Find And Run Robot / FaRR not closing after launch
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:37 AM »
I had an SSD crash and had to reinstall all my stuff.  I had my FaRR settings backed up, so everything copied across, but now FaRR doesn't disappear when I launch something.  I could live with that, but it even leaves the typing in the window, so I have to delete that first before I can move on.

I've tried unchecking and then re-checking the "Close window by default" in the Window Options, but it didn't make any difference.  Any other ideas?

Find And Run Robot / Hang while "searching history"
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:05 PM »
I know this has been discussed, so I apologize for bringing it up again, but I can't find the solution here.  I've seen references to UNC paths, all kinds of other stuff, but nothing that seems relevant to my issue.  I just installed FARR on a new laptop, W7 Ultimate, SSD primary drive, and FARR keeps freezing for 5-10 seconds when I open it, always when "Searching history".  It only seems to do it when I haven't used FARR for a few minutes.  Right now, for example, as I'm trying to reproduce it, I can't, but it happens many times throughout the day, and I'm not restarting between occurrences.

Any ideas?

Find And Run Robot / More Searching Questions
« on: August 24, 2010, 01:05 PM »
(Sorry, I know it was a really bad pun...)

I'm still not understanding Searching and the Search Folders options.  I just created, for testing purposes, a directory structure like this on my D: drive:  First/Second/Third/Test.txt.

My D: drive has a folder on it called Backups, which contains a sync/backup structure for multiple folders on my C: drive (I use FileBack to maintain a few copies of certain things...).  So, I've created a Search Folder (in FaRR's Lists options) with these properties:  Name - D:\Backups (I used the folder selector to make sure there was no typo), Subdirectory Search Depth - 0, Score - -1000 (out of desperation).  Then, in FaRR, if I type "d:\first test", FaRR finds 28 items in 15 seconds, and the first 27 of them are in "D:\Backups\My Documents".  The last one is "D:\First\Second\Third\test.txt".  What am I doing wrong?

FWIW, if I type "D:\First" into FaRR, I get 2 items:  D:\First and D:\First\Second.  Same thing if I add a space after that string - the wheels don't come off until I type a non-space character after that...

Find And Run Robot / FARR won't start - help!
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:08 AM »
I just rebooted my laptop after a set of Windows updates from yesterday, and I got a message that "Find&Run Robot has stopped working", as it was booting up.  I reinstalled the latest version (same as the one I had), but no luck.

You KNOW my computer is completely useless without FARR, right?  HELP!

Thanks,

Mark

Find And Run Robot / Question about FARR's resource utilization
« on: November 21, 2009, 08:55 PM »
I just noticed something a little odd about FARR's resource utilization, or at least it seems odd to me.  (I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, btw...)  I installed the latest version of FARR earlier today and, since then, it's used a total of 2:42 minutes of CPU time, is using 17,516k of memory, 10,793,136 I/O Read Bytes, 35,833 I/O Write Bytes, and 1,086,660,762 I/O Other Bytes.  And, no, that 1 billion+ number isn't a typo...  Any idea why that number is so high?  FWIW, my system has been mostly inactive since I installed the latest version, meaning I've been gone most of the day and not using my computer...  The only other process that's used more I/O Bytes Other is MsMpEng (MS Security Essentials), at 1,156,970,506, and counting...

I don't know that this behavior is different from previous versions of FARR - I can't say that I've ever looked at I/O Bytes Other usage...

DcUpdater / Dcuppdater.exe crashes multiple times daily in W7...
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:18 PM »
I was looking at my Reliability Monitor today, just out of curiosity, and noticed that it says that DcUppdater.exe crashes multiple times every day.  This is typical of the problem report:

I'm running v1.23.01, according to the app itself.  Any ideas as to why this might be happening?  Most days, it happens twice at around 2:30 AM, and twice at around 2:30 PM.  It also leaves an icon in my system tray each time it happens, which disappears, of course, as soon as I mouse over it.

Find And Run Robot / Directory searching
« on: September 15, 2009, 10:01 PM »
Maybe I'm having a serious "senior moment", but I thought I had used this type of search before (and thought it was really cool!):

Given a directory D:\My\Important\Docs, type "My Docs\\" in FARR, and (after the search finishes, obviously) have the D:\My\Important\Docs directory show up in the results list.

But now it doesn't seem to work that way - I get no hits at all, and I've verified that the directory is being searched.  Should this type of search work or not?

Find And Run Robot / Launching Office docs not working...
« on: September 01, 2009, 10:58 AM »
Is there any known reason why launching a Office doc (Word or Excel, Office 2007, W7) wouldn't work?  If I type "Documents<tab>" to browse "My Documents", then "Planning<tab>" to browse the "Planning" directory, and  then "<doc name><Alt-#>" to launch the correct doc, the correct app runs if it's not already open, but if the app is already running (with another file open, obviously) nothing happens.  If I right click on the entry and select "Explore Here", I can of course open it fine from Explorer...

Is this just another one of those places where MS stabbed us all in the back by creating another way to do something that was already easy to do?

(I started formulating the idea behind this message when I noticed that the only key on my relatively new laptop that has the lettering worn off already is the left Alt key...)

I see that Left-Alt-# launches an entry from a result list, but Right-Alt-# doesn't.  Is that a design choice?

I was wondering, since searches aren't case-sensitive anyway, if it would be useful to allow Shift-letter to select from the list, e.g. A for the first choice instead of 1, B for the second, etc...  This would have the side-effect of giving you the ability to select from a longer list of results, too.  And I think it would make FARR even faster...

(If this seems completely nutty, please bear with me:  As I said in another post, I've been doing this stuff a long time and I don't move my hands from the home row unnecessarily anymore - I use Vim for my editor, ViEmu is my favorite add-on for Visual Studio and MS Word, and Vimperator is the only Firefox extension I simply would not do without...  I'm even playing with Kommand now (kylirhorton.com), an AHK script that's basically aiming to be a cross-application Vim-like key mapper, so you can expect nutty from me at times...)

Find And Run Robot / Default alias for nircmd
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:38 PM »
Is there a trick for getting the default alias for nircmd to work?  Sorry for the newbie questions, but I'm a newbie...

AWESOME utility, btw!!!  I've only been using it for an hour or two and other utilities are getting uninstalled one by one, as I discover how much better FARR can replace their functionality...

11
I was wondering if FARR can be used to duplicate the functionality of the iSwitchW AutoHotKey script - i.e. a text-based task switcher.  Ideally, I'd love to have FARR show open windows first in the list of hits, so I could run the program if it wasn't open.

For example, if I have Outlook open, and type "out" into FARR, it would show the open window as the #1 choice, followed by the shortcuts, etc. it's found.  Or if I had Outlook open, as well as an explorer window for a folder named "Lookout" (which is what Outlook should've been named, imo, with 3 exclamation marks after it...) FARR would show the open Outlook and Lookout windows first, followed by the shortcuts, etc.

This would let FARR function as a very fast task switcher AND launcher, simultaneously...

Thanks for listening, and apologies offered if it can already do this (I did look in the help files and at the features list, but didn't find anything)...

Screenshot Captor / Noob question
« on: February 16, 2008, 03:05 PM »
Just dl'ed Screenshot Captor for eval purposes...

Is there a way to associate text with a callout balloon without creating a separate text box object inside it?  I see the endpoint text property for arrows, but not a way to put text inside balloons...
