Thanks!!!
These fonts are beautiful.

Not mentioned in the "makeuseof" list is PDF24 - my favorite.   Free, easy to use, no crapware installed, it does not bug me permanently with annoying updates (some others try all over again to install the crapware - e.g. PDFcreator), plenty of options (e.g. printing to picture files).

Living Room / Re: What about Condaleezza Rice and Dropbox?
« on: July 26, 2014, 12:27 AM »
The Rice "hiring" proves that the dropbox leadership only cares about influence and power in addition to money -  not about any morals.  This was a move to buy political influence; certainly not "intelligence"   :D  (in whatever from).

OT: For me, moving the taskbar to the left screen edge made laptop screens much more tolerable.

The convenience of carrying large amounts of data in a tiny format is enticing and a bit scary.
I assumed to have lost my tiny USB stick a few weeks ago - fortunately false alarm.
Nevertheless I am looking for a way to keep my data encrypted on the stick an still easily and quickly accessible.
Any ideas?

Sorry: just found this thread, which is still very helpful.

For somebody new to note-taking software, what would be the main advantages of Rightnote over Evernote?
Thanks in advance!

General Software Discussion / Re: Sagelight Image Editor
« on: September 30, 2013, 12:57 AM »
BTW, the new noise removal tools in sagelight provides first class quality results!
http://sagelightedit...uction-beta-release/
The lens blur tools are great as well.

No, sagelight  is not a competitor to photoshop or photoline - after all you can open only one image at a time (as one example for some of the restrictions - Sagelight is not a universal image manipulator).
However, for an editor that is focused on realistic photo enhancement it is great and it is a bargain.   Sagelight provides an entire image editor at the price of a single purpose plug-in.

Living Room / Re: Anyone from German, I have a question for you.
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:59 AM »
This must have been a very misinformed article.  Schools are regulated by the states in Germany, but none of the states is crazy enough to outlaw education.  Education is free in Germany; including universities.
Elementary school and with it compulsory education starts at age 6;  Kindergarten (not compulsory) at age 3, I guess.  Usually kids start leaning how to read and write in elementary school, beginning with the first grade - this is unlike the US (where they believe kids have to start reading in kindergarten) and unlike Finland (said to have the best schools - where kids supposedly start reading at age 7; http://www.newameric...ungest-children-9029).

Copy works great for me.  So far, just as good and fast as dropbox - but more space.

... and hopefully great alternatives ( e.g.  PhotoLine for photoshop,  Corel Draw & Serif Draw & Inkscape  for illustrator; there is an endless number of worthy acrobat alternatives ) will get more visibility.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Headset recommendations
« on: March 29, 2013, 12:19 AM »
For what it is worth,
I have been extremely happy with two recent earphone purchases - these are not gaming headsets, though, and they are not for bass heads either.  Both sets are very balanced and neutral instead, and the sound is very satisfying already at lower volumes. The earphones I had before (Sennheiser, JVC, Audiotechnica) all started to sound really good only at elevated volumes.

The Nox Scout (http://www.nox-audio...com/Products/Scout-2) are balanced armature in ear phones which you can find as low as $25 currently.  This is a speaker technology usually found in much more expensive earphones and these are way better than my more expensive earphones, one of which is also a balanced armature design.  I am going to get a second set, just in case.

The Philips uptown over-the-ear headphones provide very efficient noise insulation and a wonderfully clear sound.  In addition, they are comfortable on my huge head - which happens very rarely.  In contrast to one reviewer the cable and volume control work just fine for me.  I got a "refurbished" unit for $50.

Living Room / Re: LXLE Linux anyone?
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:48 AM »
Hi,
does any of these light Linuxes render fonts similarly to windows out of the box or with minimal fuss?
(are hinting and subpixel smoothing used and actually producing tolerable results?).  I would like to run Linx on a netbook, but so far I really have problems dealing with the (distracting) font rendering (Suse, Ubuntu).

Living Room / Re: Mid-range DSLR Camera Recommendations
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:39 AM »
Just one more very late opinion. If you are into sports photography or birding a DSLR is still required.
If not, than DSLRs are outdated.  Mirrorless is the way to go.  Even there, the autofocus of the olympus and panasonic top models is almost, almost already equaling the phase detection based AF systems of DSLRs.
I would suggest to dump the annoying mirror, for usable autofocus in video, real live view, focus peaking, and much better portability, touchscreen UI, etc. There is no way I would want to go back to mirror flapping systems.  The sony alpha DSLT cameras (working with minolta and sony lenses; they have a non-moving mirror) is a great compromise, though for sports and birding like demands.
Sure, most people are still buying CaNikons DSLRs, because of the deeply ingrained image and their marketing big bucks - but innovation is happening elsewhere.  Please note that the mirrorless offerings from Canon and Nikon themselves are carefully designed so that they can't compete with DSLRs (thus they can't compete with the mirrorless systems from Olympus, Panasonic, Sony, Fujifilm, or Samsung either).

General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis Backup
« on: December 24, 2012, 12:13 AM »
I had good experiences with Paragon so far.  Their free stuff is good enough most of the time.
Acronis "Nonstop Backup" feature was a total failure on my wife's PC - it turned out be "No Backup"; no working backup anyhow.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does the browser Opera suck?
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:48 AM »
I have a hunch that you might have perhaps a little bit too much security software on your computer.  Just a hunch...
My opera browser has no problems with the websites mentioned (no such problems in general) and I very, very rarely encounter this redirection warning.

General Software Discussion / Re: yet another file manager thread...
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:31 PM »
An interactive addressbar (aka navigable breadcrumbs) would be very appreciated in XYplorer
- the best breadcrumb implementation I remember is in  Ac Browser Plus (one can intuitively navigate through the entire file system).

While Don is around I will ask one of those questions all developers hate  :-[

zip, rar support any closer? thanks
Last time I looked it was on the roadmap.

The Nexus 7 does not even support external memory through the USB port - which is not a matter of cost.

http://www.eweek.com...ch-Tablets-656002/1/

I guess Google intentionally wants to force your data into "the cloud" - more specifically their cloud. The Nexus phones are also the only (?) android phones without mSD card ports.

Thanks!!!   this is a veryhelpful review.

CleverPrint  has a perhaps a few features less than the competition - but does everything I need it to do (and also does PDF and PNG conversion).

Hi,

Any comparisons of CleverPrint with PriPrinter and Fineprint ?

This is around $10 which is a good deal.
$10 more for 2 years of upgrades, probably worth it, if it is in the league of the other two.

I once purchased a Clipmate license about 7 years ago (maybe), but ended up de-installing it much sooner than expected because it slowed down my PC considerably.  I did test several newer versions and still had the same problem.

I'm another person who has tried several clip managers, but none I've tried has come close to ClipMate, which has been my favorite for more than (gasp) 15 years.  Unfortunately, ClipMate's developer seems to have disappeared from the forum and, perhaps, from working on the software as well.  So while I continue to use and value ClipMate, I'm now keeping my eyes open for an eventual replacement.  I took advantage of the BitsduJour offer for Clipstory, but I haven't (yet) installed it.  But belated thanks, erikts, for calling attention to the offer.

Thanks a lot for this maxi-review!!!
Very interesting - I am testing the software right now.
