Living Room / Re: Where did your DC user I.D come from?
« on: June 04, 2009, 07:03 AM »
Y'see, when people see my username, the first thing that often springs to their mind is "past tense of shake". But boy, is that wrong! So now i will share my incredibly epic story of how i got this here username... Which, conveniently, has stuck for several years, occasionally being replaced by names with more or less similar pronunciation, such as "Shewk", "Schewk", "Scheouwk" and so on. Not in any forums, though, where I'm consistently known as Shook. And while it does share the initial letter with my first name, it has nothing to do with it. Now, on to the story...

I was playing a game called Crusaders of Space: Open Range, which is a Space Invaders-style game with much better graphics. In this game, whenever you had shot down a new type of enemy ship, you would get some information about the ship type, such as speed, armor and firepower. You also got the name of the ship, which more often than not included a nickname as well. So, i had just shot down a tough, blocky ship (the ship itself is irrelevant, really), and when i went to look at the ships info, i saw nothing less than a miracle written down in text... "Shook", the ship was called. Ever since i saw that, I've used that name consistently, not even knowing that it was the past tense of "shake" until much later. Also, the game is strictly singleplayer, so I've not taken the nickname from anybody. =P

And there you have it, the wonderful story of how i got the name "Shook".

Computer-related hate train departing now, toot-toot!

- Pop-ups. Seriously, they're just obstructions, and something tells me that the amount of clicks is about 1 per 10000 pop-ups.
- Excessively animated banner ads (HELLO ADVENTUREQUEST). They use a lot of bandwidth, which slows down both browsing and flash games.
- Anti-virus/spyware programs that say "Oh hay you have like one million problems on your PC, buy this product to get rid of them!".
- Programs that crash and freeze up for no reason. (I think i stated this one previously, but that was about video games. =P)
- Programs that get all "Our program is THE BEST PROGRAM EVAR!", after which you find out that it's a bunch of... Poo.
- Time limited trial versions of any kind. Seriously, just give me a cut-down demo without timer, and i'll be happy, and i might even buy the product.
- Computers that start so slowly that a european forest slug could crawl all the way across the monitor before the computer was ready. (School computers, grr! *Shakes fist*)
- Blue screen of death. I don't think this needs any explanation.
- Unintuitive interfaces. Sure, i can live with them, but i'd rather not have to.
- The Match 3 genre of games. The first few were pretty good, but the next million? Not as much. Even the few twists the developers sometimes apply can't save it from the demon that is known as "hopeless cloning".

... Off the top of my head. ;)

Ahh, Plants vs. Zombies. Great game, that. Brilliantly made, and crammed full of humor and personality. Even zombies, who are usually seen as horrifying undead monsters who will eat peoples brains, manage to look comical without being ridiculous, while still being brain-eaters. Also, their expressions are downright priceless when they take a bite of garlic. :D
The varying mini-games on every 5th level are also quite fun, and break up what could have been a monotonous flow.

Well, there are a number of things that tick me off, considering my bad temper, but there are some that stand above everything else:
- When people intentionally take and/or mess with my stuff, without my permission. Even more so if the intention is to annoy me.
- When people frame me, as in, they say that i did something that i didn't do in reality. Even if people were kidding, i would take it as a grave offense.
- Being interrupted repeatedly while speaking. Luckily not an issue over the internet. ;)
- When people prevent me from doing whatever I'm doing or what I'm about to do (scratching my head, laying my arm across my stomach or whatever).
- Constantly losing at the same point in a video game.
- Video games that crash repeatedly and without any reason. (I'm looking at you, Fallout 3!)

... Can't be good for my mental health.

My reaction was neutral/positive (as in, funny-positive) most of the time. However!
Spoiler
The thought of a tapeworm dangling out of my ass repulsed me.
