It's still hanging on exit. :( Is there more information I can get you to replicate it?

Cool new settings dialog. :)

Looks like I ran into a new problem. :( When using Win2VNC (from SourceForge) my paste won't work in the client computer. I think having the option to paste using Ctrl-G will solve that as Ctrl-V could be set unchecked and left as normal.

- Another Suggestion
I thought I added this already but I guess not. It would be really handy to set another shortcut key combo to paste the Date and Time. Very similar to TicTocTitle but without going to the SysTray to get to it.

I've had a chance to run the new version. It still has the issue of launching the application more than once. I may even think it's something else because I think it's launching more than 15 minutes worth. (4 times per hour). After a night I had about 150 instances of SndVol32 waiting for me. That's 37.5 hours worth.

- Another Suggestion
How about a dialog asking if you want to mute or unmute? If it is about to mute have the dialog default to muting after 5 or ten seconds (user configurable?). And when it is going to unmute just leave the dialog up.

Thoughts?

Also, I just ran it again to be sure of what I was looking at and it hung after canceling the settings dialog. Not a big deal once it is setup but letting you know to be thorough. My full time job is QA lead after all. ;)

Sorry for the non-code writing. It's in 'Rene brainstorm code'.

IdleMute is running and waiting for the idle time limit...

Idle time limit hit
   Is there a program that should prevent idle muting
      Yes - Don't Mute
   Is there a program to run when muting
      Yes - Run program
   Exit

I thought that may be the case, but if you check the dates below it seems to be in YYYY-MM-DD.

7
Done, thanks. :)

BTW Skrommel, you have listed the two latest updates as happening on 2006-04-02. Are you programming a time machine too? :)

OK, I think I know what the problem is. It is not avoiding running the application assigned to mute when there is an exception, but it is avoiding muting when there is an exception.

Do I make a general donation to this URL or can I donate to you specifically? I am a big fan of paying those for software I use.

- Suggestion
It would be helpful for me to choose which of the 4 corners of the window to display in. When I view Windows Picture and Fax viewer to show pictures it covers most of the buttons in the top right. If I was to set it over more (which I've already done for Trillian) It will be covering the text of dialogs, or off the left side of them. Of course the previous suggestion of excluding (or limiting) the windows it displays on, but this is another solution and something some people may appreciate.

- Problem
It seems to be very unstable for me. Pretty much every reboot I have to 'end task' it. It also doesn't always exit when I select the option from the menu.

- Additional suggestion
It would be really helpful if IdleMute asked you if you wanted to unmute when it detected movement. This would actually negate most of my need to run SndVol32. And it would remind me to check if my volume was set inappropriately.

I left it running again and had the same problem. I was woken up by my computer telling me about the error. I was running Winamp (with ambient tunes) while I was sleeping so it should not have went into the mute phase because Winamp is an exception program. Is it possible it has something to do with my computer going to the password screen after 30 minutes? I keep my computer secure by timing out at 30 minutes and I have the option ' On resume: display Welcome screen' checked.

Here are my settings...

[Settings]
idletime=30
latetime=0
mutewhenidle=1
mutingstart=0000
mutingend=0000
programs=winamp.exe,
mutecommand=C:\WINXPTPC\system32\sndvol32.exe
mutecommanddir=C:\WINXPTPC\system32
mutecommandhide=0
unmutecommand=
unmutecommanddir=
unmutecommandhide=0
latecommand=
latecommanddir=
latecommandhide=0
startmuted=2
lastmute=0
fademuting=1
hotkeymute=
hotkeyvolumeup=
hotkeyvolumedown=
volumechange=10
showvolumebar=0
playsound=C:\WINXPTPC\Media\ding.wav

Thanks, I'll check it out. :)

I have a tablet PC and I use it practically everywhere I go. I need to adjust the main volume based on the environment I am in. At work it is generally 50% and plugged through the line-in to my desktop. At home when I am awake I use it on the coffee table (or holding it) and sometimes adjust the volume up or down depending on the situation (watching TV, showing video, etcetera). Also, I listen to an ambient playlist when myself and the GF are sleeping so I need to fine tune it really low. Having the volume control come up when my computer is idle and muted (except when running apps in the 'do not mute' list) it is a bonus to have the ability to see what my volume is at since I change it so often. Saves me opening it up. :) One thing most might not have is custom sounds tied to Windows events. It's because of this that I have very specific settings in SndVol32.

Perhaps you are right in that there needs to be a volume preset application made, all the better if this could be combined into a single 'audio control' application. It would be useful in half the situations. However, I would still want to know the current volume setting when I come back to my computer.

