My wife and I are going to be using our own version of this chore card system in order to make sure we aren't overlooking what needs to be done when it needs to be done. Thanks a lot for the tip on the chore cards, I'll let everyone know how ours goes when we finish making and implementing it.

So far, it's going to be very different than what we've seen on the internet. The big difference is it's going to geared towards adults, so having individual assignments wont be necessary. The primary goal and focus will be simply to know when someone has and hasn't completed something so that we can keep on top of things without constantly consulting one another on what we've already done and discussing what needs to be done.

Living Room / Re: The end of the line for cursive writing
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:55 PM »
i hate cursive hand writing and would have been my best day in school had they said they were going to give up on it.

I find cursive writing much more difficult than regular printing, maybe the issue is unique to me, but i do see very little practical application to the skill.

svc.com is another, amazon is another, overstock and buy.com aren't too bad either really.

It would be difficult to get me to go anywhere but newegg though, as newegg has the absolute best customer service and the prices and selection are good too.

Living Room / College Recommendations?
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:54 PM »
I'm going to begin college now that I'm finally poised to do so. I'd like to attend a program to get my master in Software Engineering. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of a typical student who gets to go through life on a gravy train so I'll have to work full time while getting this degree, so I guess I'm limited to online college or a place which offers flexible scheduling.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

You forget a vital ingredient, old people or people who just dont want to have to deal with crap dont have networks :D

If your old people do, you haven't trained them right.

The only thing I have to say to both parties is using the internet requires tough skin. I hope I haven't done anything to offend anything and would certainly want to make amends if so, but it is unrealistic to believe all of us will agree on every subject. The important thing isn't that conflict doesn't occur, it's how you handle it when it does occur.

Having said that, I have some humor for you

If you are old, don't care to learn just want to use something and it work, apple is for you.

God, Grant me the serinity...

You must only meet one of the criteria, not all. Not saying apple is only for old people, but am saying old people should only use apple

EDIT: ESPECIALLY if you're an old person calling me for help fixing your internet

Wow, I think I just got crit-text'd for over 9,000 hit points.

I'll share my simple position on apple.

If you are old, don't care to learn just want to use something and it work, apple is for you.

If you are interested in learning, tweaking, using your PC for something not every person does, or navigating your computer with only the keyboard, etc apple is not for you.

Am I being too simple here since my opinion doesn't take 2 pages to write? *shrugs*

Living Room / Re: Easiest laptop (brand) to take apart ?
« on: April 30, 2011, 09:11 PM »
IMHO, dell laptops are the easiest to work on. I know you're going for easiest to access CPU, but did want to mention they are very easy to take apart and put back together and leave you feeling like you've done reasonably little damage to them. Some laptops just taking off the keyboard makes you feel like you've severely violated them and you don't want to do it too often in fear you may end up breaking something.

At any rate, that's my 2 cents. I like dell's laptop construction (not only easy to take apart/repair, but very solid and difficult to damage while the lid is shut). I typically am not particularly fond of one brand or the other, but in this field I've grown to appreciate dell's craftsmanship.

On a final note, the most difficult laptop I've ever taken apart was called a medion. Dont think they're in business anymore (thankfully), the laptop was machine pressed together by pressure tabs etc. I ended up being completely unable to reattach the keyboard and the laptop sits today in my closet, waiting for someone to love it once more

We shop at Sam's Club, but only because it's much closer than Costco where we're at. We get Charmin ultra strong. It's very soft and much less is needed (as little as 5 squares) because it is very strong as advertised. One pack lasts my wife and I about 4+ months for $18, It's well worth what we pay. For some reason the website says $21 but we paid $18 the last time and the time before that $16 and some change (probably closer to $17)

Also for some reason I'm allergic to Angel Soft toilet paper. Toilet paper is about the worst thing to discover you're allergic to.

While I certainly prefer over, I did want to point out a time when I prefer under that hasn't been listed.

When in a commercial restroom with the half-ply toilet paper which has jagged edges around each side to 'easily rip' the toilet paper (even though you have to treat it like a paper thin sheet of gold ready protect a satellite preparing to orbit to keep it from ripping while unrolling), under is far superior so that your job of getting more than half of a sheet of toilet paper is sufficient.

