you dont have a bad version, just me being a bit sloppy with version numbers.  however i think if you re-install the new update it should say you have version 1.28.01 and stop offering an update (even though you really have 1.28.02).  it shouldnt say you have 1.26.01 if you get new version.

Still no luck. I tried a fresh download and install. Same thing. So I un-installed dcupdater, renamed:
C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\DcUpdater
to
C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\DcUpdater-old
and
C:\Program Files\DcUpdater
to
C:\Program Files\DcUpdater-old
then did another fresh download (to a different name) and install - STILL got the same thing! It says installed version 1.26.01, version on the web 1.28.01. Help - About says I am running 1.28.02. As does looking at the Program Properties - Details.

There is a directory
C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\Keys
which I did not rename ...

Any directories or registry keys I should clean up?

Sorry about this, and thanks for your help.

DcUpdater / 1.28.02?
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:24 PM »
A short while back, I got an update notice for dcupdater - I downloaded and installed USING dcupdater - I still get the message, saying I need to upgrade from 1.26.01 to 1.28.01 - but when I do Help - About, it says I am running 1.28.02! I just did a new download and install - same version situation.

The dcupdatersetup.exe that I downloaded is 2,121,728 bytes. dcupdater.exe is 3,004,416, and does show an internal version # of 1.28.2.0, modified on 10/10/10 at 7:15PM.

Did I get a bad version somehow?

Thanks
Dan

Dan,

Try IMAPSize for your IMAP mail accounts. It will backup all of your IMAP messages locally and it also has a really good search facility for those backed up messages.

Jim

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Well with all the respect I thing there is no program on earth that can beat Everything 1.2 in terms of speed for indexing and search through large amount of data. I talking about less than a minute to index 500GB with 360000 files and a fraction of a sec to search ANY file. Check the author's site for more info.

Otherwise I found Visual CD far better than locate for indexing CDs, DVD and other removable media.

Looks interesting, but no indexing of network volumes - unless you can run a server function on the remote system. But I am using Jungledisk to store data on Amazon's S3 cloud servers, and I want to index those files as well. Locate works on them.

Actually, the reason I came to locate in the first place, was becuase I used Copernic, and they dropped support for network drives in their free version. "Everything" might work for my home computers, but not for cloud files. I do miss indexing file contents - and I cannot index email with *anything* since I started using IMAP and left the mail on the servers ... Oh, well.

Yup, and that doesn't do "content-aware" search, it searches raw contents.

And no wanting to beat a dead horse - altho I have probably already done that - I thought that a PDF file where you could SELECT the text (ie, not an image) would contain the text as text - with other stuff around it - so a phrase search might not work - but I thought a simple text search would. But ya' learn something new each day ...

I think I will use locate for a while, and see how often I really need content searching. The best example I have is: I keep my receipts for online purchases as PDF files, and I occasionally ask myself "where did I buy that last laptop battery?" or "I got a unknown credit card charge for $19.95 - did I buy something?" The first question I can normally answer from the file name - the second is a little harder - I hate web sites where the credit card charge is for a name you never saw before - they just mentioned it in passing.

Locate is designed to serve the same purpose on Windows that GNU locate does on *nix boxes. It only indexes file metadata, not the contents of files.

I know it does not index the contents, but you can search for files containing specific text, on the advanced screen - that's what I was using.

I have a question about searching the CONTENT of PDF files. I tried Locate32, and it finds some content but not others. I guess you really need something that understands PDF content? I have been using Copernic, and it finds things that Locate32 does not find. And when I open the PDF with a text editor, it does not find the content either ... But I can select the text in a PDF viewer. So it is definitely text, not image.

I started looking for something else when Copernic moved network drive support to its paid product. Locate32 looks great - but I do occasionally need to find content in PDF files.

Any suggestions?

Thanks - I thought have thought of both of those solutions.