As I mentioned previously, my screen real estate is at a premium because I am forced to 1024x768. As such I hide all icons that are not crucial. I run SndVol32.exe so when I come back to my system there is a window on top that clearly identifies that the system is muted. If I am running Winamp it won't mute as I added that application to the watch list for IdleMute but when it's not running I wouldn't realize the sound is off right away as the IdleMute and other icons are hidden. I have created an extensive lists of verbal sounds tied to various applications so I know if something requires my attention (Incoming email with unique sounds for various types of email, IM sounds, etcetera) and I frequently forget my system is muted from some meeting so I don't get the verbal messages and miss things. :(

Running SndVol32.exe also serves double duty in that if I need to adjust the volume it is a clear indication of the current volume. This in conjunction with not auto un-muting the computer let's me have total control of the volume. Especially in those embarrassing situations where my computer decides to tell everyone I just got a work email.

WRT IdleMute, I will test again this week to get concrete details on the issue. I was using the 'Muting' command timer not the 'Idle and Muted' timer. But I will need to test to be sure. I turned it off when that happened.

Also, sometimes one or more if the applications stops responding to right clicks and needs to be closed through Task Manager. A minor annoyance and hard to track down.

To give you some background on myself, I've been in IT for about 6 years and I am also the QA lead for a game developer. So if there are things you would like help testing I think I can provide that for you. :)

Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick response! You've done some really good work and I really look forward to the updates.

On a related note, do you work in C at all? there is another project where I have been in communication with the developer and he likes the ideas I have given him but he has no time to work on it. He did end up putting it on SourceForge but has not done much work with it. I would most definitely be willing to donate money to you in exchange for working on this project and some of my ideas.

the program is a web application for queueing songs into Winamp. I use it to run a couple SHOUTcast stations. Search for ElectroCity on SHOUTcast to get a list of my stations and here is the queueing link for each....

Skrommel's Software / Combining Similar Applications - Suggestions
« on: March 05, 2006, 02:40 PM »
- Suggestions
Have you considered this? It would be really handy to have some of the similar applications combined into one so there are less applications running and thus less memory usage. In addition it would prevent applications from competing with each other in cases like CAPshift and PlainPaste, both of which I use. It would also present a unified location for settings that are similar.

I generally use my keyboard and mouse at the highest speed settings, in fact some people think my computer is broken when the double-click because I have it set so fast. In this vein I find the delay on a paste operation to be on the long side. I would like to suggest you use Ctrl+G as that is close to Ctrl+V and is not used by windows for anything at the moment or even allowing the user to set the key combination.

For reference, here are the current Windows shortcuts from Microsoft...

It would be really great to have global shortcut keys to cut, edit, and paste in the various forms (UPPER CASE, lower case, etcetera). Basically I select some text and press Ctrl+Shift+L for lower case for example and it does all the work.

- Problems
There was an issue for me in that every time an application/window was opened it caused all my windows to flash. If this is unavoidable I can understand and sadly won't be able to use the application. If there is some way I can help you track down an issue I would be glad to.

Skrommel's Software / IdleMute - Suggestions and Problems
« on: March 05, 2006, 02:12 PM »
- Suggestions
I would appreciate an option to not auto-unmute. On mute I have the application open the volume control so I know that the system is muted and I can make a choice of whether it is appropriate to unmute when I come back to my computer and see it.

Another useful option would be to mute on sleep or when resuming from sleep. I often resume from sleep in a different environment such as a meeting and when I do the system makes noises associated with sleep and logging back on to my system which can be embarrasing. :P

- Problems
When I set the application to run SndVol32.exe on mute and went away from my tablet to meet with someone I came back and it had launched about 20 instances of the volume control and started generating errors because it couldn't launch SndVol32.exe anymore. I believe I had the time set to a short interval as I was testing the application before i went into the impromptu meeting. If you need any details fro my computer let me know. If this is intended, an option to not run the specified application if the system is already muted would be appreciated.

Skrommel's Software / StartClock - Suggestions
« on: March 05, 2006, 02:02 PM »
- Suggestions
Something very useful would be to show the date as well as the time in the start button even if it is very small.

It would be nice to be able to configure what to display on the tool tip and maybe change the font colour and type face used for the Start button.

Is it possible to show a tooltip when hovering over the time? This would be very useful as I have a tablet PC and the Taskbar real estate is very vaulable and as such I have most of my SysTray icons hidden including StartClock.

- Suggestions
I've noticed that some windows (dialogs) are too small to properly display and read the time. I think a setting to only show or not show on a defined list of windows would help. Maybe an option to not display on windows of a certain width?

The clock stays on the DT when last window is minimized. Similarly the clock still shows after closing the Start Menu. There is another post about this issue but if you don't mind I'll leave it in my list too. Maybe there is some way to detect that there is no valid window and therefore force the clock to go into specified corner on the desktop? Maybe at an increased size considering it is the desktop? Or just clear it until a window is brought up.

When changing the settings it does not update. Perhaps adding a menu option to refresh the settings will help?

- Problems
There seems to be an issue when using ClearType. The text is grown somewhat and unreadable.

Very well done! I have chosen a number of your applications to try and as such I have some feedback for you. I will make a post for each application.

Thanks again! :D
