the startup error.  I still don't know why the error is there as I cannot reproduce it, though.
My Windows 7 receives everything from the DHCP server.

I downloaded version 1.4.1 and tried it. As they say, I have good news and bad news  :D
The good news is that the popup error is indeed gone
The bad news is that all of the network info (IP address, MAC address, etc.) is blank. It doesn't even display "N/A", it's just blank. Except for the DHCP Server, which shows "1"

I still haven't tried to customize the information. I'll try it later and let you know is there's any additional information that could be missing

Anyway, thanks for trying to fix these issues

@city_zen - thanks for that!  Strange, I don't have any errors when I run the program;  but I don't really have any convenient way to test on other systems, and don't have any beta testers.
Are you on Win7 or Win10?  And are you running on an admin account?  What happens if you run Systemus AS ADMIN - do you still have the error?

I'm on Windows 7 and the error stays the same when I run Systemus as administrator (right click -> "run as admin")

I don't know if it's relevant but my system is configured to automatically get the DNS Servers addresses

I'm not sure why it's throwing the error, but at least I can catch it so it doesn't display an error popup.

Can you show me your config's systemus.ini file contents?  I don't mean the systemus.ini in the application folder, but the one in the config's directory.

There are two "config" directories: TemplateConfig and DefaultConfig
The DefaultConfig didn't have a systemus.ini file, only the TemplateConfig does. And that file's contents is exactly the same as the code you gave me:

[main]
computername=x||green
serial=xx
osversion=x||green
bit=xx||green
make=x||green
bootmode=x||green
username=x||green
admin=xx||green
domain=x||green
domainmember=xx||green
ipaddress=x|bold|fuchsia|10
dhcpenabled=xx
macaddress=x|bold|fuchsia|10
dnsserver=x||green
gateway=x
subnet=xx
memory=x||green

If you want the gateway to appear, create systemus.ini in the config dir and paste this code into it.  (directions are in the help file about how this works) - then restart Systemus and you'll get a larger report.

[main]
computername=x||green
serial=xx
osversion=x||green
bit=xx||green
make=x||green
bootmode=x||green
username=x||green
admin=xx||green
domain=x||green
domainmember=xx||green
ipaddress=x|bold|fuchsia|10
dhcpenabled=xx
macaddress=x|bold|fuchsia|10
dnsserver=x||green
gateway=x
subnet=xx
memory=x||green

I did that (actually, I copied the "systemus.ini" file from the TemplateConfig to the DefaultConfig folder, since the contents are the same) and it worked  :up: The Gateway is there and it's correctly detected

Ok, now it did download correctly

The changes worked, Systemus now properly detects my MAC address

But it throws an error when starting:

https://i.imgur.com/UG2CZj0.png

If I click "Continue", then everything works, but that error seems to be related to the changes in this version

Systemus Updated to Version 1.4.

Gateway and DNS Server is added.
Now you can customize the main window, and have a different main window for different menu configurations and you can switch between them.

I also tweaked the MAC and IP Addresses; hopefully, now they will reflect the working set.  Aside from that, you can add up to four existing ones with the custom main window info configurations so that you can show more than one if you have multiples.

Great! Thanks for implementing those changes

I just tried to download it again, but it tells me "Download not available"

  • aCalendar+: a different user interface for Gmail calendar (needs Gmail calendar as the back end) with some great additional features
question: why did you go with acalendar instead of digical or something else?

I honestly don't remember whether I tried DigiCal or not. I know I tried a few calendar apps and finally settled for aCalendar+ (I purchased the premium version)

Digical looks great, but I don't think that what it offers on top of what aCalendar has (eg. weather forecasts) is interesting to me

Both integrate seamlessly with Google Calendar, which is a must for me, and have similar available views. aCalendar has some nice vertical and horizontal swiping actions that I don't know if DigiCal has. Also, aCalendar lets you manage Tasks, which is something that I don't think Digical has

These are the features of aCalendar+, from its publishers:

FEATURES
● intuitive navigation between day, week, month and agenda view
● 7 powerful widgets
● year view
● lots of design and view customizations
● Google Calendar management
● per-event colors (even if not supported by the event's calendar)
● flexible recurrences
● birthdays from your contacts (or without contacts)
● uses Android's native calendar backend and synchronization
● moon phases
● mini month or graphical week overview in day and week view
● free with ads and some one-time IAPs

EXTRA FEATURES (aCalendar+ or as In-App-Purchase)
● Public holidays (and school holidays for some countries) - configurable in the calendar list
● More colors (theme/UI colors, background colors, calendar colors, event colors)
● Business features (Invite attendees, link contacts, free/busy, private, profiles, share as ICS)
● Tasks (manage Google Tasks or tasks from CalDAV/OpenTasks)
● No ads (removes the occasional ad)
♥ Tapir Apps donates 10% of all revenue to rainforest conservation through our friends at World Land Trust

USAGE
● move forward and backward in the calendar by swiping vertically
● switch between calendar views with a horizontal swipe (opens the day or week you start the swipe gesture on) or double-tap for day view
● tap to open a calendar event
● long-press to add new calendar event
● long-press on mini-month to go to today or jump to date
● configurable actions on 3-finger-tap, tap on title, volume buttons
● long press an event in day view to drag to a different time

As they say, "there's an app for that", viz. List My Apps.

Thank you! I should have thought that there might be an app for that  :)  I'll try it and edit my previous post with the appropriate links

Also, I didn't know the "viz." expression. English is not my native language. So now I know something new (even though it's technically latin, but still)

BTW, I don't know if this is still valid, (it's four days old and I've already upgraded so I can't check), but both the standard free Android and iOS version of City Maps 2Go can be upgraded to the Pro or Premium version for free via an upgrade code. [HotDealsUK]

Android: CityMaps2Go Plan Trips Travel Guide Offline Maps
iOS: CityMaps2Go Offline Map

Codes: PROSUPP or PREMSUPP for Pro or Premium upgrade, respectively.

Thanks! I've just tried it and it still works

Thanks for this useful little tool

I can confirm that MSE on Windows 7 still detects it as malware. I had to add it to the exclusions list

A small bug (?) that I noticed: Systemus doesn't detect the MAC address of my PCIe wifi card. It just displays "N/A"

is there anything else that could be particularly useful that you might want?

I think the Default Gateway and/or DNS Server(s) would nicely complement the IP address

After a (fairly) long hiatus, I'm posting in this great forum again  :)

Here's a list of most of the interesting Android apps I'm using. I didn't include some I use a lot because they are either too niche or local (country)-specific

These are the ones that I think will be of most interest to other forum members:

  • aCalendar+: a different user interface for Gmail calendar (needs Gmail calendar as the back end) with some great additional features
  • Adobe Acrobat: the Android version of Acrobat Reader. I just prefer to read pdf files with it than with other, more general, readers
  • Bromite: in their own words "Bromite is Chromium plus ad blocking and privacy enhancements". Not my default browser, though
  • CPU-Z: the Android version of the program. Lots of information about the smartphone's hardware
  • Droid Info: similar to CPU-Z, but with some different info reported about the smartphone's hardware
  • Flipboard: a magazine/RSS reader with a great interface. Can be customized with your own interests/news sources
  • FolderSync: allows you to sync folders either within the device (including the SD Card, if present) or between the device and a cloud folder (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.)
  • Forvo: pronunciation app. Ideal for example for when you're wondering how to pronounce that difficult foreign word
  • JuiceSSH: a nice SSH app. Can be enhanced with plugins
  • Keepass2Android: a great app to keep your Keepass database available on your smartphone
  • LAN drive: allows you to have a SMB server on your phone, accesible by your PC, for example. I use it to transfer files wirelessly between the phone and PC
  • Moon+ Reader Pro: a wonderful reader app. After trying a few others, I settled for this one to read eBooks on my phone
  • Movie Mate: an app that connect to your Trakt account and allows you to manage your movies (Watchlist, History, Ratings, etc.). There's alsoSeries Mate for TV series
  • Network Cell Info Lite: gives you information about the signal strength of both your cell connection and your wifi connection. Lots of other info available (cell towers, maps, etc.)
  • Nodescope: the best storage usage app I could find. If you're wondering what's using your phone's internal memory, as well as the SD card, this app has a very intuitive way of presenting that information
  • Nova Launcher: to me, the best launcher for Android. It's a matter of personal preference though as there are a lot of diferent launchers out there (Lawnchair Launcher seems to have good reviews, for example)
  • Opera: my default browser. I just prefer its user interface to Bromite's. Otherwise, I would use Bromite
  • Phonograph: a music (/audio) app. Not too different from others, but simple and with a nice interface
  • Ping Tool: as the name implies, a ping app to check different (customizable) hosts. But also with a lot of other features: DNS lookup, IP scanner, etc
  • RealCalc: a calculator app. Has the interface of a classic scientific calculator
  • SD Maid: a maintenance app. Allows you to free some space by deleting unnecessary files and folders and to "vacuum" SQL databases
  • SkyView Free: just point it to the night sky and discover the names of the stars you're watching. Also planets, the ISS, the different constellations, etc. Wonderful app for those interested in astronomy
  • Snapseed: a great photo editing app. Bought by Google a while ago. Very powerful, but at the same time not too complex. I just wish it would allow me to use a custom folder to save the edited images
  • TED: the official TED Talks app for Android. Lots and lots of interesting content there (as those familiar with TED Talks know)
  • VLC: video player app. I don't do a lot of video viewing on my phone and VLC is more than enough for my needs
  • Wifi Analyzer: for quickly finding the signal strength of the local and neighboring wifi netwoks
List made using List My Apps

I apologize for not including the links to each app. Most of them I install from either Google Play or F-Droid
List updated with the links for each app, thanks to the suggestion of List my Apps by rjbull

Hey!  :)

Another "lost one" here. You can strike out my name from the list :D

It's true, I haven't been here for a while, but I'm glad to see that this great community is still going strong. Thank you Jesse for being the driving force behind it. And congratulations everyone for this 10th anniversary  :beerchug:

I'll try to come back more often and hopefully make a post or two before the 20th anniversary  :P

I didn't know about the free edition of Omnifind, Shades

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, it has been discontinued:
  • Effective September 22, 2010, this product is withdrawn from marketing.
  • Effective June 30, 2011, this product will be withdrawn from support.

Besides, its software requirements list give away its age:
Supported operating systems

    32-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 4, Update 3
    32-bit SUSE Linux Enterprise 10
    32-bit Windows XP SP2
    32-bit Windows 2003 Server SP1

Supported browsers

The administration console and the search page are browser-based. The following browsers are supported:

    Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
    Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and 2.0 (required for Linux installations)

Cookies must be enabled to use the administration console and the search page.

Definitely not cutting edge :)

Anyway, if you're currently using it and experience no issues with it, I would continue using it too. But I certainly wouldn't choose it for a new installation.

Apparently Omnifind Yahoo Edition was a victim of the Microsoft-Yahoo search agreement a couple of years back. It looks like IBM didn't quite like the idea of distributing a product which would have to include Microsoft's search engine (as a result of Yahoo dropping theirs): Yahoo deal puts IBM, Microsoft in enterprise search pickle

Looks indeed interesting, especially for the amount of items that can be stored in the search database.

The 10 million items figure is for the "Complete" installation, which assumes an independent SQL Server installation. The recommended limit for the "Stand alone" installation is about 300,000 items. Keep in mind that these are not hard limits, but recommended ones based on the performance of the database engine. So, in short, it's:
  • Complete installation of SS 2010 Express -> SQL Server -> up to 10 million items (aprox.)
  • Stand-alone installation of SS 2010 Express -> SQL Server Express -> up to 300,000 items (aprox.)

Do you know of any site/blog that did a benchmark test with several of the freely available LAN search engines?

No, I couldn't find benchmarks, but I did find a couple of pages with relevant info:
Bottom line:
quite simply if you don't want to shell out money Solr/Lucene or Fast (now MSSE) is really about the best you can do

A quick search in the forum returned no results about this Microsoft product. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet here, so I decided to post about it.

