General Software Discussion / anyone tried i.Scribe email client?
« on: November 04, 2006, 06:52 PM »
i.Scribe

The Small and Fast Email Client
Scribe is a small and fast email client with an intergrated contact database and calendar. It supports all the major internet mail protocols and uses international standards where possible. Scribe doesn't required installing or uninstalled and can be used from a removable drive without reconfiguration. It comes with a bayesian spam filter and translations to many different languages. Updates are published regularly to respond to problems and to add features. Because Scribe runs on Windows and Linux you can take your mail with you when you change operating system. And don't worry about viruses, Scribe protects you from the usual security holes in other email clients with it's own virus safe HTML control and executable attachment protection.

---------------

what i like about it is its portable (no installation) and it comes with a built in bayesian spam filter.

General Software Discussion / kmplayer, whoa!!!
« on: September 23, 2006, 06:19 AM »
i downloaded this high definition video:

BBC Motion Gallery: Japan

the 1080p version,

all these players lag like hell, the video playback looks like a slideshow:

bsplayer
wmp
gom
vlc
quicktime 7 player

these players lag slightly:
zoom player
media player classic

kmplayer is the only player that plays the file flawlessly, no lag nothing, amazing, eventho my system is somewhat below the requirements:

i have:
    * 2.8 Ghz Intel Pentium D
    * 1GB of RAM
    * 128MB video card

Recommended Hardware Configurations for H.264 High Definition (HD) Playback:

    * 3.0 Ghz Intel Pentium D (dual-core) or faster processor
    * At least 1GB of RAM
    * 64MB or greater video card

 :up: :up: :up: kmplayer :up: :up: :up:

Living Room / Do you like/eat Sweet Potato?
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:54 AM »
The Sweet Potato Is King
A nearly perfect food that's low in calories and sky-high in everything else

If you don't eat sweet potatoes very often, or only at holiday time when they're smothered in melted marshmallow goo and baked until they're unrecognizable, you're missing out on one of nature's truly perfect foods. They're low in calories, high in fiber, great for diabetics and people who are carbohydrate sensitive, and packed with vitamins and minerals. So good for you is the humble sweet potato that Nutrition Action Healthletter once rated it the number one healthiest vegetable. Because it's so delectable and versatile, the sweet potato is one of my favorite foods.

http://www.preventio...1-108-2754-1,00.html

i didnt eat much sweet potato but i am going to eat steamed sweet potatoes as breakfast from now on.

so this was my breakfast this morning, just plain japanese sweet potatoes. :)

« on: July 04, 2006, 01:58 AM »
OMG i didnt know these CEOs get such a good pay, more than USD400K!!!

Here are the most accurate figures for the above-listed executives I could find in reliable sources:

# Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross, was paid $468,599 in salary and benefits in fiscal 2003. (Source: BBB Wise Giving Alliance)

# Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way, was paid $432,709 in salary and benefits in fiscal 2003. (Source: Charity Navigator)

my computer has 1GB of RAM, pagefile is off.

the image i was trying to view/open:
type: .tif file
size: 75 MB
image properties: 61803x7200x32b

(if you like to try, this is the image in rar (yousendit link)

i tried a lot of image viewers, nothing worked even when i turned on the page file to 4GB, most of the viewers just freeze.

ACDSee (version 5 and above) opened the image beautifully even with pagefile off :Thmbsup:, mem usage increased from 30MB++ to 130MB++ and then dropped back to 45MB when the image is opened.

so amazing, big thumb ups to ACDSee.

edit: fix link.

Mini-Reviews by Members / DupeTrasher
« on: June 24, 2006, 05:37 AM »
DupeTrasher is 10 times faster than DoubleKiller (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1693.0) (havent tried the pro version).

Yet another duplicate file scanner?
We think it's not, but this is up to you to decide. From our experience, some very popular software packages have this option in their features set, but it's has rather poor design. They tend to completely hang or even crash the system when large number of files are included into search. Of course we are not going to name any of those applications here. Advanced algorithm combined with the raw power of assembly language gives you the fastest duplicate file finder on the market, as far as we know. This is not just a cliché sentence, until today we were unable to find some other utility of this kind that is faster, more optimized and lower memory consumer than DupeTrasher. This is especially true when it comes to a search of the large number of files. However, if you prove us wrong and find such application, please let us know, we will give you DupeTrasher license for free!

Technical details
DupeTrasher was written completely in Win32 assembly, as a standalone executable file with no third party libraries or DLL dependencies. Program size is only about 130kb and no compression has been used. It was designed to run on the Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003. Smart application crash system is implemented, in order to give you ability to report us any bug that may arise.

General Software Discussion / ShadowSurfer - free now
« on: June 21, 2006, 11:07 PM »
ShadowSurfer Benefits:

    * Prevent spyware and pop-ups
    *
      Avoid viruses and worms
    * Surf the internet without a trace of unwanted cookies, internet history and intrusive cyberjunk
    * Install and use trialware, shareware or games and discard with a simple reboot
    * Multiple Users - restore your PC after other users on your computer have made unwanted changes
    * Windows support for 2000 and XP

ShadowSurfer ShadowMode™ provides a safe computing environment by creating a virtual twin of your PC. Restore the pre-ShadowMode state of your computer no matter what changes have occurred.
==========================
it costs US29.95, but it's free now:

http://www.storagecraft.com/surfer.html

- reasonable memory usage, 2 processes use roughly 8MB of RAM, no slowdown whatsoever.

- requires lots of reboot, enable==>reboot, disable==>reboot.

- wont work for trialware that require reboot, becoz after a reboot it's all gone.

- i will keep it as reboot is much faster than making a new image with TI.

i just discovered that one of my music folder (3GB) has been deleted without my knowledge, i dont remember i delete that folder, it could have been deleted by me by accidental when i half awake or some other music player progs deleted it.

there are many shareware out there that can protect or hide a folder or files with password, but the users have to enter the password each time, this is too troublesome, it would be great if there is a simple prog that deny delete to a folder or files, this will prevent accidental deletion.

thank you.