Also, I have on a couple of occasions found my toilet paper unraveled for unknown reasons. I still haven't quite figured it out, but the problem seems to be tied to the density of said toilet paper (ie fluffy soft toilet paper not at as high of risk).

Ultimately, it doesn't bother me so much that I'll change the paper orientation or even pay attention to the orientation when installing new toilet paper, but do prefer over.

On a final note, if you own a business and get toilet paper that is so cheap it rips by the pressure required to remove the said toilet paper, just remember this. Those are the places that I make sure i have enough toilet paper to make a paper mache basket ball before i commence wiping. There are 2 reasons, first reason is a protest for the retarded notion this will save any money, and the second is because the paper is so thin i can't trust it so must use only large quantities.

The ipad, for once, actually offers something not pre-existing. the small form factor of this tablet and fact that it's completely keyboardless was unique to the market. now there have been many ebook readers which try to emulate it but nothing of value so far. i'm still not buying with a $500 price tag though, give me a netbook for less than half that price any day.

Haha, It's funny but not surprising unfortunately. Also very confusing to me personally because it doesn't make sense why they would pirate something that is already free o_O.

Grats on the new server! :D

I think this is a wonderful idea for an app there mouser, excellent work!

I unfortunately do not currently have a webcam hooked up, but I definitely own one. If I can find it, this might actually give me a reason to use it! Reminds me of Avatar haha. It's an excellent idea though, I hate journaling. This would actually get me to do it.

Just letting you know I haven't abandon you lol. Sorry I haven't been around. Life has been hectic (isn't that always the excuse?) and every time I manage to get my computer going good something seems to happen.

Right now my motherboard was hit with a power surge and I'm gonna have to get an RMA for it... when I stop being lazy I'll do it :S

Living Room / Re: How can we fix government? (U.S.)
« on: June 28, 2010, 09:32 PM »
One of the first things we need to do is fix the voters, which will be nearly impossible to do until the government pisses them off to care. I don't see this happening any time soon, unfortunately. :(

Edit: Oh, and I forgot, not only must the government piss them off, but they must also actually understand politics, which like less than 10% of americans do, and way less than that understand politics well enough to make informed decisions when voting

I stick to my original thought, you should be required to pass a basic knowledge skills test in order to cast any vote.

there are even physical monitoring devices that can capture your username and password... and who's to say that if the computer is fine that the network itself isn't vulnerable?

point blank, it's risky to use nearly any public connection or computer, no matter how safe you are. it's like having sex with a hooker, they could be clean, or they could be dirty and you might be ok with a condom, or you might use a condom and manage to get an STD anyway. no matter how you slice it, it's risky business.

Best Archive Tool / Re: Versions??
« on: June 19, 2010, 08:15 PM »
7-zip dominates in sheer features, price, and formats it carries. others are good for other things though. one which has died some but was good was winace... it used to do some voodoo compressing that was the best, but 7zip has definitely dominated if using the correct settings as far as compressibility is concerned.

Post New Requests Here / Re: keyboard toggle app
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:14 PM »
Thanks so much for your prompt and thorough responses.

As for locking it, I actually had not thought of that. Thanks for pointing it out, but monitoring my server apps is actually important and locking the station would impede that.

Thanks for the link to toddler trap, sounds exactly like what I need! Come to think of it, I believe I even saw the original request for this and had forgotten entirely about it.

As for kid-key-lock and pro-key-lock, thanks for your links, I will try if toddlertrap doesn't suit my needs.

Post New Requests Here / keyboard toggle app
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:59 AM »
I have a computer that I use as a server. I don't use it most of the time, and the keyboard is sometimes bumped, causing buttons to be clicked etc that can be hazardous to a server PC (for example, if i somehow closed an application by hitting the keyboard).

Is there a way to have a very simple app that basically has a key combination to toggle the keyboard on and off, so that these inadvertant keypresses don't occur? Sorry if such a thing exists, my (admittedly limited) searches came up with just programming examples of how to do it and was not sure how to implement it myself.