Search Server 2010 Express is a standalone search server which is free and easy to deploy. It delivers powerful, web-style search across your corporate intranet sites quickly, easily, and for free. It can search all your content sources, including SharePoint sites, file shares (some file types require additional filters, see below), websites, Exchange Public Folders, and third party repositories.

Quote from Microsoft:
Microsoft Search Server 2010 Express is an enterprise search solution that is free to download, simple and flexible to configure, and powerful enough to meet your needs.

Full description of features: Microsoft Search Server Express

A feature comparison matrix of SS 2010 Express with its predecessor, Search Server 2008 Express, and also with Sharepoint Server 2010: Microsoft Search Server Express: Compare

And a couple of screenshots:

scrn-search-center-marketing.jpg

scrn-central-administration.JPG

Search Server 2010 Express can be downloaded for free from this page: Download details: Microsoft Search Server 2010 Express
Software and hardware requirements are listed there too.

To complete this post, let me list some additional resources about SS 2010 Express:

So, is it really free? Surprisingly, yes. Of course you need a properly licensed Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Server 2008 R2 to install it on, plus the hardware requirements are hefty, but the software itself is completely free.

So far I have only found one caveat, which is only relevant if you decide to install SS 2010 Express on a domain controller.
There are two modes for installing Search Server 2010 Express:
  • Complete – allows you to specify a SQL Server installation
  • Stand-alone – automatically installs and configures an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express (which is also free)
Of course, the second alternative is the easier (and cheaper!) one. BUT, when you install SS 2010 Express on a domain controller, only the first option is available, which means you already have to have a running SQL Server for SS 2010 Express to use it as its database engine.

All in all, a great free product for LAN search, which should be better known.

There's gotta be a catch somewhere (in the rye perhaps). - I did save the guy's .reg file on my thumbdrive just in case it catches me...  :D

I thought it was a catchER  ;)
Very witty, though  :Thmbsup:

FavLoc 1.2.1 for Firefox 4, hard to find and not yet available at Mozilla:

 (see attachment in previous post)
The author is Addon Manager at Mozilla's.

I was a user of FavLoc up until I made the move to Firefox 4. I wasn't aware that there was a (semi-hidden) compatible version of FavLoc, which made me look for an alternative add-on that worked with Firefox 4. Luckily I found Save file To, which I now like even more than FavLoc.

20
There are many other add-ons to do full page capture.

Here's a vote for another such add-on: Abduction
Works great!

Curt, I don't know what exactly you're using Babylon for but I cover my dictionary/translation needs inside firefox with the following add-ons:
  • Wikilook: Leading dictionary lookup add-on. Fast, light, open source tool that define words for you without need to open new tabs or windows. Wiktionary & Wikipedia. Ctrl or Shift or Alt + RightMouseButton click. Now with thesaurus. 70+ languages supported!
  • Fast translation: Easy tranlation tool using Google Translate. Select text and right click to translate. Press CTRL+SHIFT+L to open translation window.
  • Globefish: Globefish assists users in reading and writing in a foreign language: (1) users can translate any foreign text simply by highlighting it; (2) users can compare usage frequency of different expressions to check errors and find a better expression.

21
Apparently the highly regarded (but not free) BeyondCompare is able to do both things. This thread from their forum explains how:
http://www.scooterso...howthread.php?t=7350

Posts 1 to 6 in that thread cover your first requirement (ignoring sizes and dates), while posts 7 and 8 cover the second, and trickier, requirement (ignoring file extensions)

Hope it helps

22
what I really want is people to be able to comment on my photos on *my* site with a Facebook account

Maybe you already know this, but just in case.
Apparently you can do what you want with Smugmug: Contact a Hero and Bug Fixes – February 12, 2009 « The SmugMug Blog :)

We took advantage of Facebook Connect so you can now login to your Facebook account when leaving a comment at SmugMug

23
I'm glad you found the information useful, JavaJones
I agree with your views about Facebook's Terms of Service regarding pictures. I also don't feel comfortable leaving my pics on facebook, but I don't go as far as deleting them regularly. I guess I'll just take my chances and hope they never choose one of my wild party pics for one of their ads :D

I really wish there were a better, unified alternative. Maybe something with Facebook Connect so my FB friends could easily comment, but with better ToS than FB itself. Hmm...

