already some people would argue that requiring people to renew their freeware license key every 6 months is pushing the definition of freeware.

I would call any program which you don't have pay for freewae, no matter how many annying nags and ads you got. (that's why I call winr RAR freeware aulthough It's actually shareware)

The find and run robot video was funny. "I'll have a quick game of minesweeper" and the first thing that you clicked on was a mine.  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks. I tried checking if one existed but I couldn't think of what to search for.

So it would run off of the CD rather than installing it onto the hard drive?

So could I install it so that when I start up my computer, windows boots but I could easily switch it to linux. And would it run on an NTFS hard drive?

you know that is a VERY good point!

bots do scan websites and harvest emails for spam...
hmm, ok let's see how can we fix this..
maybe an encrypted paypal link is needed after all somehow...
This is a tiny bit unrelated but what can you do (other than delete this post, block me from the forum and/or plant viruses onto my computer). Here's a thing which is supposed to help destroy spambots: http://www.killersites.com/antiSpam.php (I don't understand how it works)

General Software Discussion / Linux - Freeware or Shareware?
« on: January 01, 2006, 12:48 PM »
I've had linux reccomended to me several times by friends because I absolutely hate microsoft and anything vaguely microsoft related (eg. windows). They say it's freeware. I tried looking on www.linux.com but it was all too confusing for me and I couldn't find my way around. So is linux freeware or shareware? If it's freeware, is it compatable with anything?

I'm not sure that the DVDs would work bacause there are two different formats of DVD - PAL and NTSC. In Hong Kong, they use the NTSC format - in the US, I think you use the PAL format. I'm not entireley sure because I live in the UK and I don't know much about American DVDs - I could be wrong.

Skrommel's Software / Re: Compression: BigByte
« on: January 01, 2006, 05:46 AM »
Good point. I just compressed it and thought that it didn't seem right. But thinking about it, I suppose wouldn't need to compress it...

My idea for pricing - pay per megabyte - perhaps 20 cents per megabyte per month. Or even better (to make it easier to collect the money), $2.40/yr. I would find pay per megabyte useful because I would probably only use it to host a couple of MB.

Finished Programs / Screensaver On/Off/Auto
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:43 PM »
Ok, the idea is it's an icon which sits in your <thing on the bottom right hand corner of your screen>. Click on it and a meu opens with the options On/Off/Auto. If you click On, your screensaver immediately starts; if you click off, your screensaver will never come on. If you select auto, the program does nothing and just lets the screensaver come on when you had set it to.

Skrommel's Software / Compression: BigByte
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:29 PM »
I made a 1GB file with BigByte and compressed it. The file size when compressed was about 70KB. I'm guessing that that's because BigByte creates files which are just 11111111111111111111111111111111 etc and when compressed it is stored as 8589934592 1's rather than 11111111111111111111111111etc. Maybe you could make it make files which are 10101010101010etc or maybe even randomly generated to stop such decrese in file size when compressed.

just about done... only need to add scripting support.
So you did decide to add scripting. Aha. So if i typed in Buttonscript:  "javascript:shutdown();" The computer would shut down when the button was pressed? If so could you tell me a couple more scripts please?

To add send to locations, go to start run and type in "C:/Documents and Settings/[Your username]/SendTo" And add a shortcut to the Send To location you want to add.

Maybe in the next version of Dr windows you could add a feature which allows you to insert text boxes. Like this one: <input type="text" size="20">

I don't see what you have against putting your whole hard drive in a zip archive split into volumes of just under 5GB then burning them onto some DVD-RWs

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Freeware antivirus. Sounds suspicious. I never use freeware antivirus. Any other freeware is ok, but not freeware antivirus.

But it looks cool anyway.
Has anyone tried virus checking it with Norton antivirus or simmilar?

Thanks for telling me about the Acronis thing. I'm trying out the free trial now.

This is completely unrelated and I should probably have started a new topic for it but I'll write it here anyway.  One mitute's silence will be held at 4:00Pm UK time (I think that's 10:00AM USA time) today to remeber the faithful paperclip which i dropped into my CRT monitor.
