Yo mouser and all,

Life is busy; I have moved over to scientific Python development and tech support. Cross-platform, though mostly working on Mac. I still get warm fuzzies when I see a DC newsletter.

Still full of appreciation and admiration for this quirky, skilled, generous community and its q,s,g founder.

Thanks, Mouser. I will wait patiently by the mouse hole ;)

A basic question from someone who's been depending on FARR for many years, but hasn't really followed its enhancements for most of that time: With this latest update, how do I get a CPanel applet to appear in history? Before this update, this "just worked"; now CPanel itself appears in history, but not the applets. Also, manually adjusting the applet scores does not affect their scores in the search window. Thanks!

That's some serious long-term follow-up, mouser. Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR 2.90.02 not useable
« on: September 12, 2010, 01:51 PM »
Reinstalled 2.87.03, works fine. Redownloaded 2.90.02, install file is identical to previous download of it. Reinstalled, problem is the same. From status line: takes 5 minutes to scan all directories. Biggest dirs (with 1-2 k file count) take one minute each to scan. But it's not the download time that this the biggest difference. v2.87 takes over 2 minutes to scan all dirs, because I haven't eliminated caches and such from the FARR scan path. The biggest diff is that when 2.87 is scanning, it's highly responsive. When 2.90 is running, it is (totally?) unresponsive until it has finished scanning. Then when I press another key, it's back to square 1.

Only thing that's unusual on my system right now is that Diskeeper defragger is working in background, but (1) it doesn't bother 2.87, (2) it doesn't bother anybody else (it's running in deep background, very polite), and (3) I think that DK only works on a few files at a time, and 2.90 is sluggish on all directories, every time. Oh, and it's also very slow (tens to hundreds of seconds) to respond to a right-click on its tray icon, vs instantaneous for 2.87

Reinstalled 2.87.03. I'll stick with it for now, may be able to re-test a new version but not much more than that until next weekend. Thanks mouser, and sorry to bear bad news.

Find And Run Robot / FARR 2.90.02 not useable
« on: September 12, 2010, 11:32 AM »
I updated from v2.87.03 to v2.90.02 several days ago (as an aside, that's how FARR id's itself in the troubleshooting log and to DCU, but both the helpfile and the EXE properties identify it as 2.90.01, a little confusing.)

Since I updated, FARR has become unusable. I'll press Break and type a few keys which appear in the entry field, after which FARR is unresponsive for long enough for me to lose all interest... maybe 30 seconds, maybe 3 minutes. For now, I've just unloaded it, hoping for a fix... how can I function without FARR??!

Nothing else on the system seems sluggish. Windows XP SP3.

Thanks!

Sorry, mouser I've been unavailable for almost 2 months, but I've now updated and will let you know if the problem recurs. FWIW, after updating FARR to 2.90.02, it now shows "version on web" as 2.90.01. No harm, but seems unnecessarily confusing. Also, for both FARR and (especially) DCU, the online version history (and I presume the help generally) are out of date:

DcUpdater / DCUpdater redundancy
« on: July 24, 2010, 03:52 PM »
This scenario has occurred many times and is quite frustrating:

1. DCUpdater runs and suggests updates. Other stuff going on, no time to respond.

2. A few days later, DCUpdater runs again. All the same updates are suggested, added to the end of the list. Maybe I'm away from home for a few weeks with my computer on remote access. By the time I get home, the list of 10-ish suggested updates has grown to a list of 100 suggested updates, with the same ones being listed again and again and again. Yech.

Thanks.

One other small issue, really just aesthetic... if the same description is used for multiple consecutive entries, and each is accepted by pressing arrow key then Enter, then the the CR characters accumulate.

Version 2.87.03 - May 4, 2010
· [MinorFeature] appcapappendmemo now auto scrolls to bottom of memo.
· [MinorFeature] new alias launch string to explicitly go to end of memo  (gomemobottom)

Thanks!