A couple of alternatives, using 23, that are not exactly what you want but come pretty close, I think:

  • When you post a photograph on www.23hq.com, you have a "Post to facebook" button on each page so you can easily transfer that pic to your facebook wall and have your friends see it and comment. Afterwards, you can delete that posting from you wall and the original pic stays in 23
  • You could use a facebook RSS app, such as the popular RSS Grafitti, to automatically read your RSS feed at 23 (they do provide an RSS feed for each user) and publish those pictures to your facebook wall. Everything should be automatic. Every time you upload a pic to 23, that photograph would show up on your facebook wall. Of course, you can later delete that post from facebook if so you wish.

I haven't tried any of those alternatives myself but they should work without much trouble.

Have any of you considered self-hosting vs. the big hosted sites discussed here? If so, why did you decide against it?

It did cross my mind for a moment but I thought it'd be too much trouble to set up a full gallery application, on top of the required database, just to post pictures. Plus, I'd have to keep it secure and updated. Maybe I'm wrong and it's simpler than it looks, but I decided against it.
Anyway, here's a link to a comparison chart of photo gallery software at Wikipedia: Comparison of photo gallery software

24
I know I'm late with this reply (hopefully not late enough to be accused of necroposting :)), but I wanted to add some information that may be useful if someone finds this thread through a search.
I've been looking for a while for a good Flickr alternative that doesn't suffer from Flickr's shortcomings (censorship, only 200 pictures visible for free accounts, etc.), and I've reached a conclusion: while feature-wise there are indeed good, even better, alternatives to Flickr, community-wise there are none.
So, if sharing your pics with as many people as possible and participating in active discussion groups and commenting other people's work is important to you, you'll just have to put up with Flickr.

BUT, if those aspects are not essential to you, there are some great alternative, both free and paid. In the "paid" category, smugmug, phanfare and a few other sites are reportedly very good, but I didn't research them exhaustively because I was looking for a free alternative to Flickr.
In the "free" category, there are quite a lot of websites. Unfortunately, most of them lack features present in Flickr and/or are almost inactive. Here's a non-exhaustive list of photo sharing website from wikipedia: List of photo sharing websites

Let me quicky point out that I'm ignoring websites like Snapfish, Shutterfly, Webshots, etc. in this comparison because, although they are very popular, they have a different target audience.

Zooomr seemed to be a good site, but it looks like it's closed and won't reopen.
Ipernity, which was one of the websites evaluated by Tomos, is particularly good and would be one of my top 2 choices if it weren't for the fact that it seems to have been abandoned at some point during 2010. No new developments have been announced and the developer team's blog has no new posts since September 2010.

There are some other alternatives, but I wouldn't like to make this post too long, so I'll just jump to what I consider the best free photo sharing website: 23
Yes, that's the name: 23
It has basically all the features Flickr does, and probably some more (albums, slideshows, groups, tags, comments, calendar, etc.). The only restriction for free accounts is that you can only upload 30 pictures per month, but they allow you to upload 300 the first week after you sign up, so you can transfer your pics from somewhere else. Although it too doesn't seem to be in very active development, it looks in a better state than Ipernity and Zooomr.
In particular, I think it does fulfill Tomos' ideal requirements:

My ideal would be with:
  • decent slideshow style view but where one moves manaully from one image to the next
  • manually sortable display - i.e. move this foto up/down forwards/backwards in the display - all sites seem to sort only by upload

If you're looking for a good alternative to Flickr, 23 is definitely worth checking out.

25
ShadowProtect is a great disk imaging program indeed, and extremely useful for Windows XP systems. But with Windows 7 including a built-in system image backup I wonder what advantages does ShadowProtect have now over the built-in Windows alternative. At least in your case (system drive dying), it looks like the built in program would have saved you too. But maybe I'm wrong.
Anyone with more experience with both alternatives care to comment on this?
Thanks