Find And Run Robot / FARR v2.00.145??
« on: April 15, 2008, 12:08 PM »
I know (think?) this web site had an outage a while back, and had to be restored - but that was a while back, and everything still seems to refer to v2.00.144. I am running v2.00.145. And I *thought* I actually was still waiting for the FINAL version 2 release - which presumably would be higher that 145.

I have not installed the latest version from the website to see what it says it is after installation - cause I don't necessarily want to lose the higher version I have ...

So -my question is - is 144 really the latest version? Where would I have gotten 145? What is the absolute latest version?

Thanks
Dan

I don't see how placing messages into a Thunderbird mailbox folder archives them.  Unless you place them into a folder that is in a separate Profile; a Profile that you don't use to retrieve or work with your emails.  One created just for storage.  (Come to think of it, that's not a bad solution on the face of it!)

crono's (OP) initial post here asks how to archive the messages because Thunderbird is slowing down due to the size of his mail store.  If you just move them into a separate folder I would expect T-Bird to be just as slow as if you left them in your working folders.

I'll agree that moving them around in Thunderbird is not a true archive - but I guess I had not experienced, or was not aware of, Tbird slowing down as the total # of messages it manages increases. Is it true beyond startup, and perhaps shutdown? (I probably only restart Tbird once or twice a week - and I find Firefox startup much slower and more frustrating.)

I probably have something less than 10,000 messages total in Tbird in different accounts (inbox, sent, and various "archive" folders) and another 5,000 in a variety of local folders. I should add that I recently switched to IMAP for active accounts, so I can access mail from 2 different laptops. I don't really like Web access. I still have the POP accounts defined, just for storage. Now, IMAP is certainly slower (obviously).

Thanks for the response.

I am coming in a little late here, but I have to ask why you all don't just use Thunderbird's mailbox folders, or local folders? I move messages into folders by year. One advantage is that my desktop search tool (copernic) indexes and searches these, along with active email messages. I realize I am probably wasting space - but disk is cheap, and my time is what I want to save. One tool to search everything means a lot to me.

I do wish Thunderbird had a way of deleting attachments - just large ones that REALLY waste space. I used to use an extension for this, but I am not sure it still works.

Just my 2 cents ...

Skrommel's Software / Re: DragKing vs Remote Desktop
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:34 PM »
kronhead: If you'd like dragking to ignore SplashID, just follow the procedure i mentioned above (using the .zip file i attached to my post).

As for the other problems, if you'd like, i could help you have DragKing ignore xplorer2 too, but i can't really solve any problem with dragking or modify it's behaviour since it's Skrommel's code, not mine.

Actually, I modified dragking to work ONLY on some specific windows, based on searching the window title for specific strings (openoffice writer, my favorite text editor, firefox, thunderbird, etc). Not the best coding job, perhaps, but it works!

I remember YEARS ago seeing some Mac programmer cutting and pasting text repeatedly with just a few mouse swipes and clicks, and being very impressed. Now I can do the same thing!

I think I am having a similar problem with a program called SplashID from Splashdata. When I double click on a record to open it, Dragking is injecting a "C" which causes a change in my data. Can you make the same change for that - or point me the right point in the source code to add the addl window types? But I guess I need source code that is not yet released? Should I download the version you attached to your first reply, and follow those instructions?

The other weird thing that happens - but its not as serious - is: I use an alternative to windows explorer called xplorer2. When I double click on a directory to open it, it opens, but the name also gets copied to the clipboard. Same problem?

I should add that I *love* dragking - been looking for this capability for a while. But I wonder if maybe it ought to be more of an explicitly invoked function - like, only if you hold down shift or control or alt, or something like that. I am not sure that works with selecting text via the mouse - particularly with a laptop, which already needs 2 hands to move mouse and hold down the left button. My point was just that dragkind is almost TOO powerful - god-like, sort of! <g>

Anyway, let me know what I can do to help with my SplashID problem.