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Release: Anuran
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:11 AM »
I just updated Anuran for the first time since January (I do wish that DCUpdater were able to include Anuran in its automatic update list). Very nice that we can now sort the log files in reverse order, keeping the current log at top.

But my dream Anuview sort would let me quickly see all recent entries (across several log files) in entry order (ascending or descending, don't really care). We're almost there now, but FWIW, here are the small remaining issues:

1. The file sort order is not persistent, have to re-sort every time AnuView is opened (ok, only 2 clicks!)

2. Then the files are in descending date order, but the entries within each file are in ascending time order, so the merged entry list is up/down/up/down.

3. An alternative which works around (2), using the default ascending file order, has 2 problems: The current log is out of sequence, and it takes lots of scrolling to get down to the most recent files. So another solution would be an option to keep current.anu at the end of the file list, and to open anuview with the list pre-scrolled to the end of the list.

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: console output to memo
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:02 AM »
While I didn't find answers by searching help or forum, I have found some answers by browsing the forum.

I learned that it's better to use:
appcap python c:\mypath\clipsum.py;;;showmemo %lastappcap%

Which does not answer 2 & 3 but makes them moot (because it clears the memo so scrolling and clearing are unnecessary.)

It does answer 4 (use three semicolons, which I now see is mentioned under "Alias launching tricks" in the help file.)

And (1)?

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / console output to memo
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:46 AM »
Using virtual launch string "appcapappendmemo" in a simple alias:
appcapappendmemo python c:\mypath\clipsum.py

1. Even though .py is an executable extension on my system (python), if I specify the command as only a .py file, it says "Error launching..." It works ok as shown above.

2. The output of the script goes nicely into the memo display, but the memo display does not scroll at all, must be scrolled manually each time to see the output.

3. How to clear the memo display?

4. This is moot because I ended up displaying all text from the python script, but I wanted to use the "showmemo" virtual launch string but could not find in the documentation how to combine two virtual launch strings in one alias command. Where is this described?

Thanks!

I never hibernate but had been away for 5 days with the system running. It's possible that DCU tray icon came on some days ago.

DcUpdater / 1-time bug... DCU would not exit
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:36 PM »
Just FYI....

DCU showing in tray, but no updates needed (this seems odd, don't recall this happening before).
Clicked big Exit button, nothing happened. Clicked exit in tray right-click, no change.
Killed from Task Manager, restarted, exited ok.

Seems like it would help troubleshooting if the operations log included a time stamp.

Is this new with the latest version or has this been an ongoing thing?
Certainly with last night's version (..23). Not sure how much earlier because I have been assuming user error and not paying much attention (sorry), but if I had to guess I would say maybe a few versions earlier?

Bug: several times a day, Anuran popup text field is blank upon popup even though previous entry was not blank.

v1.0.22 - 2010-01-20

Give this version a shot, folks, and let me know if the "extra lines" issue is resolved.
So far so good. Thanks, skwire!

Just a suggestion, but how about requiring a SHIFT+ENTER for a new line/carriage return? Seems to me, most users of this program do not need a new line often.

have a look in the options :) - on the pop-up tab you can set the Enter/Control behaviour (choice is Ctrl+Enter or Enter for new line & the other for close popup)

Yes, but that doesn't work properly. Even with the default setting (Enter for close popup), pressing Enter often inserts a spurious newline into the log file.

Yes, this is a recurring issue that is sporadic enough that it's hard to code around.  Let me see what I can do about stripping any trailing newlines.
That would be great. It's not very sporadic here... my log files are filed with blank lines.

No: Windows XP, full admin rights, had no trouble archiving earlier.

<exploring>... Aha! Last time, I tried "Archive Now" from the tray icon. This time, I tried it from the options dialog, and saw the error message "current.anu file not found. Nothing to archive." Recall that my data files are not in the default location. So the popup and anuview have no trouble finding them, but apparently the archiver is not so aware.
